  • Decent receiver for the price if you can cope with a few flaws, easy overload and AM radio breakthrough

    Hello dear Danny,
I am fan of you from India, and I like your videos and knowledge about Radios. I am a Radio youtuber myself and I understand we are a rare species in current times 😅
    I appreciate your efforts.
I purchased Xhdata D-808 after seeing your (and Todderbert) review and it went on to become a very favourite Radio of mine.
    Warm regards.

I appreciate your insightful review. Having recently acquired the Sihuadon D-808, this video reinforces the sound reasoning behind my decision. Living in Australia, where our closest equivalent to a weather band is the local airport ATIS, I've found that the D-808 performs admirably in meeting my needs.

Hej Gill thanks for the review of the XHDATA D-109 WB version so yes gonna order this radio although I can't use the weather band in Sweden but it will be interesting to test it on shortwave here where I live and compare it with my original XHDATA D-109. But yes agree with you Gill the audio on this radio is so nice take care Gill.

I use a stand alone vbfo. From tentec to other vendor. **** I found that my cell makes a crude beat signal though....and also if you have a receiver with a noisy if. The name of the game restore that missing sideband. PS a turn or two around the rig does it😊

What I love is, if I'm using bluetooth, I can 'jump forward' my podcast by 15 seconds, or jump back. Plus I can answer calls using the radio speaker (while I'm lying in the bath!). None of which my much more expensive JBL Flip 6 can do!

I think next month, I might order me the WB version of this radio, because it has the long wave band, AM-FM and short wave radio and Bluetooth receiver. I know it would be a good radio to use and listen to during power outages. They need to add the Weather Band on many portable short wave radios. They need a High Pass Filter into the Shortwave Bands to block off the close by AM radio station interference, and also Low Pass Filter to block off local FM stations on the short wave bands. Also I hope they had a Low Pass Filter for the LW band to block local AM stations.

You were mentioning that you have recently having difficulty in picking up the NOAA weather station off of Mount Mansfield , Vermont. with this new receiver. Their transmission tower has been undergoing maintenance for quite some time resulting in a very feeble signal thanks to reduced transmitting power . I used to get a much stronger signal during which time I been living In Laval right across from Montreal.

Yes I know they had some work on antenna, but when I check with another receiver, it comes in much better than on this 109WB

Thanks Gilles for the excellent review! I'd like to buy this one for the Weather Band feature but was wondering if you think the SW reception is better or comparable to the Tecsun PL380/PL660 which I already have.

Thanks for the review ! Any indication that they may release a refreshed D-808 possibly with WB ?

Thanks for sharing, Gilles. I wont be upgrading as we do not use WB here in Europe but sure it'll sell well in North America. Jay Allen gave it a 5 stars for FM.

They also used as taxi radios in Europe, but in Rome, Italy, they used Mototurbo two way radios.

Check the sound at lower volumes. Is it ok? The "older" one has a bug (or defect) in this area.

Is the issue that the lowest tenth of the volume dial cuts out?

Nice review. Have you found anything about the original that's better than the new one? So far it sounds like the new one is every bit as good as the original, but now it has new features and a few improvements.

I wonder if they kept the same chip and just used software to add the NOAA bands to it. If so, I wonder why more makers simply doesn't do that. Maybe that accounts for the receiver not going good on NOAA.

I'm in USA and researching multi-function radios for my great-grand nephew's upcoming 11th birthday. I was referred to D-109/D-109WB as potential choices. His family is very outdoorsy, so NOAA would come in handy. Can you suggest any others under $50 USD? Should I also consider the traditional-looking table/carry radios like Jazmm (blue mini-boombox style)?
I'm a linguistic/regional accents buff, and am curious about your pronunciation of "th" as "d" instead. Is that Canadian, or general East Coast, or?

I think it has a USB Type C charging port, not Micro USB as you stated at 7:36. Ordered one last night and should be getting delivery today. Thanks for the Canadian perspective review.

BTW, I’m ok with HanRongDa HRD-787 / Retekess TR111. 7 NOAA channels with alert, VHF frequencies including 4 Canadian Weather Marine channels (161.650, 161.775, 161.750 and 162.000 MHz), + 163.275 MHz
