Hey, make a video onhow to be PA, how ST can become? Can you elaborate the opportunities for surgical techs like what study opportunities they have? Like ST, CST, First Assist, PA etc? Eagerly waiting!
Welcome to the field. So SPD is the acronym for Sterile Processing Department which is the area of the hospital we work in. CRCST stands for Certified Registered Central Service Technician which is the basic certification for Sterile Processing Technicians. The CRCST is taken through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA). Lots of acronyms in healthcare but hopefully that helps.
I passed the test in 2019 by studying free materials I found online. Practice test, flash cards etc. The test was hard but I passed. When I applied for my first job the hospital was very surprised I had my cert. I worked until I got my 400 hours in then I was "let go" right before the pandemic for vaping in the parking lot on my break. Never cared to find another spd job after that and even if I did I would have to get recertified all over again I think. I loved the job but the pay was horrific. My hospital hired uncertified travelers that were getting paid 3x more than me and I had to train them.
Sounds like you had some difficult times. Where you live? That usually plays a big role in pay. And I agree, when a hospital is paying travelers so much more than their own technicians, it’s a big reason why there’s such high turnover rates. If they just paid their own technicians better, they wouldn’t have to pay out the ass for travel techs who can often cause more headaches with training than their actual use.

You can become a surgical tech completely online and make quite a bit more than 35-40 a year. Follow this link: surgicaltechonline.com/ Surgical Tech and Sterile Processing Tech are different jobs. Surgical Techs handle the instrumentation in surgery helping assist with surgical procedures. Sterile Processing Techs handle the instruments after surgery with cleaning, disinfection and sterilization. Two very different jobs that touch the same instruments. As for blood and hazards, that is just part of healthcare and why it is very important you follow the rules and where the appropriate protective equipment you are issued. Most cuts or mistakes happen because people choose not to follow rules and then end up getting themselves hurt for no reason.
