I notice this too. Like there was some grumbling among certain people about black women using the term "natural hair" to refer to our kinky textures. To say, "my (straight/wavy) hair is natural too!"
It's so disingenuous and self absorbed 🙄🙄

I use "curly" as a general term, as in, if it's not straight it's curly, but I do agree that coils are a specific type of curl (the same way that a square is a type of rectangle) and can require a particular regimen. The cool thing about coils is they can be big or tiny. 😃 (I don't go by the hair chart system personally, especially since I have parts that coil from root to tip, and some where they start as an S curl then turn into a coil halfway down.)
    I love my coils😊
Your styles and colour showcased in this vid are lovely❤

thank you for sharing this! Y’all schooling me today as you’re the third comment that just uses the word curls in the general sense for hair that isn’t straight and is perfectly happy with their hair vs wanting curls or not knowing the difference so this is refreshing to know y’all are here embracing and enjoying and keeping the terminology simple while enjoying your hair be it coils, kinks, curls, waves or combination. Thank you for the style and color compliment - I absolutely love highly textured hair and believe we should be enjoying it to the fullest while keeping it in best condition so vibrant color and all types of styles were a constant among myself & clientele. The hair IS the calling card okay! 👌🏾 Appreciate you watching & taking a moment to comment 🌼

Maybe it’s different for other people but for me this isn’t that deep. I say curly, coily, and kinky describe my hair and think nothing of it. Actually more people refer to my hair as curly than coily.. For me, a coil just means a tight curl. Also while I have mostly 4a hair some of my hair is looser. The majority of people don’t have just one curl type. 4a 3c combo is common. So based on your description a person can be both curly and coily.

My take on calling coils curls are that coils are a type of curl. The tightest curls on the curly hair spectrum. I also consider waves to be loose curls because they are the loosest curls on the curly hair spectrum. I know they all require different forms of care and techniques but there still curls to me just different types

It's the same for me. Especially due to the fact that I have a couple of different textures in different places. Majority of my hair would be classified as 3B but I for sure have a couple spots that are 4A/4B so...I just say it's curly because it's not straight, lol.

I have noticed it too. I was like what happened to coily hair. I think this is part of a bigger issue of our culture being taken and merged to suite a different audience. I see it all the time now with “wash days,” “protective” styling to wearing a bonnet. I’m like since when lol I grew up in a yt town only 8% black. When I tell you I used to be made fun of for putting grease and oils in my hair and not washing my hair everyday-it honestly pisses me off. We need to go back to gate keeping some things. There’s a yt woman here on RUclips I swear she watched all the old videos on natural hair from 10 yrs ago and literally copying word for word. I definitely called her out this is some straight bs. On TikTok you have black creators hyping up yt girls who are wearing crochet braids and cornrows. It’s ridiculous we don’t have to be so damn accepting all the damn time. Especially since we ain’t been paid our reparations. It’s time we go back to protecting and gatekeeping our culture and stop inviting everybody to the damn cookout 😂.

Here's how I know we're kindred spirits "gatekeeping" "cookout" "pisses me off" "reparations" "black creators hyping up yt girls who are wearing crochet braids and cornrows" I FEEL ALL OF THIS LOL you know the yts STAY watching us and appropriating our cultural practices, monetizing them and calling it their own. Been doing it since their ancestors made first contact with ours. SMH My cookouts and precious cultural info is closed to the others. Some things are just for us as they should be! I remember my niece and I having a heated conversation about gatekeeping natural hair care techniques in the professional salon space from the others and she just could not understand WHY that is my position. She works at a lovely non black owned salon. Where as I opted to open my own studio and service my people and rent my extra chairs to my people keeping our coins in circulation amongst us! I think she'll get it one day. #nomoredamninvitestothecookout

I appreciate your comments and find them educational. I’m a baby boomer (70) and had the experience of all hair methods from relaxers, Jeri curls, silk press and color. I truly believe our generation can tell the story because the information was quite limited when we were young and now is a wealth of knowledge available. I was so excited to go natural during the pandemic but it is a struggle because there is so much out there. Regarding coils to curls I think people use the language as a general terminology. I’m have coils and a mixed texture. The key I found from doing research and a stylist is to getting the hair moisturized and hydrated. This requires a lot of patience. Often It’s not the product but having good scalp, moisture and hydration NO product will work if this doesn’t happen. BUT this requires lots, lots of patience and understanding your hair type and what it needs. It took me over 6 months for my hair to accept to become moisturized and hydrated. After that occurred the battle for styling my natural hair became very easy. I found I don’t have to use that many styling products until this happened…
Good Luck to all my natural hair beauties but remember patience is the key and everyone’s timeline is different 👍🏾🙏🏾

I’m soo happy to hear you’ve found the key to making natural hair care manageable and easy and that is hydrating that hair and maintaining that hydration level. Dry hair is breaking, difficult, non behaving normally hair no matter the type. You are correct there are no miracle products that will miraculously transform dehydrated hair. My primary purpose here is to make sure naturals practice a hydrating hair regiment and use products that nourish the hair & scalp instead of dry them out & cause health problems. Thank you for taking the time to comment and do continue to enjoy your hair!

I truly believe that God (whichever one folks worship) is most pleased when we embrace and take the highest care of ourselves as we are created. Can you imagine creating someone and watching them self harm trying to change what you created because they feel this change they are making is better? Relaxers, Perms, abuse of wigs, weaves, braided/twisted extensions, some brands of color, cosmetic surgery etc...can all lead to self harm. We must get clear on this. I receive and return those blessings to you.

greetings & thank you for adding your perspective to the thread. hopefully as more coily specific content is created the distinction and best care practices will be more widely known to us naturals. It's important. On the mid shaft splits with wash & go's its either the products or the random weak strand here and there that can occur due to the inability to get nourishing product to every single strand on the head. Wash and gos are one of the most hydrating and least manipulative style options so long as the products aren't drying the hair out and improper blow drying isn't in the mix.

I am a proud 4b coily girl! I haven't always been proud of my coils and I wanted "good hair" in way of silky curls for many years after going natural. It's taken me some time to accept and be thankful for my coily hair. I think the absence of coily hair is exactly what you said about not wanting nappy hair when you first went natural. I think that coily hair is seen as nappy and bad hair. It has such a negative stigma associated with it going back to slavery when our beautiful ancestors couldn't take care of their hair in the ways that they knew. These negative subconscious beliefs were passed down to us from family and society which created what we see as the hair that's least liked. But I think the more love and exposure we give to our coils will result in more acceptance and thankfulness of other coily naturals. So I thank you for sharing your love and beautiful coily mane with us!❤🙏🏾

I finally let go chasing that curly look and embrace my coils and zig zags. I just use a leave in and mousse foam and let my hair do its thing. Love your video!

greetings & welcome coily zig zag lady! I'm soo happy to know you've decided to focus on maximizing what you have instead chasing another look. The best we can do is balance our hairs moisture levels with regular deep conditioning and non drying styling practices to reveal our hairs optimal state and once we're there das sit! That's what you get now work it! Short story time: I had one client that complained every appointment about how dry & curl less her hair was. I told her she has to deep condition between visits due to her hair characteristics- coarse low porosity- for that to change. After about two years she finally did what I said and what do you know she was surprised at the softness and curls appearing in her hair. Being a stylist ain't easy with some client types! Thanks for the love on the video. I do my best to offer informative vs performative content.

I think many people are unaware that their hair is coily or what a coil even is. Curly ringlets is not a coil. But I see comments here saying that it is. I also see people saying that tightly curly hair is an s wave rather than a coil so these must be the folks that are scared to pick up their shed hair off the floor lol (like I've literally seen so many people online who hate their hair saying they hate and are scared of their type 4 shed hair). the pattern looks like an s curl cause it's clumped. take a singular strand of hair out add water and let it dry naturally and it will coil.
Also a lot of the people that call their coily hair curly, turn around and say that wavy hair isn't curly so it's giving hypocritical (cause if a coil is just a tight curl then a wave is just a loose curl).

    • @basiqueopulence888

You’re absolutely right on many just not knowing the difference and using the curl word with a broad stroke. now that being afraid of your own shed hair?!?! That’s wild 😂
How on earth is a coil a tight curl but a wave not a loose curl? Well by that logic curls are large coils and I’m sticking to that! Can you imagine a plethora of large coil videos hitting these RUclips streets? I wonder how the curlies will feel having their identity changed because it sounds better to us! LOL

Many people like the proximity in words it gives them to say curly, others are misinformed due to lack of media or community education I believe. Being biracial presenting (ambiguous) these days is ‘in’ so people will damage their hair to get it to look a certain way.

This was such an engaging talk, that I decided to log in and give a thumbs up and subscribe. Something that I have noticed, which may be adding to the confusion is the way that hair products are marketed these days. This is just my opinion but it seems like a lot of hair products that had been marketed toward women who clearly have Type 4 hair are now marketed to a broader consumer base. I don’t know if this is part of it but, in recent years, we are seeing hair care companies with Black women founders being acquired by large corporations (L’Oreal, Procter & Gamble) who then turn around and change the marketing strategy to a very broad range of hair textures. It also seems like many of the hair bloggers/vloggers who openly embraced the term coils have left the blogosphere/vlogging space. There was one woman, I used to watch and read (I have wracked my brain trying to remember her name!) and she was the first person who I read/watched to refer to her her as coily and then I began to use the term to describe my hair and I think she caught my attention because she said her her was coily and fine, her hair seemed to have higher density than mine though, but I guess you can still have fine hair with a higher density?
The other thing is that some people, I have noticed some people refer to having “tight curls” which I take to mean coily but I do think it sometimes depends on what part of the world you’re in as some people live outside of the U.S. I do think the marketing of hair products has a lot to do with it though.

greetings & thank you for going through the trouble to log in and support my lil ol channel. I truly appreciate it. I do think you're on to something with the impact product marketing and brand ownership changes has had on the representation of our hair types because yes these brand expansions are all about capturing a broader customer base which isn't exclusive to coils, kinks and curls they do indeed change the ingredients and what once worked for the coily kinky girls no longer does. This also impacts the coily kinky ladies ability to get brand partnerships and sponsorships because the products no longer work on their hair so as you noticed they leave the space. Some have been vocal about it and some just stop creating content. It's happened over and over and over again with brand after brand after brand and inactive influencer pages with multiple hundred thousands of subscribers...smh. I remember first coming to YT as a new natural circa 2010 - 2011 before I went to cosmetology school and once the top three influencers I was following started doing wig videos all at the same time (AfricanExport, TarenGuy and one other I have forgotten now but I remember it was 3) I moved on. I wasn't here for that I was here for natural hair care but it did open my eyes to how inorganic the content is because what kind of coincidence is that? None of those creators are active today in the hair space. oh yes you can definitely have fine high density hair. If we're being technical the only true tight curl would be a 3c. The part of the world one is tapping in from absolutely matters too because other hair type charts exist. Until you mentioned the product marketing I really didn't consider how much more IMPACT the brands have over what hair types are represented when it comes to those who are in the space for gratis and paid opportunities. Because if you weren't you'd be using what works for you whether it's sponsored, paid or not, yes? Which most likely means less trying of new products because who is going to go out and constantly buy all of that not knowing if it will work? And not using popular brands may mean less views, slower channel growth, smaller yt checks and not worth being here at all IF that is your focus. Hhhhmmmm.... thank you for sharing your thoughts on this because THIS RIGHT HERE I think is a major factor.

I think people continue to use that as a point of reference to describe their hair because it’s the only thing we initially utilized to teach each other about different hair types and patterns. Perhaps every now and then someone might refer to 4C hair as coily but for the most part with the typing system, I’ve seen it just referred to as curls. I could be wrong but I think it’s just a habit that people have. Unfortunately, since habits are tough to break and 4C coils have been referred to as curls for so long, it may take a while before those with coily hair actually begin to use that word all the time to more specifically identify their hair texture.

greetings & thank you for chiming in. I do agree that more folks say their type 4c vs coily which all type 4 is and that using curls as a catch all has become a general norm. I think being purposeful about and visible with our terminology is key to making the shift. Hair identity crisis is real and it has robbed some of the joy of caring for our own hair. 💛

Yes. thank you for mentioning the cinnabon hair. People act we don't exist or exist because of bad hair care. I call it carpet hair it grows in tight and dense, not up and out. we not as common as the youtube 4 c Whats great about it is that it doesn't tangle unless you comb and break the perfection of the cinnabon coil. lol. I NEVER comb my hair stretching it isnt healthy for it either, nor are afros

I have very defined silky coily hair some say it’s 4a some think it’s 4b like idc 🙄 ik it’s low porosity and easily defines with water 💧 it’s reflects light and look wavy when brushed back. But when I say curly ppl try to say that it’s not type 3 curls 😒 like FOH coils are just tighter curls duhh

    • @basiqueopulence888

Technically coils and curls are different and I do think it keeps things clear when we make the distinction. However so long as we’re giving the proper care for the characteristics of the hair all is well. So IF coils are just tight curls to you are curls large coils? My 4a acts silky when it’s clumped & hydrated but is too thick to brush down now the second I separate it kinks LOL

I think it depends on the person. Some are using curls as an "aspirational" term, and you'll never see they have coils because they only wear their hair loose as a twist or braid out. Some use it as a marketing term to draw in views from a broader curly-identifying audience. Some genuinely don't know what coily means and are making the distinction between their texture and kinky because their hair has a spiral.

My head of hair is a 4c coily crown called Cloud 9. I went natural in 2002 when I was 17, but have learned so many better techniques for length retention, just in the last 3-5 years. I love my strands so much! 💖

greetings & thank you for chiming in. Yes, it definitely depends on the person and I'm happy to read soo far that everyone embraces the hair they have be it coily & kinky or curly and are generalizing vs wanting a different hair type. LOVING your hair is where it's at. I LOVE that you call yours Cloud 9!

  • @lindav7158

I don’t want to generalize, but I’ see that coilies often protective style their hair more often than the curlies or waives or straights. I wear my coils out 98% of the time. If I’m in the house (working at home ) my hair is under a bonnet. I have hand in hair syndrome. I think the best care to be given to coilies is to wash it condition it and wear it. The hair develops a coil memory that over time makes it a great head of hair. Constant manipulation, braiding and twisting straightening blowing locing ~~~ it becomes too much. The hair forgets what it’s supposed to do. I know we have options. But…. Just saying. I learned from the African American men in the family who wash their hair, grease it up a bit get it trimmed and keep it moving ❤❤

greetings & thank you for watching & chiming in. All positive voices are welcome here and your observation about washing and wearing out majority of the time to encourage coil memory (and optimal hydration ) is spot on! It’s the easiest and most hair health supportive way one can wear their coils. The overuse of “protective” styling and stretching can hinder hydration and coil memory absolutely. While it’s nice to have options exercising them with balance is key. I appreciate you taking the time to add your thoughts to this thread. 💛

Your video is the first video that I have found that mentions that there are unidentified hair types that are not on the hair type chart. I have been perplexed each time trying to find where I fit in. Your description of “kinky straight” is approximate to what I named as “straight chicken scratch” which fits nowhere on the chart. I also have wavy hair with a clear S-pattern and a small curl on the end. I never see black women pictured in the wavy hair categories when clearly we have wavy hair too.
When my “straight chicken scratch” surrounds the wavy hair, it gives the appearance of frizzy or dry hair which it clearly is not. In addition to being fine, it is such a challenge to find products because neither white nor black products work well for both types. I do believe that we should be the expert on our own hair type, no matter what it is called.

    • @basiqueopulence888
      @basiqueopulence888  2 месяца назад

greetings & thank you for chiming in. now straight chicken scratch is a hoot I have never heard this term in reference to hair. thank you for making me laugh today even if that was not your intention LOL Yes we definitely do have wavy and combination hair these images on these charts aren't curated with that in mind probably because it isn't thought as common as the curlier and coily types among us. those of us with multiple patterns on our head have the unique challenge of styling to make them appear the same via setting on twists knots or braids or rods even or just letting them be and accepting their differences so long as they are optimally hydrated and balanced all is well. I'd love to see an image of this straight chicken scratch you have. I've worked with lots of hair over the years but have no doubt that I've yet to see it all.

thank you soo much! I’m happy to hear you had stylist partners to assist in making your journey easy. When I was behind the chair servicing two different clients bases in Northern and Southern California after moving from Hampton, VA I was focused on my clients so I had zero time or desire to do any videos. I barely maintained my Instagram & Facebook! I WAS BUSY and referred out clients I couldn’t take on to other qualified stylists. So I get why there aren’t more stylists in this space the very busy ones truly don’t have the time to make videos dispensing free information. 😉 Now that I’m scaling my product line which still allows me to provide quality hair care options and expanding into holistic health coaching - content creation has a place in how I reach and help more people. It takes time to record & edit these videos so I keep them as simple as possible. I love our natural hair and want it to be as easy as possible so more of us feel confident and beautiful just as God made us. It’s truly better for our overall health which is why I started wearing my hair natural in the first place - better overall health by eliminating relaxer chemicals and elevating my dietary choices. I receive and return those blessings to you & appreciate you being here. 🌼

I agree and I just found out I have coily hair. Didn't know what to call her. But what makes you say 4? Not sure where I am. my scalp portion lays flat and looks silky goes into a deep or loose wave as it loosens up day by day. The ends in just one portion in the back may be a 4 but I don't know. I call it combination hair.

So long as your regiment is working for you you're golden!

the hair coveting with our people particularly black women is starting to annoy the heck out of me. Like at some point the self loathing needs to stop. Cut it out, care for ypur hair, grow it out if you like long hair and stop drooling over hair thats nothing like yours. Ugh I use to have grace but now im sick of it. Now i know why coveting is a sin.

@Brandiisbeloved I hear you and do understand the annoyance creeping in. Take a breath and keep having grace for them because it is truly and unhealthy way for them to exist. 🤗 I’ve had the experience a time or three of telling a client Sis it’s apparent you just don’t like your hair so nothing done to it will change that until you resolve your negative beliefs about your hair. Perhaps another stylist and a therapist is better suited for you. The Supreme Creator of ALL made no mistakes - embrace how you were made and take great care of yourself hair and all and happiness is yours. 💕
