Great video! I learned much from that. It is amazing that Master Ip Chun retained this much sensitivity, reflex, footwork etc at age of 70+. This is a great example of how Wing Chun helps you to understand your body through very simple exercises.
2:05 - when you try so hard to dominate an old man with aggression then get smacked on the nose for it. Adding tension clearly made it more possible for Ip Chun to sense the strikes and openings, amazing exhibition of composure by the old master.
Darknives, thank you for explaining. I find it funny to hear people comment and say "there was no kicking" "there was no takedowns" and junk like that. People, like he said, it's a drill called Chi Sau. It is NOT sparring. It's ultimately not even competition. It's all about helping each other learn sensitivity. This is a beautiful art and I have loved learning it. Please be respectful.
I'm not a "hater" but, with all due respect, nobody's "fighting" in this video, I don't think anyone in history has ever "fought" like this. As my Wing Chun teacher told me to begin with, chi sao is not fighting, it's an exercise to develop attributes that can be helpful in fighting.
the caveman the exercise is to develop the sense through one’s arms in CQB, to control the situation, not for offense. Think that this system is limited to this exercise is total ignorance. A open minded disciple could adapt Wingchun to various styles, if he get the very core, the basic concepts.
@@solus161 so funny why would you put yourself in the situation like this with this old man playing arm tricks if you could just jab him, leg kick elbows and knees.
@@rosenamajunas1159 this is just an exercise, a contest where people compete in defined skills. But it requires fine motor nerves and good footwork to not getting overwhelmed, meaning it's easier to avoid/negate/block jab, kick, elbow etc. What looks like to you (two men swinging their arms) is one stress testing other opening for strike. But if your opponent is way bigger than you, that's another story. In my country, wingchun, and all other varieties are taught to police forces and their wingchun could be different. Masters like Ipchun are like textbook, and instructors learning from them could develop their own varieties.
Most of the people who talk bad about Wing Chun probably haven't grasp the understanding of it.Here is a Man who has lived longer than all of us and live Wing Chun.None of us youngster have any right to say anything bad, great job GM Ip Chun
Anyone who talks with disrespect about a great master like Ip Chun (or any other master who has trained upon years and years), using ignorant comments like "I would take control of his wrist" etc, only shows that they have not achieved the true spirit of martial arts, which is first and foremost respect to people who have devoted their lives to martial arts.
The greatest achievement is selflessness. The greatest worth is self-mastery. The greatest quality is seeking to serve others. The greatest precept is continual awareness. The greatest medicine is the emptiness of everything. The greatest action is not conforming with the worlds ways. The greatest magic is transmuting the passions. The greatest generosity is non-attachment. The greatest goodness is a peaceful mind. The greatest wisdom is seeing through appearances.
Chi Sau is a training game. The game part is trying to get your opponent to make a mistake and thus create an opening. The training part is in developing the sensitivity in (not just) the arms and wrists. As this develops with practice, the opponents intentions can be felt early as well as reactions speed up now that the arm no longer has to wait for the eye to relay signals to the brain. No hits are counted and no score is kept as the practitioners are really trying to help each other.
This is really a great video. Two reasons. 1. Sifu Ipchun having the courage and energy to still face unknown wing chun practitioners publicly in free chi sao. 2. How much disrespect and ego outsiders can include in their chisao just to show how much better they are than a 75 year old man.
Damn!!!!!! the old man is fast!!!!!!!!! He's a perfect example of that........... "YOU JUST NEVER KNOW HE REALLY IS" type........at first glance.........he's a very harmless looking old man........but here.........he's lightning quick, and his hands are quicker then his mind...... I guess it really is true what a finance coach of mine once said............. those who know don't need to say anything........those who don't know....say all the time
Believe me, they would have shown him much less respect if they had gone easy on him. Yip Chun wanted the world to see how far his western students have come since the 70's. It is Wing Chun philosophy to train in the most realistic manner possible without anyone getting harmed. The fact that some of these guys are really going for it only further underlines Yip Chun's skill.
What many people unfamiliar with Wing Chun often assume to be different techniques are often the same techniques but being applied in a different context. For example a front thrusting kick and a side thrusting kick are the same kick. It is the opponent that has changed position, thus the concept and application change but the technique stays the same.
Excuse my language, but.....FUCKING AWESOME!! Just wonderful. I would love to learn this since I am soon going to have hip-replacement surgery, and I don't know if I will be able to even throw a kick afterwards. But this is just great!!!
What this training adds to the Kung Fu is an increased ability to counter and deflect and a much more instinctive way of applying techniques. The actual striking is left out for obvious reasons. It does seem counter intuitive in the very beginning, but it very quickly animates the "static" techniques learnt in the forms.
Ha ha this is amazing ;D RESPECT I looove many forms of martial arts ( if that is what this is , pardon my ignorance ) I find it totally fascinating and would so love to participate with some one else to take classes . Thanks for posting this , very inspiring , loved the last one the most ! ;D
The last guy who fought with ip chun , used a different way of attacking , well done. even though it didnt work out so well , it shows that he understands how to intercept.
@Shindai Guys, gotta remember he is much much older than these younger folk. But still a man his age to perform such things at his age, I applaud him and look up to him.
In Wing Chun there are many concepts for attacking (breaking) the leading or trailing leg. Would having snapped one of your opponents legs off count as a takedown? (with respect).
Alright, but what exactly makes you think that he would let you gain control of his wrist and how are you assuming that you are going to do this? Do you know what he would attempt to do to counter it?
That's a fair point. I've been to a seminar led by Rawcliffe and he's ridiculously good at what he does, so I assume it's just him and his mate playing around and having some fun when they chi sau, rather than bad wing chun or anything. I still find it fun to watch, I hope you do too :)
I have been lucky enough to witness lots of great chi sau, but the opening of this film where Ip Chun chi saus with Sifu Martin Brierley shows more usage of Wing Chun's energies and minute angles in such a short space of time, it is a mind blowing example of high level Kung Fu. It's apparent these two have practiced together for many years. What do you guys think??
I dont like to mention this, but it appears to me that every fight takes place in the Wrong distance? Wheres the point in striking, if my opponents to far away ? I always thought Chi Sau should teach propper Distance?
Talha Güner i think to make a game of it while demonstrating the old masters energy was consistently flawless, given that the also is a technique to disrupt one's structure
Good day guys. Is there anyone who knows if Grandmaster Ip Chun is teaching the short stretch and high kick like what Sifu Leung Bik taught Grandmaster Ip Man?
That's a shame, may I ask how come? I'm trying to work up the funds and contacts to go train there for a month, I'm in Wales and don't drive so it's kinda awkward. Went to a seminar he did in November though, insane skills on the guy, good laugh too. I'm gutted for you that you had to stop :(
Sorry, I couldn't tell you, I only borrowed the DVD back in 2008 and I think it was entirely Chinese packaging. It had some really great displays, though :) I may upload more clips if I ever find any but I think this is it :(
@Shindai Okay, so it was hard to find this song :) I got some track id software that recognized the song, but name was in Chinese, so I was forced to draw these hieroglyphs with my hands in order to get them recognized by another software into letters and symbols I can actually copy, to put them in Google search box and go through Chinese sites while translating them to English to Google translate.. so - song is called: Qingyue Collection - 12 Kung Fu - "Dragon Song 3 and I got the mp3 :-P
Wing Chun adapts itself to a practitioners size and strength. Ip Chun has a very technical, precise and minute style as he is relatively small of stature. Ip Ching who is considerably taller than his brother has a more fluid, power orientated style. Wing Chun is about adapting to the body you have and I think both men have done this beautifully.
Bordereye Thats a none constructive coment Against a great Kung Fu grand master A great Sifu and a living legend, He's been training his whole life The slaps on his arms are to show You how solid his block is and how Strong his stance is ..... Do you train ?
They tend to think that their opponent will stand there and let them do those things! i mean, they trap the hand and pull it back and then strike like 100 times with their chain punches, my question is..what makes you think they guy is still going to be there or that he isnt going to go for the shoot or for the clinch..or if he knows how to box he knows how to fight in close, or if he knows muay thai he can fight in close as the training in MT teaches them, elbows knees advances clinch grappling
Why does everyone ask that? No martial art can stop bullets, nothing makes you invincible, it can only give you an advantage in some situations why are people still asking this?
Wing Chun theory states that all kicking has an inherent weakness in that one leg must be removed from the ground which considerably diminishes the effectiveness of the stance (this is a fact). However, the longer range and increased power of the legs when compared with the arms (hands) means that no complete martial art can ignore kicking.

respect for a great master - the best thing with kung fu is to see elder men being agile, aware, and combative

Put in there an amateur boxer....
Look, how responsive master Ip Chun is. He is the real deal Wing Chun master
75 years old guys 75 ... fucking amazing for that age!
Nice to see a fellow human with a brain the size of a brain instead of a grape.
