A couple of things I noticed playing the deck a bit: -You want as few lands as possible because 1. Citadel 2. You don't want a land on top when you combo - Counterbalance is so free in this deck - combat research and curious obsession are nice cheap advantages engines that give Francisco 1 power -If you play entomb you might as well have a razaketh in since it's cauldronable -Consecrated sphynx is amazing in this deck, you ramp so hard with your commanders that it's super easy to cast
Really glad you guys made a video on Francisco, I've been considering building him and now I have a base list I can work with (since I'll probably wanna make a casual build that's maybe more pirate focused, but having a cEDH list for when I want to get into the format is super nice too)
this was a really cool episode seeing u guys just rattle off cards off the top the knowledge is really impressive actually you put together a list of like 25 none land cards together so so quick once u knew the colours
Imp Seal also lets you put Ballista on top and gives you a counter from explore then put it in the graveyard. I guess this assumes you have a counter, but it gives you an extra one to try the combo an additional time.
Listened to this on my way home from work as a podcast, and watched again to see with the cards. You guys should do this more often! You only get used to brewing the more you do it, and it was super entertaining!
I enjoyed watching your brewing process. Surprised we didn't see counterbalance in the deck to go with top. Also, is so unfortunate that Francisco has 0 power so he's just expensive Roger without the combo of another pirate.
@@thedoctor1471 Pretty sure they're talking about how it doesn't get anywhere on its own. It would be helpful if Francisco could start getting counters and manipulating the top of your deck (with the explore triggers) on its own before trying to combo off and without relying on the other partner commander.
Also i was expecting aetherflux reservoir to go along with top and citadel. Obviously a 3 card combo but the decm seems to have a lot of tutors anyways. And reservoir gives some life gain even if not going off
I love these style of shows, deckbuilding on the fly around a card/mechanic. Always a good idea to see/hear how others approach a format or just their overall deck building styles
I've seen a lot of entombs being played, but it seems like no one wants to run unmarked grave. I understand that it's quite a bit worse, but in most decks that want a specific card in a graveyard (that isn't legendary) I think it can definitely be worth it Reshape is very similar if you're running it to put a walking ballista in your graveyard
My first thought was Ghost of Ramirez DePietro purely because you can stack the triggers so that you basically always draw a card when you want to off of Ramirez combat damage trigger after exploring. But that also feels more casual.
Great episode! Do more of these please 🎉 Also I really wanted to see an orzhov list. If you're going to use walking ballista seems like Heliod is an easy include. And with your recent stax video y'all noted orzhov might just be the best stax list now. I'm just imagining this list with all the black and white hate pieces. Archon of Emeria, dauntless dismantler, dranith, abolisher, ranger capt, dranna and linvalla, dauthi, opposition agent, aven mind censor, archivist, esper sentinel and recruiter of the guard. Did I just build the deck 😂
I brewed Francisco like 2 weeks ago. My deck list is called Tightrope Frank and pairs Francisco with Akiri Line-Slinger and Lurrus as companion. You mull aggressively looking for mana, draw engines/ tutors or an early Naus. Akiri gets surprisingly big by the way. Commander damage has happened.
True, but you're doing that slowly and in public, somebody's gonna tutor up interaction or oncodentally hit you with a bog way before you're ready a lot of the time.
"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" the Bush here is the metaphor for the graveyard. With the ballista in the graveyard. Im not entirely sold myself yet, but it was what i thought when you asked for a name 😂
I built Malcolm Francesco and it’s pretty solid and I run a decent amount of pirates. Exploring multiple times due to your pirates combat damage helps you thin your deck as you can put 2-3 cards in your GY. It’s a good loot like effect while getting Francisco pretty big
Hoarding broodlord would've been so cool. Broodlord tutor saw in half, saw the brood in half, get cauldron and ballista Cast ballista into the grave then convoke cauldron with the two lords and bam
Something I like is a very specific senario with Agathas + Ballista + Bowmasters. If you have a large army on the battlefield, you can ping people like crazy by removing counters from the army if you cant get Francisco on the battlefield.
At the 5:00 mark so maybe yall touch on it later BUT hoarding broodlord also is a 1-card win con. Broodlord gets saw In half and you only need to have 1 more mana with Frank in play to cast saw on broodlord. The copies get cauldron and ballista, and you convoke the cauldron with the tokens then ballista for 0. I added a reanimation package with shallow grave and victimize recently to my sultai pile and its solid
I know it’s a long shot but what about putting Urza, Lord High Artificer into the deck. Helps all your artifacts tap for blue and a chance to cast a card for free and also rearrange the top of the deck with every use. This might be a bad option but I have been running him as my commander and have been wanting to find a way to add black to the deck haha
The Reality Chip would go so hard in this deck. You are already playing Bolas's Citadel and Sensei's Top, and with how many artifacts youre playing you could toss in an Etherium Sculptor too
A great land include that can help you with a little advantage and can catch your thoracle players sleeping is Mikokoro, center of the sea. A colorless legendary land and you can pay two to have everyone draw a card. Can snipe a Thassa player out of nowhere.
If you see this comment ; Akiri Lurrus and Francisco is spicy and could be good as a breach line grinding station using the graveyard with lurrus to get back to cauldron if it gets destroyed or countered. let's not forget lurrus let's you play peer into the abyss, naus and final parting. red white gives you enlightened and gamble as tutor but mostly is using silence effects.
Nooo guys, I still need this to be unexplored/bad until February so I can smash the EU qualis :P Jokes aside, I am super excited to see where you bring this to by the end of the video. I've had the deck brewed for about 2 weeks now and it has gone through a few iterations. Disregarding performance, it has a very interesting niche :)
Great video! As a Malcolm / Kediss player I’m happy any time people talk about pirates lol Also Dylan that shirt goes hard. Had to go order it after the video 😂
I tried building the kraum version with a bunch of pirates but I think it's too unfocused. There were some cool synergies like pyre of heroes turning francisco into either malcolm or glinthorn buccaneer - or sacking a ragavan to tutor a dockside to the board. It also allowed you to play goblin welder & engineer to set up the soul cauldron line easier. Other potential includes for this deck though: > Tribute Mage tutors for soul cauldron > Scrapyard recombiner tutors for ballista > Are there no cheap pirates worth running? Every pirate that deals damage is letting you basically surveil & make a treasure
I would put in all the effects that sacrifice an artifact to search a artifact into play so you have the potential of saccing walking balista to get agatha's cauldron into play
Paco is short for Francisco in spanish. Maybe something like "Paco´s final parting", some last words before shooting everybody down. Love your chanel, cheers from Spain guys!

cEDH players looking for more dual lands should be trying the Shadowmoor Block Filter lands (Sunken Ruins, Cascade Bluffs, etc) When you said “we don’t really have a big beater” I thought “they should play Zephyr Singer” (the 3/4 flying vigilance pirate with convoke)

I was thinking this - especially when your commander is the key piece to a combo.
