I don’t have TikTok. I feel like I’m not missing anything, except maybe irritation and time-wasting. 😊
Yes. I've found that everything I "need" to see from Tiktok will eventually make it to another social media platform that I _am_ on 😆
@@marthaj67I see it way later on fb or IG
Not really because facebook/ Instagram is highly censored. Lots of worldwide news u miss by not being on tiktok if ur interested in that type of information
I personally find tiktok to be much more entertaining and useful than Facebook and Instagram. You just have to curate your following and you’re set
i dont have tiktok but unfortunately a lot of this stuff makes it onto youtube and instagram so i still see it
Ragebait has been a thing for a while - and there's studies about rage/doom scrolling and how its overall contributing to a lot of nasty feelings that people have, about themselves, others, the world, etc. It's cool of you to address this, because it's not something "everyone" knows. I have to remember that I grew up BEFORE the internet so I remember when a lot of these things were transferred into the digital space. But a 15 year old? They were born when it was well underway. Same thing with filters, etc. If its all you've EVER known, how do you spot them?
That's such a good point. I think for younger people there's not really a degree of separation anymore from your "real" life vs social media. It's such crazy uncharted territory with the internet, things are changing all the time for better and for worse, and we are all just along for the ride!
Yeah, hahaha, I saw this video and had the reaction of the "first time?" meme because I use reddit and falling for ragebait is basically a rite of passage 😂
A good point...bullying has always been around and now the kids cannot separate themselves, it's in their face 24/7 with internet....the first 8 yrs of my life had no TV, best years.. we read 'real books' we played family games (snakes and ladders, even scrabble was back then.. card games, and I feel like family was more connected) if you had a nasty bully at school, you left them at school, they couldn't attack you on the internet. 10yr olds committing suicide because of internet bullying is just terrifying!!😢😢😢
I think what bothers me is: the world already has enough anger, enough frustration, and enough outrage. Adding more to it through these kinds of videos is disappointing. (So glad you don't do this, Kelly!!)
The title of this video is not rage bait??????
I refuse to engage with those sorts of accounts that are just so unabashedly wasteful. Nope and nope. I have a respect for my wallet, the environment and I refuse to just mindlessly scroll on a never ending overconsumption journey. But also if this is a thing when I was 20 I would have liked and commented and put it on Visa.
I always hated the 100 layers of nail polish/foundation videos for being wasteful
I 100% agree with you on this. At 49 years old I am much wiser and contientious of the content I watch and what I choose to buy. But I was more inclined to impulse buy when I was younger.
@@nikkismith2858It used to be mostly for personal entertainment and they just record it for their channel or the like, like Jenna Marbles and SimplyNailogical.
But now the ones doing them are literally purely for whatever type of engagement and also to get sponsored by a specific brand. OR also just to get that 15minute virality moment. Unfortunately.
Thank you for calling this nonsense out. Fame used to come to those with some sort of talent, now it comes to those who act the most like fools… it’s exhausting…
Tbh, there always has been a subsector of the entertainment market for "fools of the week". A clown doing dangerous stunts, outlandish stories in a Victorian magazine, etc. But it's only ever 15 minutes of fame; the ones with real talent (and luck and connections!) are the ones we still talk about today.
To me, all ragebait is clickbait but not all clickbait is ragebait. Clickbait could be something that piques curiosity- like "making my own foundation?!" As an intro for a video where they use colour theory to mix pigments into their skin colour. Ragebait is the Duxbury foundation method lmao.
Clickbait used to only refer to a misleading hook to draw someone in. If the video delivers or doesn’t lie at all, I don’t think that should be considered clickbait, unless the definition has changed into something not so bad. When the first term was first created, it was always something bad.
Rage bait is so heavy right now. I think that's Mikaylas how gig. She knows the accent is fake, the makeup is very basic, and the over filtering herself into a different person gets people talking and gets her the views and engagement she wants. Even if it's people hate watching. Such a strange trend.
She’s not pleasant to watch in any way.😮
and she’s so loud😭
@@theandy4667 that's intentional too lol she's even said that
@@c8creates i know but it hurts my ears😖
@@theandy4667 same here! And the videos hurt my eyes lol
One of the things I like about RUclips is that one can block channels. When something like that shows up on my feed I block them immediately.
They still pop up under videos tho. RUclips has a way of forcing content it knows the viewer doesnt like. Another form of rage baiting
Media literacy is critical and entirely lagging right now!!
Tbh I prefer when content creators acknowledge the algorithm and ask you to comment to help them do better within it. Like Robert Welsh, always says something like “comment to help me with the algorithm”. if you like a creator, and if you like their content, you want to help them, however you can help them, and posting a simple comment is not a lot of work to help a creator whose content you enjoy.
Like this 😊
100% agree
❤ Robert. And agree! I always take the time to write a quick comment and like the videos I appreciate and the creators I want to support. I hope my favs never feel like they have to sacrifice their integrity to earn a living.
Ditto
I think it’s super unsustainable because there’s just no way you can create content that constantly goes viral or sparks a kind of rage. You can’t make a full platform based on it, but I think that’s why makeup is a decent ragebait platform because you can do crazy makeup all the time and be consistent with the “insanity”
Adding "rage-baiting" to my list of reasons I won't ever join TikTok! Thoughtful videos from creators like Kelly are more up my alley.
Videos from Kelly
Up my Alley ...
Yeah that sounds rhyming 😂
I think you’re spot on with all of this. Rage bait is also fueling all of our news as well. I would also like to point out that creators are also using lying and negative attention to make lots of money… like Mikayla N with her mascara scandal. She was able to profit from that whole thing, never addressed it, never apologized, but benefited greatly from lying and I see it more and more with creators. It’s super sad.
Yeah, that whole situation set my "humanity doomsday clock" forward a couple years 🙃 We can't live like this!
It’s why the best thing we can do is NOT comment or give these people attention but it feels like that’ll never happen 😕
The ones who mispronounce names and places wrong on purpose makes me side eye so hard. Yay u got 2000 comments. What a business plan.
I remember how a certain creator with a purple pyramid for a head used to do that all the time.
My husband gives me headlines as if they’re facts 😂 recently he told me a celebrity has split from her fiance. I read the article (he did not) and they did split up FOUR YEARS AGO .. before getting back together. He was like, “why would they say that in the headline??” He is 40 years old. People just believe things and it blows my mind but I do think being in the creator space has made me SO skeptical that I don’t believe things now til they’re irrefutable. Even then I’m waiting for someone to tell me it’s just a joke
I do not watch Tik tok. I spend enough time on other platforms and I refuse to add another 😆. I have enough rage, disappointment and so on in my own life trying to make it. I want thoughtful educational content not stuff that makes me rage. I’ll let the ones I do follow keep me informed on it 🙂.
Example of click bait….”Leaving RUclips…” Literally 99% of time a video is titled that, they are NOT leaving and have no intention of leaving. I refuse to click on those. If they DO leave, then I’ll know to go watch that video if I wanna know why. But, haven’t had to do that yet…
Yeah, I’ve seen this just in the last week or so from Tati (Tatibeauty whatever). I had only recently begun to watch her and her personality is engaging and funny but I immediately unsubscribed.
This is exactly why I'm glad i just watch beauty content on RUclips, and not tiktok. I avoid the ragebate nonsense, I had no clue these "trends" were even a thing! so wasteful
I just watched a TikTok last week of a family claiming their newly built house is haunted and it's so obvious that it's fake and everyone is responding as such and calling them out. It literally never occurred to me that they likely did it on purpose for engagement but it makes total sense. Thanks for the video!
I always watch at 2x speed and I thought the mascara was called Root of All Evil
After Come Hell or High Water....
As someone who has sort of been pressured by the beauty community into like "neutralizing" my pinkish undertone I'm near insulted by the intense blush underpainting technique 😆
Thanks for adding the temperature in Celsius! 😅
This whole thing is what made me start commenting on videos and photos of people that I like! I didn't use to comment at all online but it's very frustrating to see the rage bait being more "praised" (by the algorithm) than people that create stuff that I actually think is cool hahaha I love your videos Kelly, you talk a lot about stuff that goes through my mind!
Amazing, Kelly! I had no idea. I don't like the direction that social media is taking. It isn't about being helpful anymore...it is about money. Sad.
Adding comment because you deserve your engagement 😘
She truly does, her content is always a step above.
I agree with everything! I stopped commenting on videos like that because I knew I would just see it more on my feed!
Also - your earrings, pleaseeee link them. I can’t find them for the life of me! 😩❤️
Such a great idea for a video, Kelly! Loved hearing your take on this!
This reminds me so much of people who make videos saying their kids said “the wildest thing” when everybody knows that they in fact did not say that thing.
My three nieces all said some hilarious things as kids, but that was pre social media, TG.
@@maryeckel9682 I don’t mean to say that it doesn’t happen, We all know that it happens, but the things I’ve seen posted are so incredibly staged. It’s very much intended for the creator to gain attention!
And kind of in an exploitative way, I mean that’s a whole can of worms on its own, but I think a lot of that started with people posting stuff like this.
The minute somebody made me aware of rage bait, and the fact that a couple of the influencers I used to enjoy had created a video with that purpose, I immediately unsubscribed from them both and stopped watching them. And I stopped buying products from the one who has her own brand. That is disgusting that influencers do that.
16:52 Re: hand gesture for talking on the phone ☎️. I am Gen Z (23) and I use the 📞 🤙 to gesture calling on the phone.
But I bet that some Gen Alpha kids do the flat hand to represent a cell phone 📱
Very interesting phenomena!
Every time I see a video like that I block the creator, this seems to help
It’s so effective because it is the hardest thing in the world to zip you lips and ignore something that makes your angry or annoyed, smart but evil
The phenomenon on its own is very scary to me because it teaches people to not empathize with someone because “obviously they’re lying like everyone else”
This is why I don’t scroll TikTok. I will go search a certain creator I enjoy and that’s it. When TikTok first came out I was scrolling then wham it was 2-3 hours later. I don’t want to stare at a screen that long. What kind of life is that. I’d rather be outdoors and/or enjoying family and friends.
Commenting because your video and content in general are worthy of engagement. 😊
Beautiful makeup look as well.
Preach 👏🏼
Thanks for watching!
I think youre right about the clickbate stuff, and that woman slapping on excessive make-up and the sponging it all off and calling it "blending!"😂😂 had us all commenting!! And I remember the shoe crap also, But I was over it all by then and I just flicked past, and I'm starting to watch things, find them stupid and flick past without comment these days. I have favourite content 'creators' people like yourself who put in real effort, research, try products, give honest opinions, not paid for BS to suck up to brands!!! And not just click bait with rubbish content... thank you, keep up the good work. ❤
i rarely comment on videos. But I watch everything you post and look forward to your content. Im happy to provide extra engagement for your chanel :)
5 minutes craft was huge clickbait and I'm guilty of watching those😂
Another aloe vera and banana mask 😅
The Clionadh Stained glass shimmer/glitter ✨ eyeshadow singles are so incredibly beautiful on the eyes! I love that shade you used! Very beautiful look ☺️
I think it’s important to look at it as consumerism all around - I’m consuming content BUT how are they benefitting from my time? If it’s content I enjoy then I’ll engage if not I just keep scrolling.
Love the makeup look - I might have to replicate it today!
One of the MANY reasons I prefer RUclips for beauty and Tik Tok for recipes and information sharing. I prefer old school long form unless its a quick recipe, gardening or complaints about the economy and sharing opinions.
omg yes thank you for talking about this!! ive been noticing this increasing the last... i dont even know, maybe last year or two and so many people fall for it too and i'm like ...PLEASE see through this omg
the only positive thing that could 'shock' me by now, would be a demonstration of eyeliner techniques for hooded eyes, on genuinely hooded eyes
I wish people were half as smart as you are. So far I've stayed away from Tiktok and all these other things, besides YT, and you've just convinced me to continue to stay off. I'm not missing anything. Blessings. X
This is a good reminder to comment on the videos of creators we love. I don’t comment often.
My client with L.D litrally lives for online shock factor so much so she started asking me crazy questions because of what she sore on tik tok
I actually have a friend who doesn't wear shoes, but to my knowledge she hasn't cut up her old shoes to wear into stores, lol. She just doesn't wear shoes. Sometimes she wears "soleless sandals" which basically look more like jewelry but sort of look like shoes if you're not looking closely enough. She does carry a pair of actual sandals with her in her purse, though, in case she needs to go somewhere where she absolutely has to wear shoes, like a hospital or something. I think cutting up shoes is ridiculous if that's what those TikTokers actually did, but some people actually do not wear shoes. :P
So she has (faux) diamonds on the soles of her feet? (Old song reference)
I’ve also seen videos where people rip out book covers and replacing them with prettier covers the content creators made by themselves. My heart drops a little every time I happen to come across those videos
I'm not even happy to know there are people who do that.
@@maryeckel9682 yes, they must have some guts to do such things
Tbh I think a lot of viewers became fascinated with Meredith’s content because a lot of people view it as satire or - if you have no understanding of applying makeup - genuine curiosity in learning how to apply makeup and thinking that applying that much foundation is good. We don’t learn how to apply makeup, it’s something we have to teach ourselves which is why we are seeing teens, tweens and pre-teens sharing skincare and makeup routines. I think it’s worse with skincare because they learn the hard way that some products are not meant for their skin, hence why there has been so much backlash from parents and dermatologists. And I think that these platforms are trying to get us to watch more but we’re not consuming video content like before because there are too many platforms now. That’s why they’re incentivizing creators that create a video longer than a minute, using influencers like talent that is repped by the platform like an agency would.
you are so smart and informative, i love watching your videos and learning! 😩
Algorithm feeding words
Love your look today, and this is important content to help people consume social media content more warily (or just scroll past).
What worries me most is the stoopidity of the oh so many who fall for this. I love RUclips for the Do not recommend This channel flag
It reminds me of people destroying expensive makeup palettes. Wow it was 4 years ago. The James Charles palette drama, and now I know which channels to block.
Ridiculous things are working... 🤪
Ok but tht clionadh eyeshadow is so beautiful I’ve never seen a sparkle like tht on camera 😍😍
honestly thank you for the media literacy lesson nestled inside the beauty space :)
To me if they have to tell me "stay until the end" or "don't scroll away if you care" I immediately leave. Feels like bait
I think rage baiting is ridiculous.🙄 Thanks for taking the time to do your research on this topic…I’m really enjoying your content.😊
Great vid, Kelly! Never knew about rage bait. Just wow...
Loved hearing your take on this!
Exactly!! I see this so much and its infuriating and i immediately scroll away. Ive also been seeing weird videos that have no context and then people commenting for context and ive also seen people purposely misspelling/mispronouncing certain words for engagement 😪 (omg i just reached the part where u started talking about this haha)
Anyway i always love how you talk about different aspects of the beauty industry instead of just product reviews(which i love too!) and different perspectives too 🤗🤗
Yep I was thinking of Meredith duxbury. That always grossed me out
Those earrings look like they’re so heavy and about to tear your ears! Obviously, they’re gorgeous, just worried about your ears 😂
I see it as desperate attempts for attention and money.its kinda sickening really
Appreciate the honesty.
omg i saw the shoe couple too! i completely fell for it, good we have you to be smart about things :) !
This is why I don't like tik tok, how tragic!! I've never known how the algorithm worked, now I do I won't be commenting or liking x
I would love to add something:
its not that the Algorithm doesn’t know the difference- it’s just not important. It’s only important for the Algorithm that WE stay on the platform and engaging a lot. And rage is the perfect tool for it. It works so much better than joy.
It’s math, it’s cold calculation however this turns out for our civilization…
This was so interesting! I really enjoy this series. 👍🏻🌻 Also that Clionadh sparkle is gorgeous! 👌🏻💜✨
God does rage baiting expose how unversed people are with critical thinking skills
Thanks for this deep dive!! ❤ this is why I gravitate towards RUclips and instagram primarily. Those things still exist on those platforms but not to the extent that they do on TT…I was on there for a few months and found it very draining.
For content I don't like I don't engage at all.
I don't even report rage bait.
I just go click not interested and don't recommend channel.
I'm not on any other social media.
Yes…there is a difference between entertaining and rage baiting. A really big beauty influencer recently click baited and it was so annoying. She even said she wasn’t getting enough likes and engagements on RUclips…yadayadayada. I found it really annoying because I like her regular content.
I know which video you are talking about. She left for a year, came back, and has not really evolved with the platform. Yes, her views have gone down because we found other channels and genres.
Nice video Kelly 😊
A similar video on rage baiting I saw was from Hannah Alonzo, I think people should give that one a watch.
I would love to see a Hannah/Kelly collab!
Love the eye look!!!!
ragebait is definitely not a new concept (not that you said it was) . it’s been a thing for a long time and i feel like we’ve seen it on tiktok for a while now in various communities. and its been a convo with beauty brands explicitly releasing things that exclude certain groups bc they knew the engagement that would come from people complaining. i explicitly do not engage with that content cuz i just can’t bare to contribute to that. some times the bait is harmless and other times it comes at the expense of others and it’s just so annoying either way.
also media literacy is at such an all time low, it’s so unfortunate.
Like YouthForia and that black foundation?
@@maryeckel9682 yup!!!
I love these makeup musings!
I find your videos to be very interesting. I love how you explained these concepts, makes sense. Love your makeup look. Great video.👍✔️💯❗
Hi Kelly great video. Hannah Alonzo made a ragebait analysis video too. It’s so interesting hearing y’all point stuff out. Makes me feel better about mean comments that any engagement is good.
Great video Kelly!
So glad I never got into Tiktok
I love your earrings!!!
Hannah Alonzo also does a great “influencer insanity” video on rage baiting! Thanks Kelley 💕
Lmao I lost it at “afternoon, after for short” 😂
The amount of influencers who will rave about a product that has horrible reviews on Amazon is wild to me. Comment “headphones” and I’ll send you the link. I can’t roll my eyes hard enough at this every time.
Oh yes… most of it is junk.
I’ve also seen the the putting 100 dots of foundation on the face videos a lot too
Love the hoops
I love Saie Dew blush in Rosy.
Me too!!
Great video! Makeup musings is my favorite content! I love watching people do their makeup and I love sociological questions especially relating to beauty. So these videos are a little match made in heaven for me!
Anyways I have never had the type of personality to engage with rage bait or even videos i just dislike, I do feel annoyed watching but never commented or whatever. I never really thought about people doing it on purpose for money. I've seen a few videos on rage bait recently though. These type of videos I think help because it can help you be smarter with the content you consume.
It will be interesting if one day the algorithm will be able to distinguish negative engagement and not push those type of videos.
Ok, so I don’t have tt, so I see some of these on insta. At first, I watched a few, but now I just scroll. They are fake and stupid and I'm not giving them my click. Now, some of those ARE cute (like those where a woman talks about doing everything for her loved one, and I wanna rage, but at the end it's her dog, lol), so I have to have a good eye to catch the 'good ones'.
But yeah, I see a lot of these types of videos or news. Like when they talk about Kim Khardashian and I see comments that don’t believe how she is on the news, and I'm like 'girl, you made a comment. You just added to the hype'.🤦♀️
Also, thanks for adding the Celsius temp, lol.
And, beautiful makeup! And love the earrings. Seems chunky earrings are everywhere and I love it. ❤
I love the phone gesture comment lol I'm 38 and I do the same phone sign as you, Kelly 😂
I have watched the videos asking ppls pf different ages how they hold the phone, etc. It's hilarious!!
Although it’s not an offense, it never ceases to blow my mind how naive people are in falling for it so much, and lining these peoples pockets!
This is to a lesser extent but I've also noticed this phenomenon in fashion videos- the creator will put together an outfit and then pick a jacket or a pair of shoes or something that doesn't mesh well at all and leave a "better" option out.
Commenting on this just because I cannot stand ragebaiting and I want more people to watch this and stop interacting with those videos. 🙄
Awesome video! If people truly don’t like the content they better stop watching, and don’t even think about disliking or writing a comment!
Great video! Love ya, Kelly!
We're fighting over fractions of advertiser pennies with _spelling errors_ now?! 😬😮💨
