    What is blowing me away is that the Bible responds to the challenges of the Age. Initially practically with its links to Jesus and his direct ministry through his example, his miracles, his knowledge of people and the reality of the Judaic traditions. Then increasingly theologically as the church father clarified the tenets. Then philosophically through the ages as man became more intellectually inquisitive. And now forensically as we seek to more fully understand the justifications in an era when Jesus and the Church are under widespread derision and attack.
    It keeps revealing it’s profundity nature through its ability to justify its legitimacy.
    This chap is showing new ways to bring a discernment to studying the Bible. Being able to assess in a modern cynical, overly intellectual age to deeply analyse the factors surrounding the narrative and writing of the New Testament

    As a law graduate, I approve of this message. May I also add a concept which is related to your 1st reason. In the laws of evidence specifically the concept of res gestate which refers to a former exception to the hearsay rule for statements made spontaneously or as part of an act. So basically, if the the witness told a different person about what happened, that other person cannot be asked to present his testimony because it is hearsay. Now, the different witnesses themselves present their testimonies immediately thereafter the startling occurrence so it's admissible in court. Secondly, granting that the witnesses themselves cannot be present in court, the persons they conveyed their message to can still testify because a startling occurrence has just occurred.

    When you speak about only 3 motives for a crime, do you not think that "thrills" or "adrenaline rush" could be an only reason that someone commits a crime? People who are like that may not be interested in gaining money/drugs, power/fame, or sex/relationships. I've known several people in my life who used to steal just for the rush it gave them. They didn't even steal stuff they would use or want.

      @@transient_ I believe that falls into the BS category. In this country, there is literally food overflowing into the streets. The meal deals that are everywhere make survival available to anyone (working or not).
      If you drove me to any (non crime infested) city in this country today, I could feed myself every day with honest day labor (using a homeowner’s tools).
      Stealing for food is a lame excuse for someone too damn lazy to work, or too stupid to walk to a Salvation Army place. I don’t buy it. There’s never a reason to lie. There’s never a reason to steal. Period.
      Besides, what did someone do with the 14-15 years of public education that was offered for no cost? I was homeless twice before I was 18 and I got a very good education. I kept my mouth shut and my ears open. I took AP classes as a senior in Highschool. A year later I was on a greyhound bus in another State going to work on offshore drilling rigs. Dangerous? Yes. Hard as hell? Yes. Did I want to do that? No. Too bad. I had no car and no clothes to be able to do else. What I didn’t have was a wah wah attitude. A year after that, I was the youngest mud engineer in The Gulf of Mexico. If you’re looking for an excuse you’ll find one. If you’re looking for a future, get moving!

Or Rosa Parks not going to the back of the bus? The the store owner that didn't want to bake for a gay couple. Or someone that does weed because its legal in there state so when they are at a state its illegal because they disagree? In all these case people disagree with the law and in some cases the law has been challenged and changed. But before the challenge to the law happens people break the law. The book of Genesis was penned early as well. Although many attribute it to Moses, he could not have witnessed any of the events in it. Also, Genesis does not have any of the indicators that other passages do that it was given by God through dreams or visions, or by commands to write particular things. All the internal evidence indicates that Genesis was written by multiple people who either saw the events that happened, or knew the people who did. This evidence strongly argues in favor of the tablet theory, also known as the Wiseman theory (named for the fellow who discovered the evidence that led him to this theory). This theory puts the creation account of Genesis as having been written by God himself, and given to Adam, perhaps as the means to teach him language, both written and spoken. This theory is supported by good strong indicators in the text. Also, the theory has no problems that are known. It is a theory. It is not proven. But there is one other fact that supports it, though indirectly. Jewish tradition puts the other 4 books of Moses as being by the hand of Moses, but not Genesis. Although Genesis was given to the Jews by Moses, it was never said that he authored it. Genesis does show indications of someone adding new place names to places whose names had changed, which further indicates that Genesis was originally written BEFORE those places changed names. So, it appears that Moses compiled Genesis from multiple older sources. But I'm curious to know how a cold case investigator would handle all these pieces of evidence about Genesis. I think the tablet theory is true, which places the first tablet as being from the hand of God, no later than day 6 or 7 of creation.

    Videos like this are important but please remember that God's Word is true because it is God's Word. The presence of evidence should not necessarily be the basis for someone's faith. It's very easy to get sucked into apologetics and make your faith nothing more than an intellectual exercise. It happened to me and my relationship with God died. It's taken years of tears, sweat, and swirling emotions to even start getting back on the right path. Be careful.

      The Bible is true for us once we have a personal realization about the existence of God as the Bible states. But evidence helps for the skeptical, we should be learning this to make them doubt their unbelief, more than keeping the believer being a believer. These evidences should be like that feeling of “AHA! The world can’t even deny the reliability of the events occurred”. We (as believers and followers of Christ) know in our heart it’s all true. :-)

    • @jacobhegardt6238
      @jacobhegardt6238 3 года назад +5

      Yes I agree with you. Martin Luther, I think, correctly distinguished between what we call the magisterial and ministerial use of reason. The magisterial use of reason occurs when reason stands over and above the gospel like a magistrate and judges it in the basis of argument and evidence. The ministerial use of reason occurs when reason submits to and serves the gospel. In light of the Holy Spirits witness, only the ministerial use of reason is legitimate. We know Christianity is true by the self-authenticating witness of the Holy Spirit living inside of us, witnessing to us, and the personal relationship with the Heavenly Father. A person who knows that Christianity is true on the basis of the witness of the Holy Spirit may also have a sound apologetic which reinforces or confirms for him the Holy Spirits witness, but it does not serve as the basis of belief.
      I do believe that evidence and apologetics can be very persuasive for the skeptic to bring him to believe THAT Christianity is true. In other words, the intellectual belief. But belief IN only comes when you trust in Christ Jesus for your eternal salvation and the self-authenticating Holy Spirit dwelling inside of you. Once you experience that personal relationship with Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father, evidence can only be used to reinforce that belief and add reassurance in the times of possible doubt. Reason and evidence do not stand above the self-authenticating Holy Spirit witnessing to us and the relationship with Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.

    • @savonjames2670
      @savonjames2670 3 года назад +7

      Faith and reasoning can go hand and hand. Yes the Bible is true simply because it’s God’s word, and there’s also evidence that help in building confidence in what we believe. Both is necessary.

      I recently heard Jim speak on this passage, where many many Christians have taken the verse 'blessed are those who believe without seeing' as, we should just accept/believe without evidence, and we are 'blessed' in doing so.
      As Jim points out, the blessed are us who did not hang out with JC as Thomas did. Furthermore, Jesus was constantly providing evidence to support his words through miracles etc. The very next verse in John 20, says...
      30 Therefore Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book;
      31 but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

    I am reading your book "Cold Case Christianity" now and a thought occurred to me. In recent years I have had a shift in my theology and am seeing a lot of evidence that supports what some call ultimate, universal reconciliation. I am curious, have you ever investigated this line of thinking, using your investigative techniques? It seems to me that there is quite a bit of evidence involving God being love and His never ending mercy, etc, that lead me to believe that the opportunity for repentance does not end at physical death. Also verses like "every knee will bow", and (in Christ all died and all rose) and (those He foreknew), seem to indicate the ultimately every one of God's offspring (everyone according to Acts 17) will turn to Him. As I said, I am curious if you have ever applied investigative techniques, rather than theological ones to this subject.
    By the way, I see great value in approaching scripture from the perspective you share in your book. Preconceptions and confirmation bias seem to be real killers in the search for truth. Thanks.

      Do you believe in Hell?

    • @kathyh.1720
      @kathyh.1720 Год назад

      It doesn't matter whether one believes in Jesus or not in terms of every knee bowing because when the time comes and we're all face to face with God, there is no choice but to bow and acknowledge His holiness and sovereignty. Then they will be judged. Also, Jesus dying for the sins of the world gives everyone access to God, but not everyone chooses that. It doesn't mean universal salvation because it's not actually our sins that Jesus took onto Himself that keep us out of God's eternal heaven but it's rejecting the Holy Spirit. Remember that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the only unforgivable sin, which means that that's what will keep people in eternal separation from God after the judgement day. When you read the verses that you consider to be evidence for universal reconciliation, make sure you read the entire passage and the entire book so that you know what the topic is that is being written about and then see how that particular verse fits into the point that the author is making. This can be really helpful in better understanding what some verses actually mean. God bless you.

    can you explain why the bible has changed over time if it is the true word of god i mean the changes we know of are small but there is a big one the women who jesus saves from being stoned may have been added later as it isn't in the earliest copies we have

      I know this question is directed Mr. Wallace, but I thought I would respond in an attempt to be helpful. It's true that there is no proof that it changed. However, there are early manuscripts with it and early manuscripts without it. The big question is, if this indeed was an addition, does it change anything? Or the inverse: If you take it out does it change anything? The answer to that question is no. The narrative in John 7:52-8:11 harmonizes well with the rest of the life and ministry of Jesus. With or without the narrative, the theology and message of the Bible is the same. So, since the vast majority of everything else (over 95 percent) is unchanged; it's an extremely dependable document.

    every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. Bible prophecies are continuing to be fulfilled. Life and love are miracles from God each day. God is love. God is glorious. God hates sin. God's purposes for our lives is to choose to walk in the faith of the Lord each day..... and to choose to love God/the Holy Trinity each day.

    So the thing is i have believed that Christ could and if he did exist, then he did work miracles for a while, however now i have much less doubt and do believe he is the son of God (i think). I still have doubts due to my emotional and mental states and likely my pride, however the main doubts I've had about the bible are, what was added later, and what meanings changed based on faulty translations (especially into english).
    So this channel has already in the past hour help me believe that the bible doesn't have simply falsified accounts, although id like to know was Jesus crucified alone or with 2 others alongside him (seems a hard thing to argue about to me). Mostly im worried about mistranslations changing the true meaning of what happened, example Leviticus 18 and 20: man shall not lay with man as he lay with woman, I've heard accounts of this being man shall not lay with boy originally. Because of this i have trouble deciding on what church i could possibly go to to be baptized in the holy spirit, also caronavirus, i don't know how i can be reborn if i can't go to a church in the first place.

      Saved from what? There are some instances of the word 'salvation' that are clearly in reference to eternity, and some cases where it is in reference to salvation from something temporal. Women being saved by child-bearing, Peter calling out to be saved from drowning, etc. Baptism is a work, and so is excluded from being a part of our eternal salvation, so it's clearly a saving from something temporal.

    Sam Harris might be an atheist, but he is right that everything we decide is caused by something. We don't have "free will", we have a will, the ability to make choices, but every effect has a cause. No one's will is free of cause. Scripture even supports this.
    The creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by the same who subjects him in hope; and
    It is God working in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.
    Just the fact that God foreknows everything negates the idea of free will. Can the leopard change it's spots? The Ethiopian change his skin? Then so too let those do good that are accustomed to doing evil. It's impossible. You can't will yourself to do otherwise.
    It sounds like a great thing, but if free will gives you the power to decide you will sin no more, then why has it worked not a single time in human history save Jesus Christ?

    • @gwkdad
      @gwkdad 4 года назад +6

      You do error, not understanding the scriptures. Free will never gives power, rather it allows you to choose to serve God. It is the power of God that enables one to live a life above sin IF you have the spirit of God abiding IN you. Even then you have the free will to choose to follow Christ or yield to temptation and slide back into a sinful way of life. And who are you to judge that everyone has failed other than Jesus Christ? That is totally without merit, and you can't possiby expect anyone to buy into such a rediculous statement.

      "Just the fact that God foreknows everything negates the idea of free will."
      I appreciate your comments, but there seems to be a bit of an issue here in the quoted statement. In fact, it is a non-sequitur.
      If you were to say "God knows what is going to happen and tweaks with people's actions to achieve the desired outcome" then I might agree that Free Will has been negated, but just knowing the outcome of an event doesn't mean the participants in the event didn't make the choices, freely, that led to the outcome that God has previously seem.

      We could also be born directly into abuse and while young, have not had the chance to have a concept of sin.
