I did add a magnet to my economy disc cutter punches, and sat them on top of my other cutter to use in the press. Kind of a pain, but still doable. That 1.25 disc really does take a 2lb brass hammer to get through it too..
Have you ever tried a mechanical arbour press ? What were they thinking of when they designed those cheap, fixed gap cutters ? Excellent idea about using yhe shim stock. The new Pepetools disc cutter looks beautiful. A bloke could go mad shopping at Gesswein !
Jester Mclarpet I do have an arbor press. I am not strong enough to get them to go through the metal. At least not the thicker gauges that I use. I have tried a couple of times. The new cutter from Pepetools is beautiful. I love it. And yes, you could go mad shopping at Gesswein.
Maria Paray Yes, I believe so. You should be able to cut up to about 18 gauge with a hammer. Anything thicker than that is best used with a hydraulic press.
Can you tell me a bit about the JT-SP310 Locking Disc Cutter. It looks very similar to the Swanstrom but I can not determine if the punches are angled as you suggest or flat.
Thank you so much for this very clear explanation of the difference between these cutters
Excellent video! Really helped me to make a decision on which to buy. THANKS!
BTW For me, it's the Pepe Tools kit :)
Excellent review! Thank you so much for the upload. Glad this was the first disc cutter review I watched
Ben Salisbury thank you. I hope it was helpful.

Melissa, great video - would you need shims for ANY gauge sheet? I cut discs from 18-24 Ga and sometimes lighter yet. Thanks in advance!
It would be helpful to have links to the various disc cutters.
You rocked this vid .. thank you ..

***** I think they suggest that you go no higher than 18 gauge stainless with a hydraulic press. So I don't know that I would attempt 14 gauge.
Thanks
Want to know what the differences are between some of the disc cutters available? Well, check out my latest video.
Hello
I need to cut circular aluminum button 2mm thick by 45mm diameter but concave
Melissa, do the better cutters all have the same gauge range, when using the brass hammer?
Maria Paray Yes, I believe so. You should be able to cut up to about 18 gauge with a hammer. Anything thicker than that is best used with a hydraulic press.
Melissa Muir Thank you!
I bought the cheap one; the bouncing was crazy and it marred the metal beyond belief!
The cheap ones are AWFUL. I had the same experience.
deadblow hammer

+Caleb Martin I am afraid I have not had any experience with those. My favorite is still the Pepe disc cutter.
Excellent review
Thank you.
