  • In this interview with Dale Dye, we cover what led him to the Marine Corps, how he initially was a grunt working with 81mm mortars before Vietnam, how he became a Combat Correspondent and attached to the 1st Marine Division, meeting Steve Bernston, a mutual friend to both Dale and I, as well as Dale's mentor in country. We both share stories and comments on Steve, but then Dale comments on other characters within the ISO of the 1st MarDiv, such as Earl Gerheim and Gustav Hasford. Dale's story then covers combat inside Hue City, the challenges he faced inside Hue, and the overall tactics used in the house-to-house fighting that he witnessed and participated in inside the city. We cover the writings used in Sea Tiger, the USMC newspaper published in country during the war, as well as stories published by Steven Bernston and the impact Steve has had on Dale, they are lifelong friends. We end the interview with the impact Dale has had on Hollywood with films like Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and the upcoming Masters of the Air series premiering in late January.

Thank you for a most interesting interview with the great soldier, author, historian, and, yes, even actor, Captain Dale Dye. He has the gift like the wonderful Civil War historian Shelby Foote to spin a yarn. Thank you again.

I totally agree! So many unique time frames and units to focus on as well, especially with the 5th Marines units in 1967-1968.

That documentary Brothers in War is the closest I can think of.
