In the event of a school lockdown most schools do not have the facility to lock a classroom door from inside the room. Typically, in an emergency situation, the teacher has to find their keys, go into the hall and lock the door, putting themselves and their students at risk of exposure, then come back into the room and shut the door locking themselves in. At the same time they have to get their students into a safe location in the room and cover any windows. This a lot of time and is potentially dangerous.
School Safe minimizes the risk of exposure by allowing the door to be closed and locked at all times while still allowing ingress and egress without the need of a key. I remember watching this back in elementary school when I was afraid and obsessed with fire drills and lockdowns. Gave me chills everytime. Watching this now, I think we need these now more than ever.
When I was in 6th grade, we had a lockdown, and me and my friend went to the bathroom before, and had NO clue that there was even a lockdown, so we just stood in the bathroom. Thank goodness it was just a drill

Step 1: Lock your doors at all times
Step 2: Close your door and Window blinds
Step 3: Turn your light off in your classroom
Step 4: Pray XD
Step 5: there's no step 5 lol

Thats what we do here at my school only lock the doors when we come back from the restroom or recess

my school's doors have locks that you turn on the inside, but you need a key to open it from the outside.

In most schools, large and small, lockdowns occur many times during a school year. Gladly most of them are not serious. Although they cause disruptions and concern.

Thank you for your information. There are many ways to secure a campus. Some of which is teacher and staff training on what to look for with troubled students, make it more difficult for anyone to enter the building, secure classrooms easier, communication and coordination with police and fire departments, communication on the playgrounds and athletic fields and lots more. As long as the problem is being addresses more seriously at all schools that is a great first step to a safer campus.

In Buckingham, England when school lockdown happened the siren was so scary... you have no idea! But we just turned the lights, computers, projectors and blinds and sat in our seats like normal because our french teacher knew it was just a practice. It was kind of awesome if you know that it as only a practice to make us safe.

One of these went off today. It was a false alarm, but considering the events on Friday, everyone was freaking out. I don't think I'll ever forget this, but my Chemistry teacher locked the doors, shut off the lights, and told us where the hydrochloric acid & potassium were. I've never seen that side of her before.

At my school you're supposed to go to your next period classroom, but I think that's stupid as if there's a imminent threat, you waste time checking your timetable and potentially going across the whole school, which is a huge risk.

School Safe is also great for a fire drill. In a fire drill for my school, we all line up quickly and go outside. My school doesn't have School Safe, unfortunately, but it's still really great for it. :)

Thank you for your comment. Of course an all electronic tag, access, etc... is much better for schools. BUT not every school can afford that technology. Our School Safe device is very inexpensive and most schools can afford to have them on all doors. Then as budgets allow more elaborate systems can be installed.

Thank you for your comments and questions. Each school district has it's own steps to follow. This school wanted students to be moved to a location where they could not be seen from windows or doors.
I used to do Lockdown Drills at my school!
A magnetic strip placed across the latch plate on the door frame allows the door to close and seal against the frame. This is very critical for fire related issues to prevent smoke from entering a classroom should there be a fire elsewhere thus reducing smoke damage. Teachers should always close the classroom door when exiting the building during a fire drill. for lockdown drill, simply remove the magnet. The latch is not a bad idea.
It's so sad that we have to take such precaution 20 years ago we didn't have to do this
In my school district all the schools have doors that lock from the outside when they're closed and to open them from the outside the teacher needs a special card all the teachers have. It can open from the inside of a classroom. The 1 downside is you need to knock on the door if you're late.

The School Safe device does effect the latching and locking of the door. Once the door is closed using School Safe you can still open it from the inside the same as usual.
A school door is supposed to be able to be opened from the inside with one hand movement, by turning the handle or pushing a lever handle downward. Therefore we did not change anything to do with the door latching device.
