I think it would be great if you would tear down retro basketball shoes more often so that younger audiences can get a glimpse of what basketball shoes of the past bring to the table in terms of technology and performance, which is way different compared to other basketball shoes of today.
Really like this type of review. The nostalgia with older hoop shoes really makes zero sense from a performance standpoint, modern shoes are the best it’s ever been

@@KiddAlways yes the AJ11 was in fact a full length air bladder I stand corrected.
However the the torsional plate with forefoot wings was carbon and inspired by football cleats. The lead designer for Air Jordan's III through XV, XX, and XX3. -Tinker Hatfield.
Before I bought my 2016 retro, watched quite a few reviews, knowing it heel slips, went 1/2 size down. Forefoot and mid foot lockdown is fantastic. It's just the heel. Once I have gone 1/2 size down, I punched extra holes behind the last shoe lace hole for extra lock down, worked fantastically. I used a wood carving knife and carved out more groves on the outsole, much better. Zach, if you are going to review the penny 2, you MUST go half size down. even that might not stop the heel slip. I had to add heel paddings and 2 layers of socks to get the penny 2 go.
It’s so funny. Had these in 1995 and had no heel slippage. Have them again in 2023. Tons of heel slippage. Crazy.
Cool video. I would've went with the Air Max Penny II. Those have similar cushion setup, but have a massive carbon fiber shank. Plus a very supportive upper, and a more versatile outsole. Those I think are still (even though heavy and not breathable) performance beasts.

Great video, doc. Ive a pair of retro Penny 1's and 2's. I dusted off and played in the Penny 2's a few weeks ago and changed to the Lebron 20's after a game and half and felt the world of difference traction and impact protection/cushion wise, two-factors I look for, as a 39yo, when buying shoes. Penny's my all time fav player but his first 2 signatures are no good to play indoors with today. The 4's and the 5's though.... 🕺🏽👍🏽

Absolutely love your reviews. I had the og Orlando colour-way back in the day and loved playing in them, until one of the rear air max units popped on a landing (I'm only 5'10" and was about 73kg's, so no idea why they popped. Not a hard landing at all!!). Anyway I was gutted because I loved playing in these. Thankfully Nike sent me the Penny 2's as a replacement pair - can't wait for that review!! Thank you for covering these kicks!

No surprise really that new tech is better than old tech.
As someone who plays primarily outdoor, the Penny 1 would have been one of my all time favorite shoes to hoop in (yes, even compared to some of my favorites in the KT7 and Curry 1), if it wasn’t for the heel slippage. Great lifestyle shoe today, and would have been still an ok to great performer if the heel counter had some sculpting to prevent heel slippage. The Penny 2 however, are a different story. Those I think hold up well today in terms of performance, especially since the heel slippage issue has been solved in those.

I think its interesting the lacing of penny 1 and harden 7 is a bit similar but the lockdown is totally different
Really cool shoe, but that heel lockdown is awful. The 2s were a massive upgrade in terms of fit.

I’ve been playing in the retro 7s and 12s and I put the move game day insoles in and they honestly feel like slightly heavy Nike bball shoes. Most of the retros (to me) start to burn your feet after about the 45 minute mark of playing bball. They’re Perfect for the men’s league games with running clocks 👟

Hey Zach i know you're a foot doctor, could the instability in the back of the shoe played a part in Penny's knee problems? I find I can feel similar instability in my LeBron Nxxt Gen's & stopping suddenly makes my heel wobble & I can feel my knee straining outwards. Love ya work by the way.
If the shoe is unstable in the rear foot your body will have to make it up somehow - so yeah it could contribute but was it significant enough to make an impact- who knows

Air Max Penny 1 has always had a weird fit and 1/2 size down is usually the safest bet for narrow and medium footers.

11s are full-length air, 13s are Individual Zoom units, and Foams are full-length Zoom with double stacked in the heel.

Got these because they were sold out of the penny 2 in my size. They feel good but the ankle/Achilles padding is hard to get used to. The right shoe is fine but the left in my pair digs into the middle part of my achilles and make them hard to wear. Shelf warriors....
Maybe the heel slippage attributed to Penny’s knee injuries. I never liked Penny’s because of how chunky they felt on foot & the poor lockdown.

While these are the closest to the original AM Penny, they aren’t close at all. The last retro Penny 1 that was made like the originals was the 2005 releases, and the midsoles and air unit were on another level, MUCH SOFTER.
I don’t know if that’s a good thing though…
The Penny 2s are SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 1s in every single way.

The insole is the midsole so not much to have to take apart. Honestly the shoe is so “open” (with the slits in the midsole, etc) that it really doesn’t hide much lol

Those shoes in the "Original"/"Orlando" colors have always been my favorite shoes of all time! even today!!... I have always wanted a pair since they came out in 95-96' when i was in middle school... An here now a days their almost a rarity to even find, & when you do find them its with a hefty price tag, like who can afford that??? Then i come across this video where you cut them up like that?? smh... There are people out here who can only dream of having & wearing the type of shoes your destroying, just so you can tell us how comfortable you think they are!?!?... wth man... this just made me sick.

So while I UNDERSTAND what your trying to portray or put forward here about Older Shoes vs Newer Models BUUUUUT these are “Technically” a NEW-er MODEL shoe! They were are/Released in 2022/2023 and they are made different then they were back when they Originally came out. The materials are Cheaper, the Design has been slightly changed as well (especially to fit new parameters and materials) so it’s basically a NEW Sneaker with an “Old School” feel! But it’s DEFINITELY NOT Vintage or even OG!! 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ less talking in Circles and trying to convince others and just be straight up! Sorry not meant to hate or anything, I support your channel and enjoy your videos etc etc but this Video just struck a cord with me lol 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🫠🫠🫠🫠
