Honestly kataras motherly nature is most likely a coping mechanism since her mother was taken from her as a kid and so she tries to project how her mother would have been onto others to try and feel that connection it may be a bit naive to help every single person in the world because you have a good heart but I think kataras motivation is admirable and sweet

I agree with you about Katara. Yet I didn’t dislike her because of it. She was a child. She thought like a child. She can’t see the macro level because she hasn’t lived long enough. She frustrated me a lot, but I never became angry. I had the desire to sit and talk with her. That is what the last airbender always got right. They were children who behaved like children.

Ultimately, though, I feel like Katara intervening with the earthbender prisoners was ultimately for the greater good despite the risks. Yes, the prisoners could have waited out the war. But Aang winning the war was only a glimmer of hope, not a guaranteed thing.
There’s also the fact that the prisoners were being mistreated and would have surely died anyway due to malnutrition and illness. Also assuming that the Fire Nation wouldn’t just kill them off anyway before the war ended. The prisoners were trapped in a sense of learned helplessness. While on that ship, where they were ripped away from their natural element, they were beaten down so badly that they couldn’t see that they had a way out the whole time. When you’re stuck in that kind of mentality you NEED someone to show you that you actually can make it out of the situation you’re in. If Katara didn’t help the prisoners and instead let them wait out the war, they still would have been mentally trapped and still in a bad place.

Yeah, I think how much a person likes Katara ultimately comes down to whether you can forgive her stubbornness and the admittedly well intentioned, but also short-sighted, poor decisions that stubbornness causes. I mean, her choosing to help a relatively small number of people that were suffering, while coming from a good place, has endangered her and the rest of the gang multiple times. Unlike Doorags, I do actually like her because I like the other aspects of her personality enough that I can overlook this part of her, but I can definitely understand why he doesn't. Especially when I remember the water bending scroll.

I typically prefer Katara when she's doing what all good medics do and supporting the team. It comes off as way less preachy when it's the people who are actually in her life that she's helping. As for exceptions, I really love her episodes in Season 3, specifically The Puppetmaster and The Southern Raiders, though I do kinda wish she actually followed through on killing the guy and only then realized her mistake. I think it would've been interesting to see how the weight of that would affect her rather than just having her do the boringly perfect right thing and avoid the issue.

Honestly i like katara as a character because she comes off as a realistic teenage girl dealing with trauma. She doesn’t know everything & have all the answers, and she makes mistakes. When sokka & aang do the same people praise the realistic writing, & aang often has far worse reasons for endangering everyone (usually he just wants to have fun or show off & it goes wrong). I dont dislike aang or sokka for these reasons either, because again theyre kids & they dont necessarily know better yet. If they had all the answers already theyd be boring characters. I feel like the same consideration should be extended to katara

I have a strong feeling this rant will come in full force when we get to Painted Lady
The biggest problem with the Katara Centered episodes like this is that it's supposed to create conflict within the watcher, where your torn between the Logical bigger Picture: The war Vs. the Emotions of the viewer by making them believe that the only way to stop this Suffering is for the Gaang to Directly intervene. And the intended conflict within the viewer is supposed to be reflected in the arguments between Sokka and Katara. But that's my personal read on these as I do empathize more with Katara in these situation despite logically agreeing with Sokka.

I personally think that it was important for Katara to keep pushing the Earthbenders. They feel defeated, and lost everything but their lives. To wait out a war that spanned a Century with no forseable end to it is just waiting an eternity to die. It does impede on Team Avatar's plan, but they always put their plans on hold for what they deme is the immediate priority. So if I was in Katar's shoes I'd probably feel defeated and give up. But she persists. Giving them the tools they need to be the masters of their destiny and proving to the prisoners and the fire nation that the Avatar lives and he's here to help you.

If I was to make a practical argument for Katara's intervention in this episode, I'd say it's a pretty common thing for nations on the losing side of a war to kill all their prisoners near the end.

      @davidtucker9498 2 года назад +1

No, that is NOT a common thing! Germany, and especially Japan, inn WW2 are barbaric exceptions to the rule, because both nations were completely entrenched in genocidal ideology. It was so shocking to the Germans that when Hitler sent the order to kill all POWs at the end of the war, the Wehrmacht soldiers refused to do.
There was no such resistance in Japan, however... In fact, Japan, expecting a land invasion, has written orders to execute all POWs, and were set to do so just DAYS after they were forced to surrender due to the atomic bombs.
Around 123,000 people were saved directly by bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, over half the number killed by them, to say nothing of the millions who would have died in a land invasion of Japan.

It's tough to say i dislike Katara, or really any character in this show, but i do disagree with some of things she does. This episode is essentially an example of guerilla warfare. I think, in the end, it's better that she took back this town from the fire nation. It is a war and controlling territory is kind of the point, as is the control of supply chains. Which were disrupted due to the events in this episode, as this village was a source of coal which the fire nation needed to run all their most powerful equipment.

  • @MaggieCandy999
    @MaggieCandy999 2 года назад +5

While Katara is my favorite character on the show I TOTALLY respect your opinion regarding her, and I can understand on some scale why you feel the way you do about her. It’s basically the way I feel about Hermione Granger from Harry Potter.
Much like Katara, Hermione is someone who is always taking care of the boys in her group albeit in a more academic and practical sense than a motherly one. When she’s introduced to the plight of the House Elves in book 4 (actually the plight of one House Elf) she takes it upon herself to be the savior of all House Elves everywhere and forms a club dedicated to setting this ‘slave race’ free from the masters they work for, completely disregarding their feelings on that matter.
The difference I feel in the two is that Katara genuinely cares for the Earthbenders and wants to free them because she knows that, even though they say they want to wait out the war, they really don’t like their current predicament and would much rather go home to their loved ones and practice their bending in peace. The only thing holding them back was their own fear and the fact they felt they were cut off from their own element, at least until the coal was introduced.
Hermione on the other hand not only doesn’t understand the House Elves, but doesn’t even bother trying to learn how they feel about their current situation. Even when they say they don’t want to be free and reject the clothes she makes them she instead chalks it up to them being brainwashed and not knowing any other way to live, and needing someone like her to show them a better way. She says she’s doing it because she cares, but it comes off as very superficial and as a way of proving she’s right about something. In the end it just seems like Hermione is using these poor creatures to prop herself up so she could look virtuous in front of the others.
Katara on the other hand never came across as someone who wanted to prop up her own virtue, but wanting to help for the sake of wanting to help. Maybe she came off too strong for you, and I don’t blame you for thinking that, but for me I think she hit a pretty good balance of being assertive but also caring and understanding. Something Hermione failed to do.

I still love this show and think it’s great, but I do think that one of the times it dropped the ball was when Katara told her brother that he didn’t love her mother the way she did, and we never saw her apologize for it afterwards. Often times we say things we don’t mean when we’re overly emotional, and even in her anger I could hear her pain and drive to want to find her mother’s killer, so hearing her say those hurtful words didn’t make me dislike her, but I do think that the creators should’ve shown Katara apologizing to Sokka along with forgiving Zuko, and I can understand how anyone can potentially feel a disconnect with her afterwards. Other than that, I still personally think she’s a wonderful, and well written character.

I'm glad for the primer on the Katara rant, 'cause I'll be looking forward to it and I suspect I'll be nodding along to most of it xD
    *spoilers*
The most insufferable manifestation of her caring too much on a micro level (that I can remember off the top of my head anyway) is when she tries to save the river village from the polluting factory in season 3 by pretending to be the Water Spirit, literally poisoning Apa to ground Team Avatar and potentially messing with the timing of the invasion. When she's caught and called out on it she says "I will not turn my back on people who need me!". It was really irritating, and my dad (who's a retired commander in the Navy and taught Military and Strategic studies at the Air Force Academy) put it best by retorting something along the lines of "you'll never win the war that way".
Even more annoyingly the show vindicates Katara by ending on a happy note with them cleaning up the river and doesn't how what presumably happens next with the military-industrial complex just repairing the factory, putting the village back to square 1 or the soldiers coming back with more goons.

I mean, ember Island players makes fun of season 1 Katara and even Sokka has that optimist/liar comment.
She is optimistic basically to a fault because she becomes argumentative with people who disagree with her. Because she’s a kid as everyone is pointing out. She has this very naive look of hope which stretches from season one till I would say the Desert. I know it comes back in the Painted Lady but her character is nurturing. That’s just how she is BUT even in the Painted Lady the lesson is if life sucks then do something and don’t wait for someone to take care of you.
What I love about her is when her ideals are tested. Mainly by Toph but aside from that the two big ones are the Desert and of course Southern Raiders. The Desert, yeah, she’s optimistic but her optimism and drive is what gets the group through the desert. Even then! Just look at how she treats Aang during his Avatar state break down. In the Southern Air Temple she pleads with him and tries to reason with him. In the Desert she just simply embraces Aang. No words. She just lets him feel his pain as she hugs him. That scene still gets me every time. Knowing how to help others deal with emotions is a mark of emotional maturity.
We then see the opposite side of it in Southern Raiders when she faces her own trauma. She goes through her stages of grief but in the end she comes to realize that killing the one that killed her mother won’t give her closure. It’s almost like her nurturing nature was a mask that hid her grief. In the end though what happens? She accepts her anger, lets it go, and then goes back to nurturing but this time with a more realistic mindset. She forgives Zuko and moves on. I will say it till I am blue in the face. This is what makes ATLA such a well written show. The characters evolve over the show. They have good qualities and bad. As the show progresses each character faces their bad qualities in unique ways and each time they become wiser because of it. THIS is what maturity is.

1:53 - 3:42 I can understand why there's a dislike for Katara. I mean, yes, risking the lives of the Earthbenders to form a rebellion that could eventually help take down the Fire Nation is reckless and obstinate, but agree to disagree, I feel there's a difference between surviving and just waiting to die. It does seem a good idea to wait out the war, but burying your head in the sand and just wishing things will get better won't make change happen; there's no guarantee the war would end without a revolution or rebellion to help put an end to certain suffering, and even without one, the Earthbenders don't have a particular timeline of how long they have on that boat before they either die from the workload, poor conditions, or even if the Fire Nation grows tired of them and just decides to kill them. If there is no action taken, or risk of losing something in a fighting for what you believe in, then eventually you become complicit and compliant to the imposing regime or system. If you stand by and watch others who do stand up against totalitarian or dictatorship forces perish, then I feel you've lost the war. And that's something that I feel can apply to nowadays. Again, that's just how I feel; agree to disagree. I am aware that revolutions or rebellions throughout history have not resulted in positive outcomes, if not ever. There have been casualties on a grand scale that come from risking lives to obtain the greater good, and like waiting around, there's no guarantee that things would make a difference. But the risk is far better than the alternative, and that's what I kind of admire about Katara from this. Yes, her character does start out a bit annoying with how demanding her beliefs can be, but she isn't blind to what can be lost from fighting back, and you do start to see her point of view later on in how she relates to her mother's resolve to keep her and the village safe with risking her own life. Later on in Southern Raiders, when Zuko offers Katara the chance for revenge against the man who murdered her mother, you could make the same argument made here that she was risking Aang and her friends lives by infiltrating Fire Nation territory for her own quest for vengeance. However, Katara is aware of what the cost would be, not only for the group, but for herself, and that's why she showed restraint and left the man responsible to wallow in his pathetic existence he already had. Katara didn't have to forgive what he took from her, but she didn't go too far in what she believed. There are limits to how far a character can go for their beliefs, but to turn your back completely on doing what you believe can make a difference isn't helping anyone to survive in my opinion. Still, great video, @Shady, and great discussion about what's talked about in this episode.

Final Fantasy XIV actually tells a similar story in the Doma section of Stormblood, but tells it better. Katara wanted to start a rebellion, but went about it the wrong way. She didn't exactly set an example for people to follow. in FFXIV, Yugiri plays a very similar role. Yugiri, a skilled and experienced ninja, is an adopted daughter of Doma and she believes in the cause to overthrow the rule of the Garlean Empire. In particular she believes in the cause of Doma's young lord. The young lord promised to fight for the people if the people desired freedom. But if his countrymen no longer want liberty, he would give the Empire his head to spare them further pain. "My blade, or my head."
Sometime earlier, the main characters orchestrated an attack on a village some miles away that forced the imperial viceroy to run to safety. The viceroy is a terribly cruel and sadistic woman, and so orders a reprisal on the village Yugiri is currently located at. Yugiri had tried to recruit the villagers to the resistance, but the villagers are so terrified of the viceroy that they shrink from her. It doesn't matter; the Imperial soldiers conscript the villagers and imprison them. Enraged and knowing that the villagers will die in servitude if not be executed outright, Yugiri springs them all from captivity and drugs the entire garrison as cover. But the freed villagers shrink from her, still terrified of the Empire and what it might do to their families. Heartbroken, Yugiri tells them to return home and do what they must, but she vows to see them freed for good. In a heartfelt conversation with the Player Character she reveals that she feels like she's failed them.
Then an opportunity falls into her lap. They spot a Royal Imperial airship flying into Doma. They learn from their sources in the palace that it's the Garlean Empire's crown prince who has arrived. The prince, who is also the general in charge of the military force, was ordered by the Emperor to inspect the province as there were reported problems there. Yugiri, desperate to save Doma's Young Lord from sacrificing himself, decides to gamble and attempt to assassinate him. Now, the Crown Prince is a certified badass. Earlier in the story, he fought the Player Character in single combat and crushed them completely. The player character who, by this point in the story, has killed more than a dozen demigods, two other Imperial generals, and a king of dragons so hellbent on revenge against humans that he poured his entire soul into the battle. So Yugiri decides to put all of her abilities as a ninja into practice and kill him by ambush. The player character, unwilling to let her face this alone, plots with her. A young man they've tried to recruit and who was freed from the prison overhears this, and contemplates turning them in to the imperials.
The Player Character and Yugiri launch their attack. They manage to incapacitate several of his guards, but fail to even damage the Prince. The player character and Yugiri are both defeated, but before he can kill Yugiri, someone attacks him. The young man had rounded up an armed gang. Yugiri begs them to flee, but the young man answers with an absolutely amazing speech.
"We're not going anywhere, do you hear me!? We're not running away! What you're doing is stupid and reckless, and I never wanted any part of it, but here we are!" A pause. "I've spent my whole life hating myself - for every time they made me beg, for every time I held my tongue, to protect the people I love. And then you came along and reminded me of all the things I never said and never did, and it was even worse! I would have given everything to forget, to walk away, but I knew I'd never be able to live with the guilt. So we came. All of us! For you, for ourselves, and for Doma!"
With the arrival of the Player Character's friends, everyone is able to flee from the Prince who otherwise would have massacred the entire lot. They don't accomplish their mission, but Yugiri did gain something: A brand new, committed force willing to fight to the last against the Empire. And it meant that now, they could find the Young Lord and begin the rebellion in earnest.

I do like Katara, but I also agree with your points regarding her flaws. Though she is considered the “mom” of the group, she’s still only 14 (if I remember correctly). Haru’s dad wanting to wait out the war wasn’t a bad idea, especially because there were so many lives on the line. But Katara is too young and hot-blooded to fully respect his wishes.
Also, I actually never understood the Katara X Haru ship. Like you said, he’s really not that interesting on his own.

Ok, ok, I see what's happening here
You're face to face with greatness, and it's strange
You don't even know how you feel
      It's adorable
Well, it's nice to see that humans never change
      Open your eyes, let's begin
Yes, it's really me, it's Maui
      Breathe it in
      I know it's a lot
      The hair, the bod
      When you're staring at a demi-god
What can I say except, "You're welcome"
For the tides, the sun, the sky
      Hey, it's okay, it's okay
      You're welcome
      I'm just an ordinary demi-guy
      Hey
What has two thumbs and pulled up the sky
When you were waddling yea high?
      This guy
      When the nights got cold
Who stole you fire from down below?
      You're lookin' at him, yo
Oh, also I lassoed the sun
      You're welcome
To stretch your days and bring you fun
      Also I harnessed the breeze
      You're welcome
To fill your sails and shake your trees
So what can I say except you're welcome
For the islands I pulled from the sea
There's no need to pray, it's okay
      You're welcome
Ha, I guess it's just my way of being me
      You're welcome
      You're welcome
Well, come to think of it
Kid, honestly I could go on and on
I could explain every natural phenomenon
The tide, the grass, the ground
Oh, that was Maui just messing around
      I killed an eel
      I buried its guts
Sprouted a tree, now you got coconuts
      What's the lesson?
      What is the take-away?
      Don't mess with Maui when he's on a break-away
And the tapestry here on my skin
Is a map of the victories I win
      Look where I've been
      I make everything happen
Look at that mean mini-Maui just tickety-tappin'
(Ha ha ha ha ha ha, hey)
Well, anyway let me say, "You're welcome" (you're welcome)
For the wonderful world you know
      Hey, it's okay, it's okay, you're welcome (you're welcome)
Well, come to think of it, I gotta go (hey)
Hey, it's your day to say, "You're welcome" (you're welcome)
'Cause I'm gonna need that boat
I'm sailing away, away, you're welcome (you're welcome)
'Cause Maui can do anything but float
      You're welcome
      (You're welcome)
      You're welcome
      And thank you

I don't dislike Katara but she did annoy me at several points during the show. I vastly preferred Toph, just for being a more realistic and flawed character, even as a shit mom I still liked Toph better, lol. Katara felt like a Mary Sue in comparison to Toph. Also tbh, although that scene with her and Sokka saying he could only remember Katara's face instead of his mom's... Was kiiiinda sweet, that also kiiiinda ticked me off too? Bc 1, hello Sokka are you not supposed to be the older sibling here? Fkin act like it. And 2, BEING the older sibling, you have no excuse to forget your own mom's face like that if Katara hasn't! Sheesh...

Cathartic to hear you of all people say you dont like Katara. I agree, she's written well, but I also think the story itself doesn't Acknowledge her faults as much as they should because she is clearly the writers favorite. I've always kind of chalked it up to she has the 'female protag can do no wrong' armor growing up, but as an adult it could very easily just be that she IS just the favorite and the story reeeaally wants you to believe that motherly kind nurturer persona even when she contradicts it

I disagree that it was a bad thing to break out the earth benders. In book 3 everyone team avatar has helped on their journey comes back to help them in turn in the invasion & eventually in defeating the fire lord, many of whom wouldnt have been around if the gaang handnt helped them in the first place. It takes a while to pay off yes, but i think the message is worth it

I didn't say it was a bad thing to break out the earth benders, I said that if I were in her situation, I would've cut my losses. I also said that while helping people on a micro level can have macro advantages, I don't give Katara credit for that because that's not why she does it.

  • @christianjohnson5379
    @christianjohnson5379 2 года назад +2

I understand your dislike for Katara...but I wouldn't say this is the real reason I dislike her sometimes. She was right to do what she did in this episode, she inspired Earth benders to rise up and fight against the tyranny of the Fire Nation, she inadvertently helped the Earth Kingdom have the courage to keep fighting.
I think that the reasons I dislike Katara sometimes, and I'm sure you'll cover these in your future episodes, is that she can be dangerously naive, such as what happens when they meet Jet, course she could be manipulated easily. Also she can be a bit of a hypocrite. Also her love life with Aang had a pretty rocky start. We knew throughout the whole series that she had feelings for Aang, yet in Ember Island Players, she proceeds to tell Aang she needs "time", yet she had plenty of time for Jet when they met him.
And let's not get started on the way she treats Sokka when he disagrees with her decision to seek revenge for their mom. In her mind because Sokka didn't desire revenge, that meant only she loved their mom, that was very cruell and vindictive of her.

I can see how Katara has unlikeable qualities. She’s annoying. She even has a moment of reflection when Toph tells her how annoying she is and they butt heads. But she’s also a kid. Kids are annoying and naïve and don’t think critically about potential consequences. Shes a flawed character who grows throughout the show just like everyone else. Her natural will to heal serves a greater purpose in the ATLA universe too. It’s not just a traditionally feminine trait for the sake of writing a feminine character. But I see why she defaults to least likable, especially considering the legendary character arc of Prince Zuko.

  • @NerdilyDone
    @NerdilyDone 2 года назад

I dislike Katara because she's often used by the writers for manipulative sexism against men. Like, when Sokka tells Aang not to respond to the demeaning nickname Toph gave him, Katara makes a sexist comment about Sokka's bag matching his belt. I'm sorry, Katara, why are you defending Toph being disrespectful to Aang? Why are you mad that Sokka doesn't like it? Do all women automatically get the right to insult men and they just have to take it? And who cares if Sokka's belt matches his bag? It's not wrong for men to like to look nice, and given Sokka's personality, it's probably just a coincidence that the items match.
I don't think your reason is all that great a reason to hate her. Sure, it makes sense to disagree with Katara's actions at this point, but to hate her over having logical feelings for someone in her position? I don't know about that.

Honestly, I always saw Katara as the weak point of the team and the show.
Yeah, she suffers "consequences", but usually her friends take care of those consequences, unlike Sokka and Aang, who usually have to solve the problems they produced themselves.
Also, she usually gets a recognition of her being in the right at the end and so doesn't really learn anything, unlike Sokka and Aang, even Toph.
And let's not even mention the terrible romance between her an Aang, which is by far the worst of the show and how it hurts so many episodes because it forces Aang's world to revolve around Katara or Katara interfering in other characters plot.
Her first episode is good, but the more the show goes the more careless and forceful she gets, and never really learns from her mistakes.
Avatar is not a master in my book for many reasons, Katara is one of them.
