I’m still using this lens in 2024 for portrait work on my canon 6D. Colour science & sharpness from the body to the lens is 😍

They made it so sharp that it has stood the test of time . And the bokeh is great.

I have this lens, I have to agree it is fantastic! I think I got off of eBay for about less than $200. I use it on my 5D classic for both macro and portrait work, it never disappoints.

People think they have to have the latest and greatest gear, because they think it makes them a pro photographer. The reality is there are gems like this one that still work quite well.

Love older Canon lenses. Recently sold my a7iii and got a used 5D mkIV and pocketed a little cash. I take photos/video of muscle and exotic cars for sale, and was sick of colour correcting on the Sony. All to say, stumbled upon another gem: 1990's EF 20-35mm 2.8 L for a couple of hundred bucks. It's great! Have my eye on this 100mm macro now. Something fun about going backwards to old tech. Feels vintage now lol

I have to say that Sony's color is less than stellar. That is one thing I miss from the Canon world.

I was looking for this EXACT video since I’m an old canon user and my 100mm usm is my gem I didn’t wanna get rid of , and I badly wanna switch to Sony cos of the quality and 3rd party lens support . Thank you sm , you’re a legend !

So from what I gather its still to this day a viable lens, I've been on the fence between this Canon and the Loawa 100mm 2.8 the price gap is huge the canon I found local for $160 used, the loawa used for 389$ I believe it was on B&H so not to much off msrp. Thank for the info I'm definitely closer to a decision.

What kind of extension tube did you use and would recommend that is of high quality?
And: If I get the R5 with IBS , would I need the Macro 100 mm EF lens with IS? I have the Macro 100 mm EF lens USM but it doesn't have IS on it, mentioned it in my original post.

I am not an R5 expert, but you should be able to use IBIS with this lens. Some cameras, like the Sony, have a manual focal length selector that you use so IBIS knows how to stabilize the shot. When I was using my Canon 7d Mark II with this lens, I used an Opteka extension tube set.

How do you pull back from 1:1 to 1:2? Just move further from the subject?

I recently got this lens at a thrift shop wondering if it would work on my canon t3i.
