When you first posited the theory "MTV teen wolf is more inspired by the cartoon than the original movie" I thought, "Well, it's worthwhile to draw the comparisons but I think they're just coincidence due to making the wolf plots/world building more generic" but I genuinely believe that they had to draw inspiration from the cartoon now. a remake of this movie set in the 2020s would actually be a VERY fun idea. Like, rather than just becoming a locally famous werewolf, Stiles puts Scott playing basketball as a werewolf on TikTok and it goes viral, and he becomes an internet celebrity. I mean, Stiles already has vlogger/influencer vibes, so it wouldn't be a reach.
i have never seen even one episode of teen wolf the show, but i love this silly movie so much. like, kinda obsessed. i've actually been listening to every retrospective and breakdown of the series that i came across, just in the hopes that anyone would talk more in depth about the movie!!! this is very exciting🙏❤️

I grew up with Michael J. Fox as THE Teen Wolf, and to an extent, Jason Bateman as well. Fox has a convincing baby face, and he was 23 when he played Marty McFly the same year.

As far as what happened to Scott's mom, there's a line where the teen bully specifically says that he killed her with a shotgun, and I took this 100% literally when I was a kid, but I guess you could also interpret it as his way of equating Scott to a stray dog or a coyote. Like, "I killed a dog that was stealing chickens. I bet it was your mom!" Then again, his mom IS dead, so I don't know. Also, I saw all three of these on TV when I was a kid, but I think I only watched one or two episodes of the cartoon, for obvious reasons.
Yeah I did notice that line but I guess I assumed it was just teasing- it would be so wild if Mick just casually admitted to murdering Scott's mom and Scott didn't even do anything about it
@@jane-mulcahy That's why Scott always hated Mick and I believe that was his only reason he wanted to get with Pamela to troll Mick and take him off of her, I believe he suppressed seeing him mom killed as a werewolf, and that explains his reaction that his dad knew about it (the werewolf line) and why he gets that upset at Mick slightly admitting to killing Scott's mom Then once he beats up Mick and Scott's dad has a talk to him about revenge (in the deleted scene) he realizes it's a bad omen Once he got his "Arthur taking the sword from the Stone" moment by "slaying the dragon(Mick)" and winning the game without his werewolf powers, he "beat" Mick by embarrassing him and his team he no longer wanted her , walked away when she tried to get with him and went and grabbed Boof and kissed her As a "Teen wolf" diehard (Michael J Fox is my favorite actor tied with Tom Hanks) I thought I was the only one who had that theory..glad it's just not me 😂
Scott's supportive and loving dad is my favorite thing about the first movie. The twist reveal that his dad is a werewolf too and he doesn't have to hide a secret from him is a great subversion of the "supernatural secret" trope
I always think it would have been a great reveal that everyone liked him but they only liked him because they feared him would have been a great twist and made the point of Scott needing to truly be himself hit home
Jeph Loeb wrote the screenplay of the original movie. Some people probably don’t know that name, but he wrote a bunch of 80s action movies, and was in charge of the Marvel tv shows, including Agents of SHIELD (and was also a producer for SMALLVILLE).

ok so this might be random but today i was coming back from a road trip with my family and my dad asked me and my sisters to play songs in the car that were from his "times" aka the 80's and 90's, but they needed to be from our country (brazil). one of the most popular bands of the 80's in brazil was called legião urbana and they had a song called "eu era um lobisomem juvenil", which means "i was a teenage werewolf"; it's like 7 minutes long and has nothing to do with actual werewolves, but my sister loves it. i mentioned i was pretty sure the title was a reference to the movie that originated teen wolf. and now i just arrived home, opened youtube and saw you posted this video!!!!!!1!!1!!! it's a sign!!!!!!!
lol I should listen to that song! there actually was a separate movie called I Was a Teenage Werewolf from all the way back in 1957, so I'd guess the song is referencing that- it's become kind of famous over time not for the content of the movie itself but just for having such an outlandish title. but it definitely did originate the teenage werewolf concept, which probably did directly influence Teen Wolf!

I just checked the Teen Wolf screenplay from October 1984 (which is available online on Script Slug), and I found this character introduction: *RUPERT "STILES" STILINSKY, a frenetic whirlwind of hustle with a too-soon moustache and a T-shirt proclaiming "LIFE SUCKS, THEN YOU DIE".* So the cartoon didn't invent the last name. It just bothered to use it. (A side note: In retrospect, it's no surprise that Scott's dad sounds like Uncle Ben. The co-writer of the movie is Jeph Loeb, who is a well-known comic book writer in addition to all of his Hollywood work. Back in 2002, he wrote Spider-Man: Blue, bringing it all back around.)
@@jane-mulcahy Loeb and his cowriter are credited with writing the 2011 TV show pilot, too. So maybe they finally got fed up with the Stiles surname being confined to the cartoon. (How involved they actually were is unclear. Loeb has said that they didn't really write Teen Wolf Too despite their onscreen credit. They simply gave feedback to the guy who actually wrote it. So who knows how it went with the TV pilot?)

If I may make a suggestion I’d love to see you cover some Australian shows, like Blue Water High. Or even the very strange New Zealand one called The Tribe. Both were major parts of my childhood and adolescence (along with Degrassi)
I knew of the animated series but didn't watch it until like 2021. My dad is a huge Teen Wolf fan so passed the interest to my brother and me. This was awesome!

I love your inexorable advance into the deep lore of the Teen Wolf Cinematic Universe!I kinda expected the next TW video to take a couple of months anyway, because the end installments of the series are... something to be described. If you're taking recommendations about non-struck media to explore, I would recommend SKAM. It's a short Norwegian teen drama that is essentially Scandinavian Degrassi that has since spawned multiple international spinoffs. It's likely you've already heard of it but it might make for a fun diversion until you see fit to return to your Lifetime/Teen Wolf projects. Keep up the good work!
This was a really great video. I had seen the first two Teen Wolf movies, but I never heard about the animated series. Plenty of 80's movies became TV series, so it isn't too strange, but I don't think I ever heard about it before. I remember watching the first Teen Wolf on ABC Family and I thought it was fine. It was a solid rental kind of movie or a movie you watch when nothing else was on. I remember watching at least a bit of Teen Wolf 2. I'm not sure if I finished it or if I was paying much attention to it, but it did feel like a cheap cash-in sequel. The animated series is also a cheap cash-in, but at least it has some of that 80's charm. The ending song with Teen Wolf's Totally Rad is pure 80's cheese and I love it. It's really great that you want to support the writers and actors on strike too. Maybe another look into Bollywood films would work as a future topic. I'll be looking forward to your next video whatever it turns out to be of course.
The open werewolf-ism reminds me a bit of Turning Red, where the main character also is considered much cooler by her school peers as a giant red panda
I think there had to be a modicum of success for these movies because I remember reading a book , couldn’t tell you what, that was referencing stiles from the original movies. Like something about his shirts specifically, i was like oh, must’ve been one of those classic characters before the show made him the tumblr guy
Yeah, I think the thing that makes the movie so memorable is that it's just so blase about him being a werewolf. Everybody finds out and is like, "alright" and the movie just moves along, seemingly more concerned with the high school drama than the fact that Scott is a goddamn werewolf. "Summer of Tears" did a great video that serves as a fantastic companion piece to the movie; it used to be on youtube, not sure why it no longer is (or if so, I can't find it); it's something like 8-12 mins, definitely worth checking out if you can find it.

Re: the criticisms you got on the 1st video. I think some people hear about camp and immediately think it means something sucks? But I think they don't understand camp or how people can genuinely enjoy it FOR being campy. Since camp is an ironic style there's an inherent internal tension that invites the viewer to laugh alongside the show. (And the disappearing camp is a large part of why my enjoyment of the show diminished in season 3.) So they think if you're pointing out the silliness it means you're just a jaded adult being unfair to a teen show. At least that's the way some of the anti-criticism comes off. I was shortly in the TW fandom when season 1-3A aired. I was a young adult at the time, mostly talking about the show with other 20-27 year olds, and the camp was the biggest draw for most of us young queer adults! That and the promise of queer characters which we didn't experience a lot in the teen media when we were growing up. So it was refreshing to have a (seemingly) queer-positive show. Not gonna get into the Teen Choice Awards clip, because I cringe so hard just thinking about it, but some of us got our hopes up that we were finally getting something that had been denied us in our formative years: main characters in a hit show being queer. Anyway. Going back to your first video. For the record, I don't think you were saying that anyone is wrong for enjoying TW. To me the recaps (I watched the show recaps first) had a very light touch in terms of criticism! You mostly pointed out that the show tackled big socially charged topics without making space for the emotional charge that they hold. Which is more than fair! And I really appreciated how you brought up Kali's visual treatment (the bare feet thing) because it was a BIG deal in my adult corner of the fandom. People were angry at Jeff for doing that to the only female character of colour. So yeah, I 100% agree that there's nothing wrong with engaging seriously with unserious media! Otherwise we could never talk about any comedy or kid's show. Which is ridiculous because there's a whole specialization in literature and media that's concerned with how to make good media for kids: how to approach serious topics based on the age group, what language to use, how the brain develops, how to introduce new ideas or words to expand their understanding, etc. Just because those cardboard picture books end up with the corners chewed off by toddlers doesn't mean the entire field shouldn't exist.
Ok, actually commenting on this video now. 😅 I think another way the movie undercuts traditional masculinity is how their team is called the Beavers? Not to be crass, but that had to be deliberate, no? TW the tv show being inspired by the animated series makes so much more sense in retrospect! It also explains why the first 2 seasons were so much more campy and cartoonish. Stiles really feels like he could be a cartoon, but that's in large part to Dylan O'Brien's acting, so maybe that skews my impressions. Given that in an animated morning cartoon the characters don't really change as you pointed out, it might have carried over into Scott's characterization in the MTV show. At least with how he's written in the first 2 seasons. His priorities--to his own detriment, and sometimes with people's lives in the balance--are always Allison and their relationship. That feels a lot more like a cartoon character's 1 defining trait, than it does a teen show's protagonist. You may already know this, but there's another repurposed hearse that chronologically falls right between the TW cartoon and Degrassi's season 10. It's in 6 Feet Under where Claire's family owns and runs a funeral parlour. I think Degrassi's writers were probably more familiar with that show since it was a huge hit. It was written by Alan Ball right after his American Beauty success. (Though it is funnier to think they borrowed it from the TW cartoon).
The best needle drop of the first movie is the "Staying Alive" sound-a-like that plays when Scott is getting ready for the dance. Watched the whole cartoon on PlutoTV, and it looked so gray and faded compared to the remasters.
this was fun to watch. when i was little i really liked the michael j fox movie and was aware of the animated series. it wasn’t until i was in middle school when i had a confusing conversation with a friend that i found out there was an mtv series, and a popular one at that 😭
I am beyond happy to find out about the Teen Wolf animated series and I will absolutely be checking it out. There's something about the silly cheesy camp of this era of cartoons that I have a lot of warm fondness towards and this feels like uncovering some kind of lost treasure.
@@jane-mulcahy It’s a really interesting series. All four are so different in tone and theme that it’s a disjointed viewing experience. My personal favorite is part 4. It’s technically not the best but it has some imagery that is super unsettling and I’ve never seen anyone on RUclips cover it.

You know, when I first watched the Shayna episode 35 (AAAAAAA) Years ago, I genuinely thought Shayna was a werewolf and she was so "closeted" as it were, that she didn't want to admit that to Scott because, well, she doesn't know HE's a werewolf too. It never, ever occurred to me that it could be the other way around. It's the one episode of the series I really remember, because the voice actor playing Scott actually did a good job making Scott sound really desperate and lonely. The only other thing I remember about the animated series was tall the supporting characters were really annoying and Styles was a a straight up jerk. Also no Scott's mom. WHERE'S SCOTT'S MOM? I've been wondering that for 38 years now.
"Wolf of my Dreams" is also the only episode I have a somewhat clear memory of after all these years, and while the show may have left it a little ambiguous, my interpretation has always been that Shayna was implied to be a real werewolf. The biggest hint is when she's leaving the studio for the night (during a full moon) and the security guard notes that she's still wearing her "costume." She claims to be going directly to a party as her "She-Wolf" character, but it sounds like an obvious excuse she's making up on the spot. I rewatched that bit just now to be sure I was remembering correctly.

I watched Wolf Pack (honestly just because I saw Sarah Michelle Gellar was gonna be in it lol) and yeah, it was awful. I wish someone would make a video about it
i think it's a really good point that themes are relevant in any type of media we consume. it makes me think too that probably the majority of media that most people consume is not serious in nature, but clearly people find meaning in it. critically analyzing media that played some role in shaping our perspectives, especially media for youth, who are probably most sensitive to finding themes, should absolutely not be confined to "seriousness"

It has been a number of years since I have seen the 1st Teen Wolf movie. I remember it fondly. I never considered the weaknesses pointed out here. I would have to guess that is due to my age. As a child, these weaknesses still worked for me. I don't remember much about the sequel. Just bits & umages in my memory. I remember I liked it, but I was very young when it came out. I remember Scott's dad dropping Todd off at college. Todd shifting for the 1st time. The Ferris Bueller-like musical number. The final fight. The she-wolf with the tail, & my young mind thinking, "That's hot." I'm weird... Until now I had completely forgotten the animated series existed. Sometimes I forget that there was an animated ALF series too. I do not at all remember what it looked like, & now realy hate that I am now blind. Now that I do remember the show, I am fairly certain I had seen it before the movies. When I later learned the movies were a thing, I was like, "Hell yeah!" The 80s & early 90s were a weird time to be a kid. Wasn't there an unrelated Disney Channel series about a teen werewolf in high school back in the day?

There was a lot of 60's nostalgia in the 80's. Ferris Bueller does the Twist and Shout number; The Wonder Years is set in the 60's; The Monkees had a huge comeback; and all four Beatles had successful albums. Steven King, Tim Burton, and John Hughes works are steeped in it. But, it was a very niche type of nostalgia. It seemed to be the people who were kids in the 60's. The 30somethings had more of the bug. Whereas the 40somethings were more obsessed with the 50's.
I need to know the voice actress for Shayna the She Wolf. She sounds so familiar. Also it's very funny to me that he calls her "another teenage werewolf" when she pretty clearly seems to be an adult.
I highly recommend the video for the Send Me An Angel, which is high 80s drama in the school of Total Eclipse of the Heart (but with no random flying choirboys). Edited to add: I remember something like the earlier version of the video (the 1983 one) actually had a werewolf in it, though it predates Teen Wolf.

a remake of this movie set in the 2020s would actually be a VERY fun idea. Like, rather than just becoming a locally famous werewolf, Stiles puts Scott playing basketball as a werewolf on TikTok and it goes viral, and he becomes an internet celebrity. I mean, Stiles already has vlogger/influencer vibes, so it wouldn't be a reach.
i have never seen even one episode of teen wolf the show, but i love this silly movie so much. like, kinda obsessed. i've actually been listening to every retrospective and breakdown of the series that i came across, just in the hopes that anyone would talk more in depth about the movie!!! this is very exciting🙏❤️

I grew up with Michael J. Fox as THE Teen Wolf, and to an extent, Jason Bateman as well. Fox has a convincing baby face, and he was 23 when he played Marty McFly the same year.

As far as what happened to Scott's mom, there's a line where the teen bully specifically says that he killed her with a shotgun, and I took this 100% literally when I was a kid, but I guess you could also interpret it as his way of equating Scott to a stray dog or a coyote. Like, "I killed a dog that was stealing chickens. I bet it was your mom!" Then again, his mom IS dead, so I don't know.
Also, I saw all three of these on TV when I was a kid, but I think I only watched one or two episodes of the cartoon, for obvious reasons.

That's why Scott always hated Mick and I believe that was his only reason he wanted to get with Pamela to troll Mick and take him off of her, I believe he suppressed seeing him mom killed as a werewolf, and that explains his reaction that his dad knew about it (the werewolf line) and why he gets that upset at Mick slightly admitting to killing Scott's mom
Then once he beats up Mick and Scott's dad has a talk to him about revenge (in the deleted scene) he realizes it's a bad omen
Once he got his "Arthur taking the sword from the Stone" moment by "slaying the dragon(Mick)" and winning the game without his werewolf powers, he "beat" Mick by embarrassing him and his team he no longer wanted her , walked away when she tried to get with him and went and grabbed Boof and kissed her
As a "Teen wolf" diehard (Michael J Fox is my favorite actor tied with Tom Hanks) I thought I was the only one who had that theory..glad it's just not me 😂
Scott's supportive and loving dad is my favorite thing about the first movie. The twist reveal that his dad is a werewolf too and he doesn't have to hide a secret from him is a great subversion of the "supernatural secret" trope
I always think it would have been a great reveal that everyone liked him but they only liked him because they feared him would have been a great twist and made the point of Scott needing to truly be himself hit home

Jeph Loeb wrote the screenplay of the original movie. Some people probably don’t know that name, but he wrote a bunch of 80s action movies, and was in charge of the Marvel tv shows, including Agents of SHIELD (and was also a producer for SMALLVILLE).
He also wrote some Green Lantern stories as well.

i had both of these movies on dvd and watched them constantly as a child and they're genuinely the main reason i even watched the series, and it's crazy to look back on them as an adult through this lens
ok so this might be random but today i was coming back from a road trip with my family and my dad asked me and my sisters to play songs in the car that were from his "times" aka the 80's and 90's, but they needed to be from our country (brazil). one of the most popular bands of the 80's in brazil was called legião urbana and they had a song called "eu era um lobisomem juvenil", which means "i was a teenage werewolf"; it's like 7 minutes long and has nothing to do with actual werewolves, but my sister loves it. i mentioned i was pretty sure the title was a reference to the movie that originated teen wolf. and now i just arrived home, opened youtube and saw you posted this video!!!!!!1!!1!!! it's a sign!!!!!!!
lol I should listen to that song! there actually was a separate movie called I Was a Teenage Werewolf from all the way back in 1957, so I'd guess the song is referencing that- it's become kind of famous over time not for the content of the movie itself but just for having such an outlandish title. but it definitely did originate the teenage werewolf concept, which probably did directly influence Teen Wolf!

I just checked the Teen Wolf screenplay from October 1984 (which is available online on Script Slug), and I found this character introduction:
*RUPERT "STILES" STILINSKY, a frenetic whirlwind of hustle with a too-soon moustache and a T-shirt proclaiming "LIFE SUCKS, THEN YOU DIE".*
So the cartoon didn't invent the last name. It just bothered to use it.
(A side note: In retrospect, it's no surprise that Scott's dad sounds like Uncle Ben. The co-writer of the movie is Jeph Loeb, who is a well-known comic book writer in addition to all of his Hollywood work. Back in 2002, he wrote Spider-Man: Blue, bringing it all back around.)

@@jane-mulcahy Loeb and his cowriter are credited with writing the 2011 TV show pilot, too. So maybe they finally got fed up with the Stiles surname being confined to the cartoon. (How involved they actually were is unclear. Loeb has said that they didn't really write Teen Wolf Too despite their onscreen credit. They simply gave feedback to the guy who actually wrote it. So who knows how it went with the TV pilot?)

I love your inexorable advance into the deep lore of the Teen Wolf Cinematic Universe!I kinda expected the next TW video to take a couple of months anyway, because the end installments of the series are... something to be described. If you're taking recommendations about non-struck media to explore, I would recommend SKAM. It's a short Norwegian teen drama that is essentially Scandinavian Degrassi that has since spawned multiple international spinoffs. It's likely you've already heard of it but it might make for a fun diversion until you see fit to return to your Lifetime/Teen Wolf projects. Keep up the good work!
This was a really great video. I had seen the first two Teen Wolf movies, but I never heard about the animated series. Plenty of 80's movies became TV series, so it isn't too strange, but I don't think I ever heard about it before. I remember watching the first Teen Wolf on ABC Family and I thought it was fine. It was a solid rental kind of movie or a movie you watch when nothing else was on. I remember watching at least a bit of Teen Wolf 2. I'm not sure if I finished it or if I was paying much attention to it, but it did feel like a cheap cash-in sequel. The animated series is also a cheap cash-in, but at least it has some of that 80's charm. The ending song with Teen Wolf's Totally Rad is pure 80's cheese and I love it.
It's really great that you want to support the writers and actors on strike too. Maybe another look into Bollywood films would work as a future topic. I'll be looking forward to your next video whatever it turns out to be of course.
The open werewolf-ism reminds me a bit of Turning Red, where the main character also is considered much cooler by her school peers as a giant red panda
I think there had to be a modicum of success for these movies because I remember reading a book , couldn’t tell you what, that was referencing stiles from the original movies. Like something about his shirts specifically, i was like oh, must’ve been one of those classic characters before the show made him the tumblr guy

Yeah, I think the thing that makes the movie so memorable is that it's just so blase about him being a werewolf. Everybody finds out and is like, "alright" and the movie just moves along, seemingly more concerned with the high school drama than the fact that Scott is a goddamn werewolf.
"Summer of Tears" did a great video that serves as a fantastic companion piece to the movie; it used to be on youtube, not sure why it no longer is (or if so, I can't find it); it's something like 8-12 mins, definitely worth checking out if you can find it.

this is a technical note: words that have “sibilants” or s sounds seem to peak out your mic. consider running your audio through a low pass filter at about 10k Hz to cut out high pitch noise waves. Great vid!

Re: the criticisms you got on the 1st video. I think some people hear about camp and immediately think it means something sucks? But I think they don't understand camp or how people can genuinely enjoy it FOR being campy. Since camp is an ironic style there's an inherent internal tension that invites the viewer to laugh alongside the show. (And the disappearing camp is a large part of why my enjoyment of the show diminished in season 3.) So they think if you're pointing out the silliness it means you're just a jaded adult being unfair to a teen show. At least that's the way some of the anti-criticism comes off.
I was shortly in the TW fandom when season 1-3A aired. I was a young adult at the time, mostly talking about the show with other 20-27 year olds, and the camp was the biggest draw for most of us young queer adults! That and the promise of queer characters which we didn't experience a lot in the teen media when we were growing up. So it was refreshing to have a (seemingly) queer-positive show. Not gonna get into the Teen Choice Awards clip, because I cringe so hard just thinking about it, but some of us got our hopes up that we were finally getting something that had been denied us in our formative years: main characters in a hit show being queer.
Anyway. Going back to your first video. For the record, I don't think you were saying that anyone is wrong for enjoying TW. To me the recaps (I watched the show recaps first) had a very light touch in terms of criticism! You mostly pointed out that the show tackled big socially charged topics without making space for the emotional charge that they hold. Which is more than fair! And I really appreciated how you brought up Kali's visual treatment (the bare feet thing) because it was a BIG deal in my adult corner of the fandom. People were angry at Jeff for doing that to the only female character of colour.
So yeah, I 100% agree that there's nothing wrong with engaging seriously with unserious media! Otherwise we could never talk about any comedy or kid's show. Which is ridiculous because there's a whole specialization in literature and media that's concerned with how to make good media for kids: how to approach serious topics based on the age group, what language to use, how the brain develops, how to introduce new ideas or words to expand their understanding, etc. Just because those cardboard picture books end up with the corners chewed off by toddlers doesn't mean the entire field shouldn't exist.

I think another way the movie undercuts traditional masculinity is how their team is called the Beavers? Not to be crass, but that had to be deliberate, no?
TW the tv show being inspired by the animated series makes so much more sense in retrospect! It also explains why the first 2 seasons were so much more campy and cartoonish. Stiles really feels like he could be a cartoon, but that's in large part to Dylan O'Brien's acting, so maybe that skews my impressions.
Given that in an animated morning cartoon the characters don't really change as you pointed out, it might have carried over into Scott's characterization in the MTV show. At least with how he's written in the first 2 seasons. His priorities--to his own detriment, and sometimes with people's lives in the balance--are always Allison and their relationship. That feels a lot more like a cartoon character's 1 defining trait, than it does a teen show's protagonist.
You may already know this, but there's another repurposed hearse that chronologically falls right between the TW cartoon and Degrassi's season 10. It's in 6 Feet Under where Claire's family owns and runs a funeral parlour. I think Degrassi's writers were probably more familiar with that show since it was a huge hit. It was written by Alan Ball right after his American Beauty success. (Though it is funnier to think they borrowed it from the TW cartoon).

@@jane-mulcahy It’s a really interesting series. All four are so different in tone and theme that it’s a disjointed viewing experience. My personal favorite is part 4. It’s technically not the best but it has some imagery that is super unsettling and I’ve never seen anyone on RUclips cover it.
The only reason i knew of the original movie before the show was because i was on a Michael J. Fox craze after watching Back to the Future for the first time, lol

You know, when I first watched the Shayna episode 35 (AAAAAAA) Years ago, I genuinely thought Shayna was a werewolf and she was so "closeted" as it were, that she didn't want to admit that to Scott because, well, she doesn't know HE's a werewolf too. It never, ever occurred to me that it could be the other way around. It's the one episode of the series I really remember, because the voice actor playing Scott actually did a good job making Scott sound really desperate and lonely. The only other thing I remember about the animated series was tall the supporting characters were really annoying and Styles was a a straight up jerk. Also no Scott's mom. WHERE'S SCOTT'S MOM? I've been wondering that for 38 years now.
"Wolf of my Dreams" is also the only episode I have a somewhat clear memory of after all these years, and while the show may have left it a little ambiguous, my interpretation has always been that Shayna was implied to be a real werewolf. The biggest hint is when she's leaving the studio for the night (during a full moon) and the security guard notes that she's still wearing her "costume." She claims to be going directly to a party as her "She-Wolf" character, but it sounds like an obvious excuse she's making up on the spot. I rewatched that bit just now to be sure I was remembering correctly.

i think it's a really good point that themes are relevant in any type of media we consume. it makes me think too that probably the majority of media that most people consume is not serious in nature, but clearly people find meaning in it. critically analyzing media that played some role in shaping our perspectives, especially media for youth, who are probably most sensitive to finding themes, should absolutely not be confined to "seriousness"

It has been a number of years since I have seen the 1st Teen Wolf movie. I remember it fondly. I never considered the weaknesses pointed out here. I would have to guess that is due to my age. As a child, these weaknesses still worked for me.
I don't remember much about the sequel. Just bits & umages in my memory. I remember I liked it, but I was very young when it came out. I remember Scott's dad dropping Todd off at college. Todd shifting for the 1st time. The Ferris Bueller-like musical number. The final fight. The she-wolf with the tail, & my young mind thinking, "That's hot."

There was a lot of 60's nostalgia in the 80's. Ferris Bueller does the Twist and Shout number; The Wonder Years is set in the 60's; The Monkees had a huge comeback; and all four Beatles had successful albums. Steven King, Tim Burton, and John Hughes works are steeped in it. But, it was a very niche type of nostalgia. It seemed to be the people who were kids in the 60's. The 30somethings had more of the bug. Whereas the 40somethings were more obsessed with the 50's.

I highly recommend the video for the Send Me An Angel, which is high 80s drama in the school of Total Eclipse of the Heart (but with no random flying choirboys). Edited to add: I remember something like the earlier version of the video (the 1983 one) actually had a werewolf in it, though it predates Teen Wolf.
Honestly I think the entire teen wolf fandom would pay good money for the MTV show to have the teen wolf punks out episode. As in, we would all love to see Scott McCall say "it's punk wolf" when someone calls him Scott. We were robbed.
