  • Friends, among the largest problems within the Church today is the massive disaffiliation of our own people, especially the young. In this lecture for the University Series, I reflect on the religiously unaffiliated by answering these three essential questions:
    - Who are the “nones"?
    - Why are they leaving?
    - How do we get them back?

I was brought up catholic but left years ago for some of the reasons Bishop Barron mentioned but especially because I felt spirituality couldn't be found in catholicism. I have stumbled opon many of Bishop Barron's videos, his knowledge of religion, philosophy and his understanding of my generation in regards to religion, spirituality etc. has shed light on misconceptions I had. I have been doing some of my own searching and slowly but surly, I'm coming back by my own choice.

I would also say that Catholic parents need to step up too. One reason I became disaffiliated was because of my parents- they couldn't answer some of my questions and I had one parent become disaffiliated too. I realize not everyone has great, stand-up parents but for those of us who have a relationship with them I wish they did more at the time. This will no doubt become a generational thing in the future- those who are not affiliated will have kids who won't even have the chance to really get involved with the religion in begin with.

Beautiful talk your grace, John Polkinghorne was someone I encountered right at the height of the new atheist evangelisation. He demonstrated to me the synthesis between faith and reason. This exchange inspired me to read theology at university, and now I'm training for the priesthood in the Church of England. Sadly, I have heard that John Polkinghorne has passed away yesterday. His son gifted me with a stole once owned by John Polkinghorne, and I shall wear it for first mass when it comes, God willing. May he rest peace, and rise in glory.

I loved Polkinghorne's work on how science and religion are totally compatible. I referred people to him a lot ! He debated Richard Dawkins once and he was so filled with joy, especially given the juxtaposition of Dawkins, that even before listening to the arguments I feel you were inclined to want to be like Polkinghorne between the two, and then he had the intellectual and logical chops to make the better case. He was a great man. I will add him to my prayers.

Faith and science? Do those two really go together?

    • @PatrickSteil
      @PatrickSteil 2 года назад

@@ding9633 Hello! Hope life finds you well :)
I would say in one respect Faith and Science have different goals.
Science is tasked with answering questions of how things work and what they are made of. Even if we want to go to the big questions - how was the universe made. How did humans come to exist.
Faith on the other hand seeks answers to “why” questions. Why does the universe exist? Why were humans made? Why do I exist? Why is there something rather than nothing?
Although these affairs are different, I would say they depend on each other.
Science proceeds down the road with the assumption that things can be known. That there is an orderly universe with “laws” established about how the universe works. These rules don’t change haphazardly from day to day. It also travels on the assumption that there is something meaningful and good about finding out how things work and how to make life better.
But Faith recognizes the order and organization and predictably of the universe and says why is it so? Why would such a universe exist? Why would all this exist if there wasn’t some purpose? And if there is some purpose and intelligibility, then doesn’t they point to the possibility of something that created it? And if so, do we also recognize other “laws” - not physics and such but natural laws about what it means to be a human with a life. Things like “life is precious and should be protected especially from malevolence. Murder is evil. That evil exists. That people are susceptible to moral corruption. That we do not find meaning and value and purpose from looking within.
Would love to hear your thoughts on these beginning comments.

I must agree with you Bishop, that EXPERIENCING the faith is a very good start - both for passive Catholics as well as those who have left the Church. Getting involved in HELPING others in any way, opens the heart, and then the mind will seek answers. I am a very good example of that, and I was able to understand my faith (grew up in a very passive Catholic home) by practically repeatedly watching almost all WOF videos since way back 2010. Eventually I was drawn to the Eucharist, and can never thank you enough for that. Thank you so much Bishop.

Fantastic episode Bishop Barron, thank you! I'll admit, I'm not the best Catholic. In fact, I suck at it...Lord please don't give up on me! I guess my biggest issue with the church over the years was my conflict not so much with God, but with the man-made institution. I've seen so much anger, hate, ostracism, corruption, and of course, scandal. There were times when certain parishioners would rub me the wrong way with their "holier than thou" attitude, as if they were certain of "guaranteed entrance" into heaven when they die. But, I kept coming back to the church, and still come back because I have no issues with Jesus. Jesus shouldn't have to pay the price for knucklehead humans. If I turn away, then I fail to follow my Lord's commandment to love one another, and I don't want to fail Him anymore.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, please have mercy on me, for I am a sinner.

My husband and I grew up through the 60’s and 70’s when all authority was questioned and cynicism was all the rage and I’ve always felt that that era posed the greatest threat to organized religion. I still feel it very deeply today in that any one who bought in to anti establishment thinking raises an eyebrow when I tell them that I go to Mass every Sunday. I’m an outlier, un-intellectual. 51:15 Bishop Barron, i am a huge fan of your work. You were one of the main forces that drew me back into the church after being a lapsed catholic for almost all my life.
You can substitute the response you give at this time stamp with what peoples concerns are with removing the Tridentine mass. I know people get angry and vitriolic about this topic over RUclips, but the concern comes from a very serious place. One could ask why is Gregorian chant, one of the most beautiful gems of the church, nowhere to be found in the modern church. Most young catholics have never even heard of it.
I understand, and very much agree, the Tridentine mass is not a panacea to fix every problem, but my goodness people are starving for beauty and transcendence, and it has a direct affect on their belief system.
I will follow your work now and always, my first time reading straight through the gospels was with the WoF bible. I don't bring this topic up in anger or an attacking spirit, just one revert who found their way back through you and then through the Tridentine mass.

Thank you Bishop! We shouldn’t always take the poll respondents’ objections or answers as the final word. People will use any argument to keep God at arms’ length, in some cases. Modern people want comfort & safety. The church needs to talk about sin, salvation & reconciliation with God. These are the themes & methodologies used by Jesus.

The whole sex thing does make me less willing to evangelise. At work so many people are living with somone outside of marriage or on a secound/third marriage or in a gay relationship. They, and I, know if they were to accept church teaching in its entirety it would mean giving up the person they love. I am happily celibate but even saying "Would you like to come to mass" to these colleagues would be difficult. It's a huge hurdle they have to jump right from the start.

I grew up Catholic but I wasn’t Cathecised well. Not until my divorce, and my children became adults and left the church did I start searching for answers. My children would ask me questions about the church and I had no answers. So I started praying and asking God to help me. I started listening to EWTN and GRN on the radio. Mother Angelica helped me so much to understand the church. All the hosts on EWTN radio taught me so much and informed me about the church. I went to a retreat at the shrine in Alabama that mother Angelica founded and the priest there were so amazing . This place was a big part of my mind and heart opening up to learning more about being a Catholic. I think if all our priest were like the priest in Alabama shrine our our young would not leave the church.
I think we all need to be accountable as well in wanting to find those answers. Some of us are not ready or willing to say Gods will not my will. I didn’t realize that’s what I was doing when I wanted to do things my way not the churches way. I just thought how can so many people be wrong. I had to look at myself and make choices that were not popular. Thank you Fr Barron. I pray for you and all our priests.

is it only because I am old .... 68, or do others find themselves listening to these lectures, these teachings of the Bishop over and over .... to get it all down. I agree completely, I was for a long time on the school board of one of our local Catholic grade schools, my son went from pre K 3 to 8th grade graduation .... he is now 25 and he graduated with maybe 125 students. It is shocking, shocking shocking to see how many of those young people are totally disconnected completely from the church ... and many from religion. I often think about how to fight back ... and to the best of my knowledge even with the many older nones I know ... MANY .... they did NOT LEARN FAITH .... they do not believe and have never been taught how to believe. They really do not get that knock and the door will be open, seek and ye shall find ... they do not get that really means prayer .... If you want to meet God, if you want to know God ... you gotta talk to God ... period. Word On Fire should I think focus on what we have ... Catholic education ... our kids are gone from my sons generation because as hard as I fought .... it was really barely a Catholic school at least based on the Catholic schools I went to .... of course I was in the 6th grade before had my first and last lay teacher until highschool. Bishop Brown The solution is within the selection of priests, should be quality not quantity. Minimally, they should be friends of our community. You know this first hand father. I am in a poor South American Country and I could see first hand how priests that are simply friends move mountains. Down here we move mountains with details. Father, it is really simple. This is from a "fool for Christ". You are looking at this intellectually, dumbing down, you are reducing this intellectually because you are an intellectual. How about teaching catechism with priests and others who simply love. We don't know our religion. It is not in Aquinas but on who teaches it, who lives it. You are an intellectual who lives your Faith and that is why I love listening to you. Thank you Father.

Yes! Bishop Barron is so sincere and on target in his recommendations. It was the kindness ( charitable attitude) of a white male parishioner and beauty ( incense, etc.) of a Holy Mass at Langley AFB that drew me, a 4 1/2 year Afr American girl to my aunt's religion, Catholicism, at the age of 4 1/2. I was smitten when the male parishioner put a beautiful chrysanthemum on my little dress coat. It was the beauty of the miniature plastic cathedral that my aunt had brought from Spain, where her husband had been stationed. And the lovely mantillas she wore to church. Finally, the children's catechism type books that I obtained from her and started reading at age 8. Charity/ social justice, beauty, and clear, non-diluted, Catholic catechism is what attracts even the very young. And, not the least attractive is the mission to truly evangelize, and not just in CCD and trips to Haiti. No true mission in our community ( outside outside of food pantries, etc.), no true church.

Thanks for this Bishop Barron. I'm a practicing Catholic, but struggling, and I'd be willing to bet the issues I struggle with are not exclusive to me. For me it has to do with the Church's simultaneous rejection of any form of millenarianism and Gnosticism in general, which leaves me in a thought space of just having to adhere to a somewhat blind and hopeless faith in the unknown. I was listening to something by David Bentley Hart talking about how absurd it is that in the west we've somehow managed to turn the gospel into something which promotes the family, private property, and gun ownership. The way he articulated it was pretty deft in my opinion. I have no problem believing the tenants of the faith, but I'm finding myself lost in this disturbing vision of existence as just a machine for producing suffering for souls so that God can have an ever increasing amount of saints in heaven. Last year I went to a talk about Jewish-Catholic relations with Jon Sweeney and his wife who is Jewish, and I asked her about her eschatology. She said her feeling was that the Jewish faith was much more about improving life here on earth and less about the hereafter, which struck me as profound, something I didn't have a response to, and has been something that's been churning in my mind since then. I don't know the answer, but I definitely see the potential for self destruction if we're not carful about how we consider these issues. There's a lot of this "buck up and love God or else you wimp" type of rhetoric, along with a lack of anything being done to help accomplish this feat at all. As a result I spend a lot of time with the saints. I feel strong in my faith, but this is frustrating. Hopefully this makes at least partial sense and doesn't harm anyone. I'd be interested in your thoughts and / or suggestions. Peace and love, grace, and God bless everyone.

The only hope I had for my faith was walking in o. My grandmother in the evening as she was always praying the rosary with her prayer book. It was beautiful and had an impression on me. I asked my mom one day why she never sent us to Catholic school. She told me the nuns would not accommodate my brother who had a physical disability. God gave my brother an incredible level of intelligence at a level I can only consider a gift for what he didn't give him physically. Imagine finding out that it wasn't a matter of her not wanting to raise us Catholic, but that the church didn't care enough to take us. So, for that reason, I felt like my family was not welcome. Eventually, my parents fell away and I fell away. I know I am culturally Catholic, but with such a poor Catechisis in the Diocese of Buffalo and all the horrors coming out of that diocese all the homopredation pushes u even further today. How could a diocese with such beautiful church's turn away from ita traditions as it has, I will never understand. I began going back after my mother died, but after about 6 months, I had to remain home with my ailing g father and them Covid hit. At no time did anyone call to see if I was okay. People having to move around the country to remain employed strips them of family and community. My history is in Buffalo, but I left to take a job closer to my brother who moved to NC. We both live here now and have remained close. I feel a love for the church, but dont feel love back. The wealthy always run the church and their haughtiness pushes many away. This got worse with parish councils. Stop turning the church over to the laity.

Do you know why they left? As a former Christian I left because I came to realise that there is insufficient evidence to justify a belief in any god or gods.
Given the importance of 1 Corinthians 15: 14, I told Bishop Barron that there is no empirical evidence to support the biblical resurrection claim. Barron replied mocking me, implied that I was ignorant and told me to go read a long list of book titles that he gave me. I told him that I didn't need hundreds of books as all I needed was for Barron to give me just a single sentence from all these works that contains just a mustard seed's worth of empirical evidence to support that biblical claim. Bishop Barron stayed as silent as the God that you believe in.
Not mine but "a honest person who realises that they are mistaken is either no longer mistaken or no longer honest". I truly believe that your son's have, like me, chosen honesty.
That must have been difficult for them but in my humble opinion, honesty is something that you should be proud to have taught them.
I will say this in the hope that it helps. If you believe that there is no suffering in heaven and that is where you are destined. Your God must know that you would suffer if your children were in hell, so your God would surely intervene to stop that. Live your life, allow your children and grandson to live theirs and put your trust in your God to make things right.
You could of course set yourself free and become an atheist.

I sent a message to Rome asking: why wouldn't his Holiness, the Pope, doesn't require Cardinals/Arch Bishops/Bishops to organize weekly Church subjects in order to bring Christians back to Church through invitations. In today's internet, it should be a lot easier than before.
The reply U got that his Holiness, the Pope, cannot require the Church leaders to implement his wishes unless the Church leaders Initiate these Church needs.
If we leave a void in the minds of Christians, some organization will rush to occupy it.
Therefore, let us plug these holes without letting the bad slip through the cracks.
Inviting Christians back to Church to discuss beliefs, without getting involved in Politics, is the key to bring Christians back to Church. The Church leaders should be fully capable of answering any faith question, specially in view of the sciences of today.
    Thanks for your Sermon.

So bishop, a cradle Catholic here; whether it be V2 or not it is the leaders of the church that have lost these disaffiliated, but now the same who lost them, now want those are still here to pick up the pieces and get then back. We who have been faithful, we who raise, educate and evangelize our own kids now have to go and educate and evangelize everyone else's. Mother Angelica warned us of church activism and we are accosted by it regularly, to no nauseam.
I think the church needs to rid itself of the leaders who are not evangelizing or teaching from the pulpit. Those who do not live their call. We have a priest here who came into the church late in life but can't give any intelligible reason for suffering in the world. Can't wear his priestly clothing when not on church grounds. It seems he can't wait to get into jeans/t-shirt, is more interested in the music of the mass, /leaving the alter to go play the organ/piano DURING Mass). But we should be concerned about evangelizing? I think the church needs to take the plank out of its own eye first.
I'm sorry Bishop, love you, think you are doing your best but I have real issues with your position here.

One thing for certain I have seen in my own experiences regarding whenever I leave a parish when moving out of town, is that I never get asked why? They just assume I'm going to join another parish. Maybe that's okay, but I never hear, "oh I'm sorry we are loosing you and God Bless you on your journey..." or something to that effect. And conversely, I never seem to get welcomed when I come into a new church community and in fact these days I get more scrutinized..." please provide your birth certificate and the reasons why you want to be in our parish and of course you will be supporting our parish financially..." So the church has got to teach our priests to be more "hospitable" in the least. And for God's sake I'm 61 years old and you need me to send you a birth certifcate? In other words I come to your doorstep and say I'm Catholic isn't good enough for an older "white guy" that's clean shaven, wearing a sport coat, dress shirt, dress pants, and clean shoes, and speaks with respect for your office and ministry... isn't good enough? I cannot even imagine what my parents would think to see how far we've drifted from Reason alone, much more in Faith and Religion.

I do miss the old gone kapoot and I must obey. I miss going to church. I attend church online. Once a month I take a long ride by taxi for communion (Saturdays). It's such a treat for me. God Bless America. Oh boy! you guys need it.

I was confirmed at our lady of the skies as Sebastian in 2004 and I've pretty much spent the next 15 years away from the church; that is right up until about the end of 2021.
Maybe something about my youthful Wonder dissipated and I looked at the world without the lens of Hope with reckless abandon and I realized the wickedness of people and as i really look at it, I realized that certain tribes of people are actually, actively doing everything they can to solicit wickedness within you. When I realized this I was overcome with an emanation from somewhere knowing again that Christ is King of Kings, and these movements that are pushing kids into sin are doing so because they are afraid of Christ.
From about 20 to about 33, those years weren't angry at God I just wasn't respecting the relationship with him, and as I look back I can see almost all of my shame and failures come from that essentialism. "I'll just be here with myself, i don't need god with me, he can worry about the others folks out there I'll be fine." Dumb arrogant bonehead move.
I've been wondering this too, how do you appeal to the youth, how do you make Christ seem cool?
I don't think you're going to like the answer father, but it's honestly so simple. I'll tell you that it has a lot to do with the people in charge of Hollywood, the people in charge of banking and finance, the people in charge of pornography, and the people in charge of lobbyists in DC; all of the people orchestrating a converging divide between people and Christ and every level of society. It's hard to fight an enemy you never name.
What do kids like? Well let's just take a look at what the most popular television series have been for the last 20 years okay? Breaking bad, game of thrones... It's all coherent cogent shock and awe.
It's hard to get people to think an idea is cool if there isn't a lot of passion behind it. We lose kids because we tell them not to like rap music and not to like nudity, not to like degeneracy but we never tell them who are the people who craft these elements, and kids interpret that as you're just old and boring and these things are new and exciting.
If you want kids you need to make lessons exciting.
When you point out how instrumental Israel is in the decline of Western Civilization (kids like it when you tell the truth about something you're not supposed to talk about), that stirs a reaction in young people. Someone just told a naughty truth. That person's interesting.
All of this beating around the bush and tire kicking the degeneracy of society is the impetus for why the youth isn't involved. They're looking for material truth because no one's providing them with a spiritual or cultural one pertinent to their life and their struggles, imho.
Christs interaction with the money changers at the temple is emblematic to what I'm talking about. What a rockstar. Kids love that, maybe what Catholicism needs are more rock stars willing to name degeneracy, the institutions the industries and the tribes of people who are inspiring it. It's uncomfortable but I think you'd be surprised at how badly this conversation needs to be had, and further how it resonates in young people.

Being a catechism teacher. Many places do not have a formal religious education programs any longer. When the children came for their first communion or confirmation classes…they are not prepared in the basic Catholic faith/beliefs. If we don’t keep them in regular classes, we will lose them.
I also feel that the priests should go out to those who are in a struggle, but they don’t. That has always been a disappointment to me. I have seen members in struggles, I have suggested for our priest to go see them but, so far they haven’t. I also feel our priests should be reaching out to those who have left. I have reached out to many of them, but they are waiting for the priest to inquire with them.
When I was young, the priest spent many dinners at our home.
Now our priests are so stretched over so many communities, that even when we have invited our priests and bishop for dinners they have had to cancel for work or emergence’s. I have invited say 5 times and have been able to make once. So, there are a number of concerns for us up in the far North.

I don't think that Barron, will be too keen to be associated with Sheen. I suggest that you read why his beatification has been permanently suspended.

I really agree about the lack of rigor in religious education. When I went to high school (1990s) at a pretty good Catholic high school, honors courses were offered in every subject... except religion. And the religion textbooks were fluffy little things teaching ideas such as "Compassion is caring plus sharing" or asking questions like "The morality of nuclear war: What's your opinion?" (Or even using terminology like "BCE" rather than "BC".) Very strange. I'd love to know the rationale in Catholic education circles for this policy. It would be fabulous (I think) if the many intellectually-compelling religious works could be presented instead.

Robert Barron provides here a thoughtful and candid exposition of the ongoing secular decline in America of affiliation with religion in general and the Catholic church in particular. He gets to the true heart of the matter when he identifies and emphasizes as the overwhelmingly most important reason the simply “ceasing to believe” by many of the supernatural claims that are the key tenets of the Catholic church and its doctrines. He lays out several plausible causes for this, including the greater persuasiveness of explanations offered by the natural sciences and the increasing willingness of the culture to affirm and validate the desire for individual self-determination. There is, however, an additional contributing dynamic that, I believe, Robert Barron overlooked or failed to consider.
In charting the rise of religious disaffiliation in modern America, Robert Barron starts in 1972, a time that he identifies as one when only 3% of those polled identified as religious non-believers or as unaffiliated. As a 17-year-old in 1972, I was one of those 3%. It was quite common back then for non-believers to be told that their failure to believe in supernatural claims reflected an essential immorality, and that they were therefore less worthy as individuals and as members of society. This often led to estrangement from family and social circles begun in childhood. The low regard for the non-believer was widely shared by many of Robert Barron’s institutional counterparts from that generation; sadly, on occasion, these Church authorities of an earlier generation used the prestige of their offices to disparage the character of non-believers in the eyes of their fellow citizens.
Today, thankfully, it is much more widely accepted and recognized that an individual’s moral quality and willingness to contribute meaningfully to humanity does not depend on belief in supernatural claims. Indeed, and to his great credit, Robert Barron has used this very platform, in his capacity as an eloquent and erudite officer of the Catholic church, to make the case that the late Christopher Hitchens - who was an adversary to the end - should be recognized as a profoundly moral individual. In my own immediate experience, I see that even the most religiously devout parents are much less likely today to disown, or become estranged from, their non-believing children than was the case in earlier generations. In short, a maturing young person today, when beginning to have doubts about the supernatural claims heard since childhood, is much less likely to be facing a fear of estrangement or of becoming a member of a despised minority. Surely, this also contributes to the evolving dynamic that Robert Barron so capably presented in the first third of the video.
