How come you’re using screws instead of nails for the blocking ?
In the states were supposed to use nails because of sheer strength
Tony, every thought and method you have says "quality, quality, quality". It's so commendable. It's brilliant.
Hi Popandu thanks for your kind words, there so many amazing trades people within the U.K. and world wide have a awesome week all the best Tony 👍

Hi Ben thanks for your kind words all the best Tony 👍
It's very rare finding builders who do a job properly. That's why it's such a surprise when you do see builder's who give a fuck and take pride in work
Tony is a great teacher explains everything so well
That is a great job well done. Impressed with using the T&G board in the storage area and also the way you mitered the board around the ties . Good to see Ollie back as well.
Hi Ian much appreciated it’s always great to save money for the clients when also it’s not really required in certain areas, it is good to have Ollie doing some filming all the best Tony 👍

Learnt something today. Much respect to good trades men.
First class as always gents, tradesmen at the top of the game, as a joiner myself its people like Tony I look upto, a master of his craft
Hi JWB Joinery thanks for your kind words, there are so many great trades people out there based in the U.K. it has some of the best in the world but we need more money pumping in by the government, they need to pay the lectures a lot more money and allow them to set the syllabus well that’s my view have a awesome week all the best Tony 👍
You nailed it!

Hey Rob much appreciated it’s a beautiful building next one out very soon all the best Tony 👍
Great work and tips from tony old school tradesman a delight to see
Great video as always guys🤩 Floor looks amazing and certainly not going anywhere👊Makes the that reclaimed floor more authentic with the odd half crown banged into it😎
Hi Del much appreciated hope you are well all the best Tony 👍
Pure belt and braces on that floor, that's craftsmanship. We used to call them rose bud's, an old wet rag and a steam iron plus a quick sand with some 100g wet and dry paper. Job done 👍 🔨 🇮🇪
Beautiful job 👍
Really enjoyed this video. Learnt so much.
First class floor that is, no twisted joists in the years to come, no creaking either.
sweet work, thanks for the video
The more storage space you have, the more crap you store and I speak from experience. I love to see dedicated trades men do a fantastic job.
Great vid! Love the tips, top job guys
Hi Stevie thanks for your kind words all the best Tony 👍
great instruction and content
Quality work..Thanks
Great tip about adding loads of noggins. No doubt that’s why my new build squeaks like me knees! Will fix that when i add new carpet in the bedrooms.
You’ll need to add some screws to your floor when you take the carpet up to eliminate the squeak . New build carpenters would’ve nailed the chipboard down
Hi Paul love extra nogging and it’s true about the screws great shout be careful on pipes and cables thou all the best Tony 👍
Can never have too many noggins..
Absolutely beautiful and filled with so many builders tips!!! 🙌🏻
Hi Tony much appreciated glad you enjoyed the video and tips all the best Tony 👍
You could also use floorboard clamps to tighten it up which will allow for shrinkage of the timber.
Reisser screws are the best!!!
The screws you like at 5:20 - are they Reisser R2 Cutter? If so what size do you use, 5x100? Just adding a load of noggins for my bathroom job and need some decent screws for it. Great work on this job btw!!
Hi Carlos rissers or spax or Vottex at 5x90 or 100
Any reason why the noggins weren't staggered? It looks great but I thought they should never line up.
Dead right - in my day with 2nd fix it was simple, my boss paid me well above the odds but deducted (20p for each hammer head mark).
You learn to be efficient and accurate very quickly.
Great video guy's-Love the content.
Was always advised to use screws instead of nails to prevent squeaks. But I guess if the floorboards will be exposed then nails will look better. Also shouldn't there be a slight gap between the floorboards, say about 1mm, as the slight play and friction between the boards can also cause squeaks when walking on them....
This is so helpful, thank you. If you have a suspended floor with joist hangers and it is creaking - what can you do to stop the creaking? Thanks
Lovely traditional methods there chaps , I’m sure I recognise that house 🤨🤔😉🧱👍🏼
Hi Guys 😂 I’am sure I seen you guys there awesome to have you with us all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE 😁😉🧱👍🏽
That is one solid looking floor that won't be going anywhere soon! Why were you routing out a notch out at 1.48 on the video, was it to keep it level over the centre wall? 👍👍👍
Hi Kevin much appreciated absolutely spot on cracking spot all the best Tony 👍
Hi guys great channel and great work. Can you do a video on the structural integrity of screws over nails, there seems to be more and more people using screws for structural purposes and I was always taught to use nails as they don’t snap in sheer situations unlike screws. You could use your clout to talk to the manufacturers of straps hangers etc. just an idea
Hi mate. Whats the best floor boards to use if covering with carpet etc. Redwood? Softwood? Thanks in advance
Hi Tony, brilliant video thank you! Can I ask is there a difference between the two varieties of cut clasp nails available? There’s an “L” shaped nail and then a “T” variation with a kind of nipple on the end. What do you go for? Thanks!
Hi Kieran much appreciated T shape has a stronger hold than the L but L is still has an incredible hold but both are really good have a cracking week all the best Tony 👍
Brilliant thanks for the reply Tony! Have a good one.
I've tried cheap squeeze clamps. Shite. Squeeze to hard and the bloody handles snap. Irwin you can squeeze as much as you like.
What screws are you using to put them straps in to what looks like stone
Have you tried ForgeFast screws? "Apparently" they're drive in really nicely and are reasonably priced! ;-)
Great video chaps. That's a seriously burly floor - and some amazing quality wood. I picked up some 4.2m 4x2s for a lighter job yesterday; from my trusted timber merchants... and the quality was shite... And... over £20 a length!!
Looks great. I always thought you were meant to leave a 1-2mm gap between floor boards to allow for expansion?
Hi Wayne it’s a new one on me but each to there own all the best Tony 👍
Hey Tony great job, quick question I have plans for my attic conversion which has suspended joist and it has an oxter detail (never heard of it except boats), drawing shows joists suspended from 2 parallel steels with cullen straps.....have you ever came across this before as it seems over kill rather than just use hangers....it also looks like the straps wrap up over and down both sides of joist (upside down U if you like)....just curious to see what you know about this detail (Scotland)
Hi PH DIY
The detail that we have done so many times.
Purchase extra long leg jiffy hangers make Simpson.
Make sure the steel is 1/2 higher than the top of the ceiling joist then bolt timber into web and on top of steel and hang long leg hanger
In and wrap on top but all of this will need to be confirmed by your structural engineer.
We always use 70mm c24 floor joist with 70 hangers better job all the best Tony 👍
Another fantastic video. Can I ask where the boards came from? Or any suggestions for suppliers?
Hi Alex of course Coventry Reclaimed and Warwickshire Reclaimed but definitely try Carwardens Reclaimed all the best Tony 👍
What have you wrapped the floor joist end in ? And why ?
Thank you
Loft 👍
Love those nails.
Unless you ever want to lift a board!
@@mikiex very true, but still look the part.
Hi Peter they are definitely a must, there not to bad to extract using a nail extractor anything else give up 😂 all the best Tony 👍
A cut clasp above the rest.
Brilliant tips Tony. Quick question I'm 18 in my final year of secondary school, would you recommend going into the trades Carpentry or advise against. Would love to hear your views and anyone else's I've been told several times by Carpenters and joiners to not go in to it and also by teachers. Love the videos 👍
Hi Mark thanks for your kind words. Mark I believe in living my life in following my dreams, I have always advocated this to my family and I would say the same to you be the lion, I have to disagree with the others, especially the teachers which should be encouraging you. What I can tell you it is very well paid and only going to increase because of a massive shortage of good labour, wages at the moment 50k plus I know guys who are on 75k at the moment. What ever trade you go into make sure you love it with a passion it will shine through. Joinery shops do not pay as much as being out on site but it’s we’re I started to learn my craft I was staining windows solid for six months be patient I lot of youngsters are not because they want it all now and it doesn’t work that way choose a great bloke to work with or company, do your home work research them ask lots of questions, a great example look what Ed did to work with Robin Clevett I commend people like Ed. Any way got to go and earn a crust I wish you all the best in your future plans and you can always DM on Instagram if you need any advice from an old git 😂 all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE Thank you Tony very much and I love the advice I really really appreciate it and your time. 👍
Good ,but why not use herringbone struts !!!
Why this joists are so smooth and square? Do you use planner? 🤔
Hi Dan it’s the way they are sold in the U.K. all the best Tony 👍
What do you use them clamps for
Hi Adam two inch joists all the best Tony 👍
Is this part of an insurance claim? Or just a full renovation?
P.s nice work! Real builders still exist 🤜
Unfortunately we had to stop filming
great video but why not screw the floor down ??
Hi Antony not on my watch 😂 only on chipboard flooring all the best Tony 👍
Dear Tony. Can you fix it for me to be on your team.
Thanks
Fred. Age 52.
Hi Freddie what’s your trade or are you starting a new all the best Tony 👍
9:17 why use nails for flooring? There's a reason the world has moved on from using nails on floors: it's to stop squeaking. Screws stop floorboards from squeaking over time and allow you to easily lift up the boards for services if required.
I don’t think you understand the purpose of the video? It’s a Victorian house restoration restoring its old beauty and craftsmanship. It’s how it was done back then and it would look rubbish to screw the reclaimed boards.
Hi AJ I think Leo hits the nail on the head all the best Tony 👍
@@leoanderson6862 LOL. They used metal straps to hold down the joists yet used nails for the floorboards. If you're picking and choosing what victorian methods to uphold during the restoration, it makes little sense to use nails on floorboards that will be coverered with carpet, LVT or laminate. Victorian restoration is about keeping those high celings, mouldings and other decorative woodwork... not using nails for floorboards LOL.
Hi AJ the metal straps that you are talking about are not holding anything up they are triangulating the roof, this has been specified by the engineer because of dropping the joist line which you can clearly see,
As for Lino, Carpet etc etc this will not be the case it’s going to be sanded and then polished as are a lot of old reclaimed floors are of today. It should be noted AJ that all the old coving and architraves and skirting are matched. I’am not to sure if you are in the trade but you will know or not know these are certain methods that can be applied in this detail to achieve a beautiful result all the best Tony 👍
Bloody brilliant. Your team is constantly getting bigger. How many staff do you guys have? Room for one more? 👀😂👍🏻🧱
Hi Ben much appreciated never say never, I think there’s about 20 now plus office staff but we try and only do two jobs at a time, but we are doing a very small 3rd job which broke out into a big job, I think I got sucked in 😂 all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE oh I know the feeling. Always happy to receive more work from the customer especially in these uncertain times. If you guys are ever down Hampshire/ Southampton I’d happily jump on board. Be an absolute please to learn from you guys. 👍🏻👍🏻
