    I feel like i'm the only person who ever wants to know "why" when someone presents how something is done, and i get disappointed when its not there. Was sad when he said, "Hydrogen Peroxide helps to speed up the germination process--" but wasn't followed up with a "why/how" or what it does exactly. Information like that allows you to decide necessity, or just how things work in general. There has to be a reason to the ratio. How much is too much? What does it do to the seeds? Like what if the only reason its there is because it makes the paper-towel sparkly white. How are we supposed to know.
    Does anyone happen to know WHY/HOW this "helps with the germination process"? What happens.

    • @ram5ramen582
      @ram5ramen582 6 лет назад +17

      Hollis Blackwood it helps germination because it prevents fungus which slows down the germination or kills the seed. But hydrogen peroxide is not necessary for the seeds. I just use regular clean water.

    Dont fold the paper towel over the seeds. Use another paper towel. This makes it easier to peel it back to get to the seeds when they sprout. Also, use a sandwich container with a lid instead of a bag. Makes access all so much easier and the risk of injuring a taproot is lessened.

    Can’t you just plant the paper towel in the soil when you see the seeds sprouting?

    • @2triangles
      @2triangles 3 года назад +1

      Yes, but you’d want to take the top off so they can grow up without hindrance. If multiple seeds, though, you won’t have enough space between the plants for each to grow fully.

    unfortunately I don't always have a luck to plant it's all because the soil I got all plants won't grow, only weeds or else I have to do some special treatment. But I have plants in pots with miracle grow and potting soil. I am thinking to give up planting because not all my plants won't grow even with stuff I put it, it's hopeless. But you tips giving me a hope to plant again :-) in this way I can transfer it to the pots and I will have plants again... thank you. By the way, why it needs peroxide? is it necessary? anyway thank you, Sir!

    • @mygardenchannel
      @mygardenchannel  8 лет назад +1

      not everything needs the Hydrogen Peroxide...it just helps germination. Its just an additive to help promote a seed to sprout. Soil can be tricky, we still have issues with certain plants and getting the soil piece just right. We have been growing plants for 20 years now...it takes some TLC sometimes. Happy Gardening!!

      Low strength peroxide is a pretty effective fungicide, and fungi are among the main killers of germinating seed.

    • @johnthompson3226
      @johnthompson3226 7 лет назад +1

      If you're wanting to use bleach (and be sure to water it down heavily) as a fungicide, it'll certainly do the job. What harmful effect it has on the germinating seed I don't know. Maybe you could trial it on a few seeds to find out.
      I'm using some percarbonate myself on some bean seeds I'm germinating right now, which I understand produces peroxide when dissolved in water, and then breaks down into washing soda solution. I have percarbonate on hand because I make home brew, and it's commonly used for sterilising equipment, and doesn't need to be washed off afterward, because it has no ill effect on brewing beer. (I use diluted bleach on my homebrewing equipment to do a thorough sterilising job, and then use percarbonate solution afterward to rinse the bleach off).

    I was cutting up a chilli 🌶 from the supermarket it had loads of seeds so I thought I would have a go at this method, I just used ordinary water 💦 and to my total amazement it worked, mine had no sunlight because I put them in the airing cupboard, you don’t need any fancy equipment just a paper towel, water, seeds (obviously) and a zip lock bag, cheap as chips and very efficient. 😀 oh by the way it took about a week!

    • @mygardenchannel

      +Chris Davies I agree, that is why you have something called "Natural Selection" However, we are trying to avoid natural selection by getting all of our seeds to germinate. • @GhostyOcean
      @GhostyOcean 6 лет назад +2

      @@tokerjonezin5205 no it doesn't. 2H2O2->2H2O+O2, basic chemistry. It is an oxidizer and helps kill off harmful contaminates like fungi and bacteria, just like it does when applied topically onto wounds. Of course the reaction with other molecules is going to be different and more complicated, but saying that a compound make of purely hydrogen and oxygen produces a compound with carbon is absurd and ignorant.

      @@mygardenchannel Wow, you just open my mind about all those plants we buy at Walmart mass-produced; I always wondered why they do not last that long. Possibly because they do the same thing. One RUclipsr called the Walmart plants Drug Addicts. Because it is true. Lol. Keeping them alive would feed them all this stuff to keep fungus from attacking it because the plant itself can not defend itself. Natural selection. I have two Herb plants that have survived for 4 years now out of the 16 I have bought from a store that was on sale. The rest died. Thanks for clarifying the process. Will these seedlings that become plants become strong and defend themselves from the elements without my intervention?
