It’s funny how improvement works when you are practicing, I don’t remember when I learned how to identify good times to push, but I remember being punished and thinking what I could do better in each engagement. Eventually certain things went from consciously doing it to unconsciously doing it. It’s wild how things become second nature with enough practice

Here is a tip for many players, even in S+. Total range and effective range are completely different. For example, aerospray has about on line of range in the training room, but it's effective range is almost half of that. The further you are, the more the shots spread out, so sometimes getting a bit closer, even if you can technically hit someone, is better than just shooting and hoping it hits.

I'm always feeling like I should try to remain active in fights if I can, that my time is better spent applying pressure or engaging opponents (I only really back up much if I'm the only one alive on the team) or that at worst I can lay down some turf... but is that mindset a trap? Maybe it has to do with the weapon choice, but you wait things out frequently, I'm noticing and clearly you're making it work, so there must be something to it. I often worry that I'm wasting time if I hang back that much, that I'm not contributing.
Like at around the 10 minute mark, knowing me I'd probably move to the forward edge of the platform (I typically favour backliner weapons), because I feel like I should have sight on the opposing team and I may be able to aid the push if I do. But I also know from experience that this can get me downed much more easily if I ever get blindsided by anything, or they might break out a Tri-Zooka or a Charger could get at me. I probably get punished for this more than necessary...
To use this example, on the one hand, your team is kind of fighting a 3v4 here. But on the other hand, if someone does try to flank there, you're in position to catch them with initiative, so I guess it's more about holding down that space, yeah?

I do my best to back up my team with chip damage or ground ink around the enemy to herd them into their fire. However, my teammates never consider to back me up, or playing defense till more teammates arrive. They seem to rather rush in repeatedly to 1v3 and die which leaves the rest of the team short when it becomes a 3v4.

Edit: so the first 17 battles of S rank went like i described but i lost EVERY SINGLE battle afterwards with 3 exceptions. ( i have played like 40 battles total in S rank) i have no clue what happened. i am now less than 100 points in S rank and i lose every single battle, im checking the replays and im playing the exact same way in the 17 battles at the begginning 85% of which i won. guess im going back to A+ in 5 more losses. my best guess is either that i got REALLY lucky with teammates during those battles or the second guess, in which i think the ELO system from Splatoon 2 was carried over, and by winning too much i got it too high and now im battling against players 834738 times better than me and the few battles i did win i am carried by teammates without realising

I've even seen my teammates jump to other teammates who engaged in a fight (therefore making the jump dangerous), while there's a beacon 1.5 seconds away thats tucked away in a safe corner 🤔 Or when my teammates go down, and I place some beacons next to my tacticooler thats in a safe spot, my teammates often swim to mid or just jump to me instead :(
