Crazy in cinema is cool. Hannibal Lecter, the Joker, John Doe, Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler... all writers want to write characters like these. The problem is that most writers don't know how insanity actually works. It's not a binary thing where one bad thing happens to a character and then they do crazy things, like Kang in Ant-Man Quantumania. So today, let's learn a couple key things about writing insanity by looking at one of the greatest and most authentic cinematic crazies of them all: Annie Wilkes.

Castle Rock: Season 2 (2019)
In Season 2, a feud between warring clans comes to a boil when budding psychopath Annie Wilkes (Lizzy Caplan), Stephen King's nurse from hell, gets waylaid in Castle Rock. Stream new episodes of Castle Rock every Wednesday only on hulu. A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock. Castle Rock is an original suspense/thriller - a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories. - Кино

I made made this vid a while back but didn't find a good time to upload. Let me know what you think. And of course, I'll end 2023 with a Pirates video.
These new types of videos are really nice
@@abdulazizmerdad4093Eyyyy its the traffic light Man! Glad you could be here to do some bully Maguire 🚦
@@abdulazizmerdad4093 Thanks. Great to hear from a legend in the Filmento lore
l really enjoyed this video, the show is mid but the character is S tier in my opinion. l really hope you cover more shows in the future.
@@FilmentoPlease do Over The Hedge.
Crazy is hard to write because real crazy often isn't a logical or meaningful process. To make a character, the progress has to flow from something the audience will see as authentic.
Madness always has a method but not necessarily to the one witnessing it.
In my opinion, it's easy to write insanity. You just have to give the audience valid and logical explanations for why they're acting the way they do, which sounds ironic cause it is. "Real crazy" isn't just randomness; it always stems from something and has a reason for it. Then again, maybe it's easy to me because I've never been sane.
Crazy often is quite logical in a sense. It's just that perception of reality is warped. Like, someone that's crazy and dependent on someone else might see that someone else show a hint of affection to someone else, and the crazy person start to spiral into thoughts about how they're not loved anymore, losing the other person, ending up alone, etc. Often times it's rational thought a different lens.
The difficulty is providing conflicting perspectives without contradiction.
You have to show the "crazy" perspective make sense and you have to show a "normal" perspective that also makes sense, and both have to look believable.
I love how Steven King basically made a cinematic universe and hoped we wouldn't notice
xD
But we did
Those of us who have been reading Stephen King books since forever have known that they all pretty much take place in a shared universe. 😆
Tell me you didn't read The Dark Tower without telling me...
That series literally is the SKU.
Which is best way to create a universe. That way everyone is invested by time they realize it.
"There is no Joy...now there is only MISERY".
This was incredible, is this backstory canon?
No it's more of an alternate universe sort of deal.
Both stories are brilliant in their own way though.
As a work of fiction, canon is whatever you want it to be. Just don’t try to force anyone else to accept your canon as the writers canon.
@lionheart4424
No. It takes place in modern day, as opposed to the 70s/80s like the original.
Is Joy dead?
I love the directors choice to switch up the editing style and also how its about a character from a show. I hope this film is successful enough to produce more sequels.
I haven’t watched “Castle Rock” but cause Lizzy Caplan (Inside Job, Mean Girls, Cloverfield) is one of my favourite actresses, I’ll give it to try.
Bill Skarsgard is in the first season. Would recommend.
She’s really good 👍🏼
Currently watching a video about the mew "Godzilla Minus One" Movie and thought: "Hm... I could really use a Filmento video now."
2 Minutes later I check my phone and well... here we are.
I'll have to check that movie out still
@@Filmentoplease do, can’t wait for you to make a video on my favorite movie from this year
@@Filmento Me too, so far I've only heard good things about it, so I'm very excited.
Holy mackerel. What a beautifully created character. Horror perfectly earned is the most disturbing. And what a incredible backstory to a character we thought we knew. Kudos to the writer.
This reminds me of the time my favorite movie RUclipsr Cinemento went crazy and was replaced by an AI WatchMojo voice
Literally I want every movie ever to be analyzed by filmento. Flops and successes. Thanksgiving. The Little Mermaid. Wonka. Saw X. Talk to Me. So many films that I crave filmento’s input.
Damn. Coming from a divided household with constant manipulation on both sides, this is 100% an accurate portrayal of a character who loses the battle against their mental health. Thanks so much for giving some insight into this character, despite the show being mediocre!
I must say I really enjoyed this video. I binge watch most of your videos because I've only recently discovered this channel but I love all your videos. This one though is a little different because it not only covered something different. ( a show I was unaware even existed.) But also it was a deep dive into a character I know from both written and visual media: Annie. And it got me interested in checking the show out now. Great video all around. Hopefully you do more of these. Thanks!
Goddang, they really struck gold writing Annie’s backstory, it’s a shame the whole show wasn’t just a limited series about her, what a masterclass in writing insanity
The first season of Castle Rock was really good. The second season also exists.
I never got into the second season. I love the first season though.
Literally this. Season one is great, and then season two is a show.
I missed this type of videos u used to make on your channel. So glad u are doing them again
Love character deep dives like this, feel like a lot of people could use this. Thank you.
She doesn't have anything bipolar. Bipolar people oscillate between states of deep depression and overstimulated dangerously optimistic (wasting large sums of money, becoming nymphomaniac for that time...), usually going from one to the other extreme for weeks and then going to the opposite extreme...
She looks more like a Borderline Personality Disorder, that makes the person to have hyperbolic reactions and feelings that are excessive in comparison to what caused them.... 🤔
In the book it appeared she had bipolar as she did have bouts of depression and bipolar isn't as simple as you portray it though you aren't wrong. It could be cyclothymia, which is less severe and debilitating. Which lasts a lesser amount of time. Then again it probably isn't the only thing she has considering all the trauma and betrayals she went through also affecting her psyche as well as her upbringing. So diagnosing would be very difficult as it would be a giant umbrella
There's multiple types of bipolar the large massive swings are typical of bipolar 1 but there's also bipolar 2. Bipolar with psychotic features, cyclothymia, dysthymia etc. That's not even getting into complex PTSD etc which can present similar symptoms.
The book Annie is explicitly bipolar. Castle rock's Annie not as much..
Despite rage, or a temper, not being a symptom of any form of bipolar disorder, lazy writers persist in using rage to indicate bipolar disorder. Rage, or a temper, does not indicate "bipolar tendencies" (whatever that means). No other symptoms are mentioned. Annie Wilkes is isolated and separated from society, and contact with other people is like an anchor for remaining attached to reality
Didn’t watch the show but got chills from you explaining her character
Jesus Christ this is some good fucking writing
i`ve watched the series, I do not remember much of it, but for sure I remember Annie. She was my fav character. Something about her body language and face expresions stuck with me. I would rewatch just for her.
I loved her character, and the actress was phenomenal in the role. She made her descent into madness so believeable and at times I was even rooting for her lol
Wow I really liked everything in this video, glad I could watch a 22 minute video 1 minute after its uploaded
Thanks! And thanks for watching!

@@Filmento no rush ofc :]
You only THINK you watched it 1 minute after it was uploaded. If you watched this video one minute after it was uploaded, you would quickly have left it. Because it would have been posted at 360p resolution. It would've been like watching it through the bottom of a beer bottle, while you were actually drunk.
Instead, you watched it after his scheduled release.
@@danielduncan6806 Oh, and you were expecting prince charming?
I really enjoyed this deep dive into a character's brain. It really reminds me that characters are based off of people and should often be treated as such. Thank you for this video and I would like to see more like it.
Please do Godzilla Minus One. While watching the film, I had your voiceover in my mind on how the story, characters, music all supported the impact of the scene.
Lizzie Caplan is also amazing in Cobweb next to Anthony Starr who also plays a complex psychopath in The Boys. Its a movie that is carried by both these actors even when its premise falls flat.
I mainly know her from Now You See Me 2, so it’s freaky seeing her play a psychotic character.
jesus what an amazing story
just sitting here listening to you recount it has me hooked
Amazing video, as always.
Yo @Filmento, you are really knowledgable on creative writing and cinematography. I am curious do you have any work you have created out for the public?
You are looking at it, fool.
He has a filmwriting book
Great analysis video, I haven't seen this show but now I want to. This character is far more interesting than what mainstream Hollywood has to offer. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻
This is a great character breakdown. Crazy and madness is rationally irrational.
Most writer forget that and just make character that do irrational because they haha koo koo. Start to dig deeper on a crazy character and find the logic behind their mad mind.
Please make a video on the perfection that is Godzilla Minus One.
Ok, I now realize I shouldn't have watched this before going to bed 😱
I hadn't even heard of Castle Rock. Looks really good
I remember seeing Misery as a kid and it traumatized me, I didn't even know there was a show about Annie and I am glad you talked about it, one of your best video so far
You finally got me to subscribe with this one Mr. Mento. Your insight and articulation is superb. Also, I mean this in the most complimentary way but you’re calming voice, not to be confused with boring, has helped me fall asleep many times lol. Keep on keepin’ on homie!
Dang, I lied to you* Mr. Filmento, forgive me. I was already subscribed lol
@@Pmer038Forget Castle Rock, let's see how ur insanity progresses 😂
Lizzy Caplan was amazing. For as much as I loved her on castle rock, I'm ashamed I haven't watched Fatal Attraction, yet.
So glad you made a video about Castle Rock. love the first season and getting your insight on any of these characters is a treat. Great video Filmento.
"She's a stick of dynamite inside of a birthday cake," well that's going in my notebook.
I think this might be my fav filmento yet. Outstanding.
This is a great, comprehesnible breakdown! I think this format, something about the pacing and content of this video, is awesome.
Also, trying to write crazy characters myself, I got a lot of great insight out of this. Keep it up!
I gave a real big side-eye initially....but caplan killed it!😅
Your insight in character writing is the real gold underneath man
This was a great video. I love your other videos but this one was exceptional. In fact, I think i feel an obsession coming on!
By far one of your best videos!
Man this channel is my new YT obsession binge. I just came across this channel a few days ago, I love the narrating and effort to help others creative writing like the movies he reviews. Each upload from them gets better and better.
Great video Filmento!

I really liked the character analysis filmento! Def not too boring.
Nice to see you trying something new this time around! I've always appreciated your analysis when it comes to screenwriting, and this seems like another good facet of that. I also really appreciate you choosing a case study that hasn't been beaten to death, like Heath Ledger's Joker or Anton Chigurh, who's still veryyyy much worthy of analyzing.
another perfect video. thank you so much, Filmento! Happy holidays! (And the piano version of "Where´s my mind" was nice touch)
man, your sponsor message actually got a chuckle out of me. great stuff!
Damn Filmento. We needed that intermission😅. I was so invested in the story. Well done on the video 👏👏 God bless, man.
Did watch till the end. It was one of Filmento’s most insightful commentaries/analysis.
I watched the video all the way till the end & it was perfect

Awesome breakdown. I was riveted !
I’ve watched it til the end, and it’s fantastic.
I watched this series and really enjoyed it. This reminded me how good it was
Very insightful, thank you!
Just watching this made the show interesting, like even I had a flicker of doubt after she saved her and acted like she couldn't remember what happened before. But even after I was shocked.
It's great someone appreciates Caplan's great performance here.
Nicely done Phil.
I LOVE LIzzy Caplan. Watching the clips in this video she sounds so much like Kathy Bates, it's crazy. She is an amazing actress!
looooved the new style of video
One of your best videos 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
And by the way #Filmento, I watched all the video, it wasn't boring.
This is one of the best introductions to a character I've ever seen.
This is perfect.
Another top notch video. What a treat to see a spotlight on what is right in the industry from what feels like a sea of gray mush.
i really liked this breakdown mr mentos
I watched till the end! It was great! Wasn’t boring at all!
Great video, the breakdown of developing insanity is brilliant. I've always said that the best villains are the ones who you can identify with even if you don't agree with them, because in their minds they are not villains.
Making insanity make sense is tougher, but you've done a great job of showing how.
This is a great breakdown on writing a crazy character.
Brilliantly done.
Great video!
Great commentary. And very helpful to writers.
I swear this channel puts me on some shows that are either the best or mid but after watching this character analysis Im intrigue to watch this tv-show now.
this is an insanely good video.
Filmento, you are the best.
OMG I LITERALLY DROPPED A TRAILER ABOUT AN INSANITY SHORT FILM...... PERFECT TIMING.....you are seriously shaping me up to become a great filmmaker
Slowly but surely
One of your best.

This deep dive was perfect
Thank You for the Video 😀
Thanks Filmento. You gave me an idea for making my D&D villain Strahd von Zarovich. According to the book his obsession could only make sense if he's insane in some way, so I will adjusts the key points from this very nice video to make Strahd memorable.

Your analysis of Annie Wilkes in Castle Rock is both accurate and spot on
That was such a great video. Annie seems like such a creepy character but in a really interesting way. I will definitely watch this show.

Dis I watch until the end despite the length? Of course.
The deep looks will always be good when you take something that was average and you rescue its best aspects as vital writing/directing skills.
