  • BikeReview.com.au has had a long term test 2017 Yamaha MT-07 Tracer (Tracer 700) LAMS, for most of the year, with the bike impressing as a high specification learner legal (in Australia) offering, which is also a capable all rounder and fun everyday ride.
With exceptional overall performance, handling and brakes, ergonomics, which while taller and sports touring orientated, can be a little intimidating for a totally new rider, it's a package which has plenty to offer for experienced riders.
We've fitted an Akrapovic Carbon Fibre Race Line exhaust from Yamaha, DNA Performance airfilter and Stage 2 Airbox lid, Promoto Oggy Knobbs and engine protector, Gilles Tooling billet levers from Yamaha, and billet oil filler cap, as well as Yamaha's Comfort Seat.
You can read all about it at BikeReview.com.au.

I bought mine in 2019 when dealers were desperate to get rid of stock, for a very good price. I negotiated for a heated comfort seat (which I love, the heater reduces bum pain so I can ride for another hour or two) and the taller optional screen (which is still a little short for my 5' 10'' frame). I love the bike overall, but the throttle stop was replaced with the less restrictive option after 2 weeks. I thought it was dangerous to restrict the top end power when you're trying to overtake as safely as possible, and the country NSW roads I was using it on left a lot to be desired for overtaking places.
Since then I've added a few other farkles, like a cover for the throttle stop and a baseplate for the kickstand went on there pretty soon after purchase, but it's mostly standard. It has plenty of torque down low and really sings from about 3k revs and up. Mostly I ride in the 3-5k rev zone. I've ridden it on some dirt roads but I think it would be a lot happier with some slightly more dirt oriented tyres in those conditions, it just feels a touch wander-y on the standard street tyres in those conditions.

We do not get The Tracer in the USA. Would you still recommend the FZ07 MT-07 for a 6 foot 196 lb rider or is something else better suited for light weight nimble bike? Would I have to upgrade the suspension?

The FZ-07 (MT-07) was still a popular choice at the launch, a few years ago even with the taller journalists, but it won't be as spacious as the Tracer. It's an exceptional all-rounder however, with nicely balanced suspension for a range of riders, it depends on your expectations. For relatively non-adjustable suspension it's very good, and the newer (2018) FZ/MT-07s should have even better suspension.

I'd recommend going and riding it for yourself. I have owned a 2015 FZ07 since September 2014. Almost 30k miles on it. Only time I had it in the shop was to replace a fork seal around the 20k mile mark(warranty FTW). I am 6'3" @ 240lbs. I love it. Plenty of power for my big frame. I have done a couple 6 hour one way camping trips on it to experiment, and it handled just fine. I did catch a lot of wind though, and it did wear me out a bit, but the bike never missed a beat running 80mph the whole time. Do I feel cramped on it? I have on the rare occasion, but overall, no. If the Tracer 700 comes to the states, I will be trading my FZ in for it. I also own a big cruiser that I camp on most the time, but it's not as fun.

It would definitely be a good bike in Brazil. What a shame!

As a road bike would you buy this over the V-Strom 650? Thanks.

Hey Charlie, I think the MT-07 Tracer would edge out the V-Strom for me if I wasn't considering the difference in price, however the V-Strom is a fair bit cheaper. They are both exceptional, but for a road bike only and with the standard panniers I'd probably go the Tracer.

Horses for courses ... the V Strom is a dual purpose with some off road ability whereas the Tracer is a sports tourer ... I like 'em both for different reasons !

Definitely. I couldn't live with the V-Strom display. Very dated.

@@simonthomas5367 Yes but it's much clearer than the Tracer's, with nice red needle and big digits. Backlight is also superb on the Vstrom. Just saying.

Fueling on the MT-07 powerplant is pretty smooth. Are you thinking the MT-09 triple in the Tracer 900? That triple can be snatchy in A-mode.
