  • New Gurkha recruits have arrived in the UK ready to start the next phase of their training in North Yorkshire.
For some of the 170 recruits arriving from Nepal to a cold and damp Manchester Airport in three groups over a two-day period, it was the first time travelling in an aircraft.
The recruits' new home for the next nine months will be Infantry Training Centre Catterick, where they will be put through their paces in a bid to join the Brigade of Gurkhas.

That must be tough travelling all that way and having jet lag and not being used to the UK weather and going straight to basic training...a big massive respect to them all and best of luck to them.

I would imagine that they are given a few days to relax before any serious basic training is given.
I would imagine that the first few days are classroom only. The weeks after is when they start their proper basic training.

I met a Gurka in Malaysia who was working as a security guard. Seeings as the pay in the British army is extremely high compared to wages in Malaysia, I was confused as to why he was in Malaysia, instead of, perhaps, staying in Britain. As it turned out, he had served in the Indian army as a Gurkha, so, once he left he was still relatively poor. I didn't know at the time, but there are 7 Gurkha regiments in the Indian army...

Gambia and Zimbabwe are 2 countries that left, but have now applied to rejoin..... Just remember this fact. If it was not for the British Empire, most countries would still be walking everywhere, the roads would still be dirt, there would be no trains, cars or motorcycles, no computers or internet. They would still be living as they were before Europeans arrived, for some, that was the stone age" Before the British arrived on the shores of Bharat (India) it controlled 25% of world trade, was the main producers of cloth, exporter of gold and diamonds. There were no mines of diamonds anywhere else. Trains were made to transport loot not to benefit the locals. The British caused a famine that killed 5 million bengalis. India was already democratic with local village elections, was okay with gays and transexualism, was okay with the use of medicinal cannabis, already knew surgery and astronomy, built dams, had mega cities. So don't talk through your ass. The British empire stole 45 trillion from India alone and now india has overtaken the British economy within 70 years (in comparison to 200 years of looting) you guys must be the dumbest race on this entire planet

I grew up in a town where Gurkhas trained. It was not uncommon to see them out and about in civies (always looking very respectable in well pressed suits) or in their uniform.
They were always very pleasant and polite and welcoming. I'd always wave at army lorries that went past me, and the Gurkhas always waved and smiled out the open back. It always brought a massive smile to my young face to see them all leaning in to wave and smile ✨
In todays times it may not _"sound right"_ to label them all with the same impressions, but when every one I have met and seen, and I read all these comments (not just here, but anytime I've read about them) of other peoples experiences of them and their people being so decent, it not only deserves to be said. It should be said.

You have got to admire such determination and fortitude to travel all that way to wear the beret. There are young people in UK that wouldn't travel 50 miles from home in army training without moaning how far it is. It's so sad that the Nepalese mindset to endure hardship isn't in many young people of UK. They are a tough bunch and UK is lucky to have them.
