It was a mistake. The second he saw Sam took it, he would have chased him down. Heartsbane was for Dickon
Plus it was priceless
DICKON😂😂
Hehe Dickon
Hehehe Dickon
Randyll loved that sword more than all of his children combined.
"He just sorta forgot."
😂😂😂😂😂
😭😭😭😭😭
DnD terrible choice flashback*
😂😂😂
I get the feeling they were pulling plot threads out of a hat by that point in the series trying to tie up loose ends. Sadly they couldn't keep characters consistent, let alone starbucks coffee cups off set.
By that point the show runners didn't care
They stopped caring when they killed Tywin
@@danyelpeter1376no they stop caring after jon's death, they run out of ideas (cuz thats where the books end)
@@Vebian nah they already stopped at season 4 the reason why Tyrion killed his father is so much better in the books in the show it doesn't even make sense
Why did Randall Tarly not hunt down Sam? I blame Benniof and Weiss fucking up the later seasons.
D&D decided after S6 they were over the show and rather than let another show runner continue the 40 episodes we needed for constant internal logic like that, they condensed it into 13 episodes where things happened because the plot needed them to or didn't happen because there wasn't enough screen time available.
@@bbaker4117aka they sold us out. Yup.

@@j84martinez44 One of many missed opportunities of the later seasons.
He might have chuckled with a bit of pride saying, “I didn’t think he had it in him. Still gonna kill him though, but in honor of his courage, I will give him a head start.”
Then dragons happened.
@@Zieg_Games That could've been a really interesting moment: seeing that Sam made his father proud after all but hating his father enough to realise making him proud shouldn't matter
D&D : “Randall Tarly kinda forgot about Samwell and Heartsbane”
The showrunners didn't care since they decided to kill off the Tarleys even though they have been Targaryen loyalist their whole life. If they wanted to, they could have saved Dickon by sending him after Sam while his father was taking a bath in dragon fire but they had to speed run someone's fall into madness just so Sam could say "she's mad bro" to Jon.
Or why Randall sided with Cersei instead of the Tyrell’s, I honestly don’t know why anyone supported Cersei like she has no claim, nobody likes her or her family. I hate D&D for being so stupid 💀💀
They made him nationalistic over the foreigners

Benioff&Weiss: " Randyll Tarly kinda forgot about Heartsbane"
They only added Randyll and Dickon to the show so Bron could laugh at his name.
I also thought that they fought for the mad king during the war. So, it kimf of confused me when he wouldn't bend the knee.
I like to think he was stunned that Sam had the balls to take it. Maybe in a brief moment he had doubts about his opinion on his eldest son.
i think it’s more questionable that randyll’s dumbass went to kings landing, got strong armed into helping cersei, went back to the reach and continued to help cersei because he was racist, and then died because he lost a battle in an open field to dothraki and dragons
this is not the same randyll that gave robert his 1 significant defeat during the rebellion
Agreed!! Randyll was loyal to the Targaryens. I would think he'd be happy to back Daenarys over backing Cersei.
First of all, the whole "Randall beat Robert" thing is a bit more hyped up than it actually was. Yes, he defeated Robert's army, but it wasn't any kind of "crushing defeat". They slugged it out, and Robert realized it was a bad fight, so he pulled his army back, and was allowed to withdraw. 2nd of all.. the writers sucked, and the later seasons really showed that, so you're right about none of it adding up properly.
@@natedaniels3655agreed it’s his army and Robert realized it’s a bad move so he pulled back and didn’t do his signature move or going for the leader and killing them with his own hands. He killed many a legendary lords with his own hands. Would have loved to see Randal and Robert face off in single combat.
Wait, how was he racist?? For not wanting Dany to rule with her foreign army?? If thats it I would say he was more xenophobic
@@TheSaltiestPickle either way he was an idiot
“Randyl kinda forgot about the Valyrian steel flee.. sword”
answer: "We kinda forgot"
That's past season 4, so no directions from Martin as how to deal with this and many other side quests so they just d&d'ed it
While I agree... as a DM in a D&D campaign I believe in consequences. A player can certainly try something stupid, but they'll surely face the consequences.
Dumb and Dumber don't work like that. They give certain characters thick plot armour that distorts reality and logic around them.
The only way that plot line would have made sense is if Randyll Tarly and Dickon had been called away from home to take part in the war. If he left Sam and the sword then perhaps Sam could have taken it , but his mother wouldn't tell Randyll that it was gone. Because otherwise Randyll Tarly knew Sam was going to the Citadel and would have gone to retrieve it.
Another Sam moment that I found questionable is when Sam arrives home. He has taken a vow to the Night's Watch, swearing to not marry or father children on pain of death if they break this vow. Sam arrives with Gilly and what is supposed to be their illegitimate child. He surprised his mother with Gilly dirty and dressed it what appears to be old sack material, and a baby, and all Sam's mother can say is that Gilly is pretty.
And another point of questionable nature plotwise is that after going North of the Wall on the Great Quest and then, having been driven back by the white walkers, you have the men at Craster's literally starving. Sam then takes Gilly and the baby and makes for the Wall when the mutiny happens. After this long and very physical ordeal Sam should afterwards have been a good deal more in shape.
TBF book Sam though Randyll would be proud to find out he got a wildling pregnant. Though yeah, he would still be pissed at the possibility of a son contesting Dickon's claim.
Sam like Maester Aemon basically double whammied the celibacy pledges so I'm also surprised the Citadel didn't caught on to it, considering he had Gilly live in Oldtown (don't remember if he explained the real situation to anyone).
To be fair he's near 300 pounds in the book so I can picture him going from that fat to normal show fat
lol Maester says it all men who broach their vows be held accountable. None be left to man their black
@@nunyabiznes33 Gilly's son would not be able to contest Dickson's claim because he is a bastard.
Sadly the “kind of forgot about” jokes are more facts than just jokes…
I was on the mend for a month, and binged GoT again for a retrospective. The early seasons were fantastic because GRRM was the author of the story and D&D were translators from book to show. Once Season 5 started and they started running out of books, it was less and less GRRM's high concept epic fantasy and more and more just-another-show. Once D&D decided they were over it and wanted to condense 40 episodes of story into 13 for S7 & 8, the show was doomed.
Yeah not a fan of this idea, samwell never stole the sword in the books, they shouldnt have added that to the show. Samwell has more character than to just run off with his family sword. In the books he talks of how his dad would have HUNTED him down if he stole a donkey when leaving for the wall, but only to get the donkey back. He never would have taken the sword.
@@jeremyvanessen2687 yeah it just a convenient excuse to get another Valyrian steel sword up North when they didn't have enough screen time to flesh out a reason for Heartsbane to be there for battle. If the story doesn't have consistent internal logic, then it doesn't have anything.
And i think in the books Sam reached the citadel at the same time his father was in kings landing..the show is so limited to the books
Yeah, I don't remember him travelling back to Hornhill (which is off the way even for TV Sam traveling by foot). He went straight to Oldtown from Braavos, he didn't got time to visit family.
Not just that but also it had no meaning, Jorah used heartsbane during the long night but thats it, wish Sam figured out how to make Valyrian steel again.
(Dragon) Fire + (Human) Blood = Valyrian Steel
They left in the night with a horse. They would wake up in the morning and find out then that the sword is missing and they are along gone by then.
Exactly. It would take a very long time to catch up to someone with a 10 hour head start and Old town is not all that far. And Tarley would have to catch him well before reaching Oldtown being that he was at war agaisnt the Hightowers who would gladly arrest him.
He found a note where the sword should be reading: "I need to borrow this for about a week."
-Hot Pie
D&D: "Well, Randyll just sorta forgot he had a Valyrian steel sword"
Randyl had other more burning problems at the time than chasing Sam.
The sword is negligible cause the lannisters promised him high garden; he has a LOT to gain from that.
But whats actually mad is that he would ever align with cersei in the first place. House Tarley are targaryens loyalist and even faced of with Robert during the rebellion. He should have absolutely taken Danys side in the show. But my guess is that in the books, he will allign with young griff (aegon targaryen) and not dany. But since the show doesn’t have young griff he went with cersei
The show kind of forgot about the significance of Valyrian steel, the history of House Tarly, the personality of Randyll Tarly, and well, just about everything else
Yeah, book Randyll Tarly would have sent an ARMY after Heartsbane if necessary. . .
Yes, even though he was summoned.
Yep. He would have sent a minor lord sworn to him. A Valyrian Steel sword is worth as much as an army. As duty oriented as Lord Randyll is, this is the very pride and honor of his house at stake. I think he could have easily persuaded Mace Tyrell to send a contingent from the siege at Storm's End. And if not, it's probably the one thing that would make him disobey an order.
@@JELazarusmost of the lords between hornhill and oldtown would be sworn to the Hightowers who he was at war with.
He didn't forget, he just didn't notice and nobody wanted to be the one to tell him.
I think he was just sorta impressed that Sam had the balls to do that.
Perhaps he was impressed that the son he despised was willingnto ack what was his by birthright, black or no black.
Before he even knew it was gone Sam would be like 10+ hours away. Sam is going to old town where the Tarleys would be greatly outnumbered and unable to assert dominance.
One of hundreds of plot holes post source material.
Nah he would've just sent a raven to old Town for his arrest
I think we’re supposed to believe that Lord Tarlry saw how special his son had become, regardless of his nature a father can do crazy things when it comes his children. Or maybe it’s just lazy, commercial, mass consumption media laziness. But.:..it’s not like I’m a blue lipped warlock, red priest or a one eyed raven so what do I know anyway.
Literally did not answer the question… lol
The writers just forgot.
He knew winter was coming
they got turned to ash before he gota chance i guess
Randyll Tarly taking cersei as his queen was weird af.
The only way to really explain it is that he DID send people to find sam. But he just couldnt get to him. And rather than make a big fuss out of it. He was so angry and ashamed of it. He just refused to speak about it. See no evil hear no evil kinda thing.
Hornhill is not very far so it’s actually unlikely someone could have caught them before getting into Hightower territory. Sam can cross into that area as a single rider. A group of Tarely men could not without being stopped by a vassel house of the Hightowers who they were at war with and would not allow them to go hunt someone down.
@@adamdodds144 you aren't wrong, and that certainly makes it difficult, but with house tarley preparing to march southward, I'd have thought he'd send sellswords or something, like bron. Since it'd be considered dirty work
“Randy kinda forgot about the Valyrian Steel Sword.”
They really thought they dis something with these characters. They completely ruined them.
Obviously deep down he knew it was safe with "sam the Slayer"
I actually find it weirder that the Tarley's didn't question how the hell he wasn't put to death for breaking the oath he took when he took the black. Not a word about it.
David Bennioff: "Randyll just sort of forgot that his most valued possession was stolen"
Randyll kinda forgot about it LOL. And it never happened in the books, Sam never went back home. They travelled by ship so they dropped off straight to Oldtown after their miserable stay in Braavos.
Even in the show it kinda didn't made sense that they passed by his home on the way to Oldtown. Hornhill was way south in the Dornish Marches, on the borderlands of the Reach. And even if he did stayed home a bit, there's no way they're outspeeding Randyll out of them hill country.
I remember Arya met Sam, Gilly, and the brother that was a bard or something while training to be a Facelessman. Bard guy was deserting the Nights watch and she later killed him for it.
He knew Sam was going to the Citidal.
And what is he going to do just March into old town and take it back. Hightowers who were his enemies at the time would sieze him and keep him as a prionser of war…
I think the writers forgot about it
I think they simply left it out of the show when they attempt to squeeze everything into just a few episodes seasons....
Maybe he thought the sword could finally push him to become a man
Obviously he wanted his son to become more manly so him showing interest in a sword was something his father wanted.
The sword, of their house. Agter showing up with a Woman that nobody wanted. He's the most husband that family has ever seen.
Depending on the size of heartsbane it might not be a practical sword to carry to battle. Very much like Ice. Maybe if the sword was a bastard sword it could be different. My guess is that Randal most likely never noticed the sword missing before he was called into action.
In the books Randal is in the crownlands cleaning up the blood mummers and other outlaws. There is no mention that he has the sword and Sam is at the citadel. He can likely go home, steal the sword before Randal gets home
He gives it to Jorah Mormont to wield in the fight against the white walkers. It's essentially as large as Long Claw that Jon wields. Usual sise of a sword. Sam just isn't strong enough to fight with a long sword. Not necessarily bigger...
@@alisonfecteau2315 they need the steel against the wights. And from I remember he was using 2 hands. Maybe not as long as ice but going into a battle with 2 hand great sword isn’t as effective against people with a sword and shield.
Edit. I looked it up. 2 handed great sword. So they are in fact not the same size sword. Long Claw is a bastard sword and Heartsbane is a 2 handed great sword
he would notice the most important and expensive thing missing from his keep, heartsbane was famously used alot by their family.
Maybe he let him get away with it because he deep down loved Sam and knew he treated him wrong but because of the age he had to maintain almost a disgust of his son. Or maybe he was fulfilling a family prophecy.
Because they were”Subverting Expectations”!
A better question is why George didn’t make more requirements than “Tell me who Jon Snows real parents are.”
Misplaced vanity was unceremoniously burnt alive
I think Lord Randyl was chuffed that his firstborn son had grown the bravery do high level larceny, and in a contrary way came to accept that the ancestral blade of House Tarly is Sam's birthright.
Randall Tarly kind of forgot about Heartsbane, the prized ancestral sword of House Tarly. But, Heartsbane didn't forget about him.
Just the usual terrible writing from the disastrous writers. Season 5 to 8 are an absolute embarrassment in storytelling. Every character and storyline was destroyed
I feel dickon tarly told randall tarly his father that, he will get it back from samwell later as he told his father not be ruthless on samwell for this . Dickon still loved his brother samwell .
I think deep down he cared for the wellbeing of Sam...which is why the sword was meant for Sam in the end. ❤
Yeah they overlooked that one.
He respected the sheer balls it took, for someone as cowardly as Sam to take Hearstbane and let it go. Or just thought he'd bring it back, ya know, being a coward and all
Another question is why would Randyll Tarly support the mother of the previous 2 child-kings with no other legitimate claim to the throne over the only living child of the king who he fought to defend in a rebellion just some 20 years earlier? Him backing Cersei over Daenerys makes zero sense.
When You want your Son to be a Real Man and He took a Sword. Would you be Mad? He thinks Sam might be starting to be a fighter.😅
He didn’t run him down because the show runners didn’t give him that opportunity.
Because Dan and Dave didn’t care for lore and thought they knew better than GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR MARRRRRRRRTIN
I did wonder why Sam just was able to in the middle of the night steal a treasured blade from his father odd
the showrunners kinda forgot
Or maybe because Sam was still his son. He may have felt shame but that doesn't mean no love.
The only way this makes sense to me (barring no book precedent or insight from George Martin and D&D taking their wing it approach to it of course) is that Randyll Tarly woke up the next morning to find Heartsbane and Sam and Gilly gone and was like, ‘Damn son…I didn’t think you had it in you! You know what…you had the balls to do it, you keep it. It’s yours, you’ve earned it.’
"DRACARYS"🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love this character, he was an ass but I think it was the one time he respected Sam. Like damn you really had the balls to bring your wildling girlfriend into MY house and steal MY families sword! Smirks XD
This is more of a theory, but i believe this is randle way of showing a little bit respect towards sam for growing some balls for once.
Well D&D didn't have that kind of time. They had other stuff to do so they were trying to get the series done as soon as possible. So that is why.
I think it was because stealing the sword took serious guts. Maybe he thought his son had finally grown a pair and allowed him to keep it temporarily out of respect
Writers just sort of forgot about everything the last 2 ands half seasons
"So, what do you think?"
I think Dumb and Dumber (Dave and Dan) don't know how to write a show
Sam visiting his home was another stupid move in the season then again when ppl can just teleport all over the map it makes sense. In the books the journey should take months.
He probably was, until his banners were called on by Cersei. Randall’s sense of duty and honour likely outweighed his love for the sword.
Just another way in which D&D show that their guess of R+L=J was just dumb luck.
The sword woulda been lost had Sam not took it. They musta knew Sam was gon take it back in S1 🤷🏾♂️
Maybe it was a fake. Maybe the real sword was locked up somewhere.
This could have been fixed with a 30 second scene. The day after Sam leaves Randall notices Heartbane is missing. In a fit of rage he tells Sams mom the horrible things he plans to personally do to Sam. Family honor demand this job cannot be outsourced. A scared maester enters. A raven from Kingslanding arrived and demands Randall and his heir present to Kings Landing at once. Randall vows Sam will never see another winter and Heartsbane will be returned. Then of course Drogon ended that plan.
Ya that and Sam would never have taken heartsbane. His father may be terrible but Sam still is dutiful to his family. That and Randall’s view of disliking maesters is sort of invalidated with Sam grabbing a sword. Sam’s character is his intelligence
It was really dumb for sure. The only reason I can think of is that they had to go to King’s Landing due to the Tyrells and Lannisters uniting their armies to get Margaery Back from the High Sparrow. Not sure why he never sent anyone after Sam though
Would say he was ashamed it got stolen so he hid the fact is was.
I thought Sam's brother and father were killed. And that is why they didn't pursue him
I think there were more pressing matters and in his mind Sam was so weak,he would be able to get it back right after they raided olena
You can’t include everything in a show. There’s just too much story. But it would’ve been nice to have seen it acknowledged.
I think he just forgot about the sword…
I think he figured Sam wouldn't have the nerve to take it and he probably didn't notice. It was gone and he had enough issues to worry about rather than getting it back straight away.
He kinda forgot about it 🙄😒 That was Benioff's answer for every mistake he did🤮
I think that this show went down so bad.
I think Dumb and Dumber (Dan and Dave) didn’t care and didn’t know because they are only as good as the source material they have. Once it was uncharted territory, you saw they had no creative ability or skill.
Wrong. Most questionable action by Randyl was his hatred and wish of death upon Sam when in the show his brother is older, which would make him heir anyway.
I think it was about airtime.😂
