The video quality on cameras is getting amazing. I think the best use for this isn't really anything to share with people but as a dashcam. I might get this for my bicycle commute. The image stabilization isn't quite there yet, maybe the next one.
Wow, I don’t understand how some people are saying the 8 is “washed out”… it’s less-saturated than the 7, but that’s because the 7 turns all the greens into the same shade! It blows out the pastel sky blue of your shirt into an almost cyan shade! The 8 isn’t washed out, it’s just realistic! The light and shadows are right, the hues of the greenery are right, the skin tones and clothes are right. Maybe in an edit, a 5-10% saturation and/or warmth boost would make it a bit more visually appealing, just like a bit of an EQ on audio, but the balance of realism is almost spot-on as it comes.
This looks very useful if you want a 'dash cam' on the go as you mentioned in the video, I wish there would be more competition with products like these.

@@lasskinn474 the reason I picked the EP7 over any other camera on the market is it's quick and simple to wear or remove. Everything else needed a base plate and harness or some form of hard mount. I wanted/needed something that could be worn with just a T shirt mid summer as well as multi layers mid winter so a harness was out of the question. And although I'm pretty hard headed at times I didn't really fancy having a hard mount screwed or epoxied to the side of my skull. Horses for courses and for my needs it fits the bill 100%. Now I've seen the EP8 review it'll be my goto cam if and when I need to upgrade the EP7.
very interesting! I have a GoPro Hero Session 5 for sometime and i'm considering to replace it to a newer one... i liked what i see on this review!~ Thansk for sharing it!
You mention plugging into a power bank, I do this so I can record my full shift at work. One thing I will say is, even though my EP7 is pretty light it does take a good few weeks for the top of your ears to get used to the weight and how the headband sits on 2 very small parts of your ears. It can be pretty painful, ok it can be really bloody painful until the skin toughens up a little, but that is over the course of a 7 hour shift wearing the camera non stop. So if the EP8 is slightly heavier be aware there will be added discomfort over extended periods of wear. I've only had the EP7 for about 7 weeks, but so far it's saved me 3 huge fraudulent insurance claims and my boss around £2000 in "order not received" claims. It really is a sad state of affairs when I feel I have to wear a body cam of any form just to deliver fish n chips, but that's how the world is these days.
@@BLUE_OCTOBER-TRIX I'm not a button up shirt type of guy. I did look at the body mounted style, but they either need a harness or a hard mount, not practical when they'd constantly get snagged on the seatbelt. Noticed that the EP8 Colour profile looks a lot flatter, which is a good thing for those who edit, but not so for casual shooters. Would be interested to know if there's any presets for Colour, Natural, Vivid ect.
The EP7 colours were way too saturated - the grey path I was walking down showed up as brown on the EP7. I could turn up the saturation on the EP8 in editing and it’d look better than if I tried to fix the EP7 by turning it down because the colours on that one were just off rather than subdued. Of course I didn’t do either so you get a truer reflection of what comes out of the camera.
I noticed that too. The walking path looked gray on the EP8 but brown on the EP7. But, as Techmoan replied, the path is closer to a grey color. The automatic white balance also seems to make a difference. When he's looking at the path, the vegetation on either side looks washed out. But when he turned his head to look at the field, the green looked more green.
The main issue seemed to be the sun/sky blowing out the picture on the EP8, maybe could do with a polarising filter and or lens hood but options are going to be limited with such a small camera

It would be interesting if they were able to add some kind of gyroscopic stabilization to the lens, not only to keep it more steady when moving, but to always keep the image upright, even if your head is titled. I get that would make the price even higher, but that would be an awesome feature :D
you can't gyro stabilize pitch or roll in a lens you have to do that on the sensor which is something that basically only high end moving sensor mirrorlesses do like the sony a7 series

Nice video as usual. I think you could put that bit about scammers as a separate video if that is a big problem and happens often on the channel , as not everyone who might fall for the scam will watch this video until the end 🙂
I wonder if the "vertical video" feature would be more useful if you wanted to have the camera on a standard tripod mount or use it as a webcam. Since otherwise you'd have to mount it at a 90° angle like on your head.
Great video as ever. This looks great and saves the installation of cables through the interior of the car but I think I'll wait for the EP9 unless the audio issue is resolved via a firmware update.
I have the EP-6 and EP-7. I use them to shoot bike rides and for making my RC aircraft videos for youtube. My 2 beefs with these cameras is: 1. the lack of sharpness and detail in 1080p and above videos. My $300 phone cameras actually shoot sharper video. The second is that the unit will not hold a full charge overnight. I typically have to charge it for 2-4 hours before any use, which is inconvenient. They need a removable battery so it doesn't drain away so much power 24/7 just sitting there. Or maybe a mechanical switch to isolate the pack for the electronics until needed. And for the record I have had batteries fail in both. I just recently cracked open my 1.5 year old EP-7 to fit a new 1000mAh Li-Ion pack after it stopped taking a charge, and a few years ago the pack in what was a 9 month old EP-6 swelled up and split the case apart itself. That one also got a new battery. Fortunately my RC hobby has made me familiar with Li-Pi and Li-Ion packs. I DO prefer the 90 degree field of view in the EP-7 though, since wide angle lenses make things look smaller, which would not help me one bit shooting small model aircraft. I use my EP-6 for mountain biking where the wider view is a benefit.
Think the gopro is still pretty king amongst the headmounts since they have a cap or head strap for you. Even though it's hard on the wallet, the quality is way more worth it in my opinion. I remember having a wedding I had to do and an old gopro hero 1 was capable of really smooth framerate and sound compared to my sony camera that I had bought for 400$. The 500$ price tag on the gopro was worth it at the time in my opinion. Right now the cheapest one is 300$ and with the head strap it's 10$ more.
Great indepth video, answers any questions that may arise. Noticed now the oHo 4k Sunshine sunglasses seems to be an alternative choice. Maybe a review on the sunglass version is in store?
Is it possible to hang the camera on the other side of your head? In the car clip the A bar takes up a considerable amount of screen space, which could be a bit better if it were on the other side, filming more from the center. Not an issue in other countries, but it would be nice.
If you don't need all day recording or you don't need your hands to be free, your phone generally does a much better job. I like the idea of it being a portable dash cam though, as like you, I hardwire mine into my cars. Still have the DrivePro 200 that you recommended many years ago 😁 all I've done is tape a filter to it.
Watched the whole video straight through till the "Price" chapter. It costs HOW much for a camera that looks THAT bad? That's when I realized RUclips had decided to stream the video in 480p. Had a good laugh and re-watched at 4k.
I know it is super easy to joke about, but there are a lot of vulnerable people who might fall for this type of thing. I think the best approach is just blocking all the emojis and phrases they use, its obviously a constant battle, and not one Matt should have to be fighting, but it does help.

Also, good tip for anyone who sees a scam comment: Use the triple-dot button on the far side of the comment to REPORT it. (On desktop the triple-dot is hidden until you hover the mouse over the comment.) Reporting such comments helps take some of the burden off of us making videos for RUclips since we're not moderating comments 24/7 and can't always take them down quickly!
Remote is useful for those of us that won't be using the earpiece. Thank you for this review!
Nice to see you getting out and about. I sometimes get the impression that you live in your man cave and are only allowed out on special occasions. Loving the ep7 a bit more than the ep8. The colours are bit nicer on the older model. Great video. Thanks Matt. Can't wait to see what my prize is (joke)!!!
Your second sentence was accurate.
@@Techmoan Did you get any Borg nanoprobes with the camera ?
@@Techmoan 😅
Good to see you on my home turf (Conwy and Llandudno) Matt!
I'd recognise the Great Orme Tramway anywhere, what a pleasant surprise.
I feel like the GoPro style headmounts are maybe a bit clumsy, but have clear advantages over this earpiece approach - particularly for us glasses wearers
Better quality as well
Great video...and that edit/swirly wipe at 16:31 is just sublime! Brilliant!! 🤩
Thank you for showing that beautiful English countryside. I enjoyed and appreciated your review even more because of your choice of scenery. Also, it may be best for you to pin a comment in each of your videos warning of scams and that you do not have comment notified giveaways. Perhaps this may lower the number of potential suckers out there falling for these scams.
The video quality, stabilization and microphone are "good". I wouldn't say great or amazing.
I think $300 is a bit high for what you get.
But if you really need a head mounted cam, it's probably worth considering this one.
Large ketchup packets.
300 oughta be superb in 2022 even if you can't deal with a headband that goes around
There's actually a camera shortage going on right now, the price isn't that surprising
@@TheGinGear plenty of gopros for sale anywhere? sjcams and usual brands too, insta360's.. amazon has lots of wearable cameras available, so whats under shortage? locally where I live there's no shortage whatsoever either, if anything more stuff than a year ago in price from five bucks to six hundred bucks.
the price is partially to bring a premium feel to buying it. with that wide of a price range and so much stuff on the market it's hard to convince the consumer that your companys device is the right one at the right money.
I have a GoPro Hero Session 5 for sometime and i'm considering to replace it to a newer one... i liked what i see on this review!~
Thansk for sharing it!
Great view of Conwy Castle if I'm not mistaking :). Nice video again
Can't believe you were driving round about quarter of a mile from my home. I know exactly where a couple of those in-car clips were filmed!
LOL. RUclips froze on my tv just as you said “now about battery life, not brilliant”. Sat and waited for a bit. Thought it was a joke. 🤣
You should get a body cam instead get one of the types the police use like the axion Then just get like a button up shirt and attach it to your shirt
@@BLUE_OCTOBER-TRIX I'm not a button up shirt type of guy. I did look at the body mounted style, but they either need a harness or a hard mount, not practical when they'd constantly get snagged on the seatbelt. My ears have become used to the cam now, and occasionally I'll still feel I'm wearing it even though it's sitting on the table in front of me. .
Your intro and outros are amazing.. I don't know who composed this but I really like it.. Thank you
Matt, whatever you claim, you are the queen in my eyes. 💂👸💂
Oh, Llandudno tramway!! 😍 One of my favourite places in UK.
Excellent video, I got up early this morning, and was running through my favorite channels, once I started watching your video, I realized that I have been a fan of your videos for over a 10 years, and have enjoyed everyone.
Thank you Eric
I miss the dash cam style videos, this was nice!
Great cam, I love the feature where you need to take your glasses off. Now all my mates can see me walking into things in glorious 4K.
"It mentions that you can shoot vertical video if you've lost your mind." Totally WAS NOT expecting such a savage side comment haha.
Noticed that the EP8 Colour profile looks a lot flatter, which is a good thing for those who edit, but not so for casual shooters. Would be interested to know if there's any presets for Colour, Natural, Vivid ect.
Just said the same. I’d say the EP7 had vibrant richer colours. The EP8 looked slightly washed out.
@@xr6lad "vibrant"? "rich"? Here, on my calibrated monitor it looked like someone had painted with primary colours only. I can't imagine how horrible this must look on a monitor at factory settings...
Thanks good review with all the bullet points I needed. Appreciated.
a camera review with techmoan is like a blast from the past. No tour of Manchester this time though
It's like a very low budget dystopian retinal implant
Ah Great this is why I came to Techmoan years ago for dash-Cam reviews
where's the night time footage like you usually do he he 😎🤣
It's sad that you have to add the scam warning at the end, but I appreciate that you did. Thanks Matt.
Oooh, a camera to record me entering the competition - that I never entered! ;)
I love Techmoan, he has the courage to go in public with the tech I wish I was using. Also, some people are selling their Verified tick marks now, so you have to make sure the Name is what you're expecting as well.
@@andymerrett that's great to know! Thanks.
Some scammers will add the checkmark emoji to their name ✅, but even so, if it hasn't got the background shape (its official name is a _stadium,_ though some people may call it a _pill shape_ ), it's not the real person.
@@DaedalusYoung Thanks
The sound from the EP7 is way better...less saturated...so scary driving on the left side of road...we've got relatives in Britain...I won' drive there...ouch! (i'm from Canada)...love your videos - absolutely fascinating...Keep on!
this should be massively useful for when i start biking to work! Dang!
I just love the fact that Techmoan drives a Smart car! I currently have a first generation Smart cabrio and she’s a dream. Separate question though, have you had any problems with your Smart yet? My mom also has a 3rd generation Smart and I’d just like another smart owner’s perspective as well as there are so few of us.
I was watching the video for about a minute and you ended up in a firefight with a tank, I then realized I clicked on a war video next to yours which also had a head cam. I was so confused 😂
Thank you for chapters
Thank you for 60FPS
Thanks , again from Sydney , watch all your videos.
Muchas gracias por el video. Muy bien realizado e instrucciones muy apropiadas. Usaré este video como manual de instrucciones cuando reciba la cámara. Un saludo.
Since otherwise you'd have to mount it at a 90° angle like on your head.
excellent review, very informative and well presented. thank you very much.
Hope your well mat. appreciate all the effort and time you put into making great videos.
Oh Mat, but you *are* the queen of all our hearts
8:26 ...and infinitely better that panning using 'vertical video' like SO many clueless people do ! :)
Great video as ever. This looks great and saves the installation of cables through the interior of the car but I think I'll wait for the EP9 unless the audio issue is resolved via a firmware update.
Mom, that weird old man is talking to his glasses again!
(no offense here, great content as usual Mat!)
This is actually pretty decent! It's a bit pricey but it's very functional.

@@terencejay8845 wtf 😳 yeah nah that's too much.

Wow. I have very little interest in headcams, but your video made me realise how much I miss walking through the European countryside.
The voice on the camera cues reminds me of GLaDOS from the Portal series
Think the gopro is still pretty king amongst the headmounts since they have a cap or head strap for you. Even though it's hard on the wallet, the quality is way more worth it in my opinion. I remember having a wedding I had to do and an old gopro hero 1 was capable of really smooth framerate and sound compared to my sony camera that I had bought for 400$. The 500$ price tag on the gopro was worth it at the time in my opinion. Right now the cheapest one is 300$ and with the head strap it's 10$ more.
Awesome! He has the exact same battery I use for powering the LED strip lights I have mounted to my truing stand for when I am doing bicycle wheels.
You are not the Queen but you are British RUclips Royalty 😍
Great indepth video, answers any questions that may arise. Noticed now the oHo 4k Sunshine sunglasses seems to be an alternative choice. Maybe a review on the sunglass version is in store?
Excellent videos. Very informative and comprehensive.
Is it possible to hang the camera on the other side of your head? In the car clip the A bar takes up a considerable amount of screen space, which could be a bit better if it were on the other side, filming more from the center. Not an issue in other countries, but it would be nice.
"Bear in mind just one rule in life: Nobody ever wins competitions that they haven't entered." -Techmoan, 2022
Far as the scammer goes, I seen that same scam going on another youtuber ! Thank you for another great video .
Good to see yer back on cameras/dash cams again. Do you still ride yer Honda motorcycle ? Thank again for all your videos over the years..

Oi! He left it to me not you!
I know it is super easy to joke about, but there are a lot of vulnerable people who might fall for this type of thing. I think the best approach is just blocking all the emojis and phrases they use, its obviously a constant battle, and not one Matt should have to be fighting, but it does help.
Yeah these are damn annoying. Check out Thio Joe’s channel where he’s developed a free app to get rid of these scam comments. About time RUclips built it into their own systems…
