@@theodorebrown4877 thanks for the info, very interesting. I don't do any video editing so I can't comment, but the colours of the older model look better to my eyes and the sound is better too but I prefer wider field of vision on the newer model.
@@skyhill4279 Most consumers prefer oversaturated pictures and images, which is why smartphone cameras tend toward high saturation and contrast by default. This makes everything pop a little more. This makes for a pretty picture that most consumers are going to prefer, but it doesn't actually reflect reality. As Matt has said in a few other comments, the dirt path in the field was gray in real life, but the EP7 made it look brown. This happens because the camera's processor overcompensates. If you are just looking for a simple point-and-shoot device, there's nothing wrong with that kind of processing, but it means you are very limited in what you can do to adjust the look in post. It seems like the EP8 could have had the best of both worlds by having a few processing settings at least something like "standard," "flat," and "vivid." I agree that the sound is much more usable on the EP7.
Whilst I still largely agree, the fact is that most people do watch media like this on their phones rather than on a TV or cinema screen, so it's becoming less and less ridiculous. Most RUclips Short and TikTok videos are shot vertically for this reason.
the reason is because its easier to hold the phone that way, its the phone manufacturers fault, remember flip cameras they solved that problem but phone manufacturers didn't.
@@rob14 yes they could just put the sensor in the vertical orientation. A lot of people even in their 20s will never have owned or used a traditional camera so the whole idea of holding your phone 'like a camera' is alien.
@@rob14 That's a terrible excuse. It isn't hard to flip the phone around. People are just not very bright. I don't think I've ever shot a video vertical cause I know it will look stupid. I feel like the GoPro style headmounts are maybe a bit clumsy, but have clear advantages over this earpiece approach - particularly for us glasses wearers
"... there has to be a bit of personal responsibility to avoid getting scammed here." How dare you, sir! I'm an American! P.S. Love your camera reviews. Keep 'em coming.
I agree. As an American, I was TRIGGERED that I was told I had to have personal responsibility for my actions. As an American, nothing I do with my free will is ever my fault.
I wonder if the "vertical video" feature would be more useful if you wanted to have the camera on a standard tripod mount or use it as a webcam. Since otherwise you'd have to mount it at a 90° angle like on your head.
Noticed that the EP8 Colour profile looks a lot flatter, which is a good thing for those who edit, but not so for casual shooters. Would be interested to know if there's any presets for Colour, Natural, Vivid ect.
The EP7 colours were way too saturated - the grey path I was walking down showed up as brown on the EP7. I could turn up the saturation on the EP8 in editing and it’d look better than if I tried to fix the EP7 by turning it down because the colours on that one were just off rather than subdued. Of course I didn’t do either so you get a truer reflection of what comes out of the camera.
I noticed that too. The walking path looked gray on the EP8 but brown on the EP7. But, as Techmoan replied, the path is closer to a grey color. The automatic white balance also seems to make a difference. When he's looking at the path, the vegetation on either side looks washed out. But when he turned his head to look at the field, the green looked more green.
The main issue seemed to be the sun/sky blowing out the picture on the EP8, maybe could do with a polarising filter and or lens hood but options are going to be limited with such a small camera
@@xr6lad "vibrant"? "rich"? Here, on my calibrated monitor it looked like someone had painted with primary colours only. I can't imagine how horrible this must look on a monitor at factory settings...
Is it possible to hang the camera on the other side of your head? In the car clip the A bar takes up a considerable amount of screen space, which could be a bit better if it were on the other side, filming more from the center. Not an issue in other countries, but it would be nice.
You mention plugging into a power bank, I do this so I can record my full shift at work. One thing I will say is, even though my EP7 is pretty light it does take a good few weeks for the top of your ears to get used to the weight and how the headband sits on 2 very small parts of your ears. It can be pretty painful, ok it can be really bloody painful until the skin toughens up a little, but that is over the course of a 7 hour shift wearing the camera non stop. So if the EP8 is slightly heavier be aware there will be added discomfort over extended periods of wear. I've only had the EP7 for about 7 weeks, but so far it's saved me 3 huge fraudulent insurance claims and my boss around £2000 in "order not received" claims. It really is a sad state of affairs when I feel I have to wear a body cam of any form just to deliver fish n chips, but that's how the world is these days.
@@BLUE_OCTOBER-TRIX I'm not a button up shirt type of guy. I did look at the body mounted style, but they either need a harness or a hard mount, not practical when they'd constantly get snagged on the seatbelt. My ears have become used to the cam now, and occasionally I'll still feel I'm wearing it even though it's sitting on the table in front of me. .
This looks very useful if you want a 'dash cam' on the go as you mentioned in the video, I wish there would be more competition with products like these.
Nice to see you getting out and about. I sometimes get the impression that you live in your man cave and are only allowed out on special occasions. Loving the ep7 a bit more than the ep8. The colours are bit nicer on the older model. Great video. Thanks Matt. Can't wait to see what my prize is (joke)!!!
It would be interesting if they were able to add some kind of gyroscopic stabilization to the lens, not only to keep it more steady when moving, but to always keep the image upright, even if your head is titled. I get that would make the price even higher, but that would be an awesome feature :D
you can't gyro stabilize pitch or roll in a lens you have to do that on the sensor which is something that basically only high end moving sensor mirrorlesses do like the sony a7 series
I think the colors with the EP7 were far more vibrant. The pathway was a deep rich brown and the greens were rich, almost like an HDR settin. While with the EP8 the ground was a dull grey and the greens were a bit washed out. Picture clarity seemed equal though the stabilization on the EP8 gave less seasick feeling while walking. I wonder how many shots you'd miss with that 'taking a picture' before the {click} getting in the way. Does it do that using the app or remote or just the control on the unit itself?
I'd be interested to know whether you would use these head mounted cameras for any of the filming of your review / repair type videos - i.e. close up work on something? I'm considering making videos of some of the work I do, and it never really thought about it before, but maybe a head mounted camera would reduce the need for tripods and constantly moving them when filming alone, without a camera man? I imagine the footage would look too shaky, but that may be a small price to pay if it could massively reduce the time taken to film a job. The hassle of trying to work around tripods and the massive amount of extra time setting up camera angles is one of the main things which has previously put me off. Thanks.

Great review, thanks so much. I’m a metal detectorist & am looking for ways to improve some of my videos. This intrigues me as it will film what I’m looking at, especially when uncovering finds from muddy holes in the ground. I’ve seen comments about the audio….bearing in mind I’m often in the middle of a field & it’s often windy, would this be a nightmare? Would I need separate audio recording to overlay the video? Any help greatly appreciated. I’ve considered GoPro before but their close ups are useless & chest mounted often misses what I want to film. Thanks, Marcus
I am jumping in less than 2 minutes in, simply to ask, if you used both cameras on some sort of mount so they were flush, side by side, do you think they would be good for getting the binocular film needed for 3D? (I'll probably be back in 18 minutes to say "ah, nevermind")
The sound from the EP7 is way better...less saturated...so scary driving on the left side of road...we've got relatives in Britain...I won' drive there...ouch! (i'm from Canada)...love your videos - absolutely fascinating...Keep on!
Thanks for a lovely video. Can you tell us if the app (on the phone) works with the camera as you are recording so you can see what you are recording or does it only work through wi-fi? Where are the settings available, only through the app?
Think the gopro is still pretty king amongst the headmounts since they have a cap or head strap for you. Even though it's hard on the wallet, the quality is way more worth it in my opinion. I remember having a wedding I had to do and an old gopro hero 1 was capable of really smooth framerate and sound compared to my sony camera that I had bought for 400$. The 500$ price tag on the gopro was worth it at the time in my opinion. Right now the cheapest one is 300$ and with the head strap it's 10$ more.
I was watching the video for about a minute and you ended up in a firefight with a tank, I then realized I clicked on a war video next to yours which also had a head cam. I was so confused 😂
I know it is super easy to joke about, but there are a lot of vulnerable people who might fall for this type of thing. I think the best approach is just blocking all the emojis and phrases they use, its obviously a constant battle, and not one Matt should have to be fighting, but it does help.

Great work sir, quick question, can you connect the camera via wifi to a computer. I am looking to connect it to use it on zoom. Or could you connect it to a ipad and use it on Zoom. Thanks, Mark.
I have the EP-6 and EP-7. I use them to shoot bike rides and for making my RC aircraft videos for youtube. My 2 beefs with these cameras is: 1. the lack of sharpness and detail in 1080p and above videos. My $300 phone cameras actually shoot sharper video. The second is that the unit will not hold a full charge overnight. I typically have to charge it for 2-4 hours before any use, which is inconvenient. They need a removable battery so it doesn't drain away so much power 24/7 just sitting there. Or maybe a mechanical switch to isolate the pack for the electronics until needed. And for the record I have had batteries fail in both. I just recently cracked open my 1.5 year old EP-7 to fit a new 1000mAh Li-Ion pack after it stopped taking a charge, and a few years ago the pack in what was a 9 month old EP-6 swelled up and split the case apart itself. That one also got a new battery. Fortunately my RC hobby has made me familiar with Li-Pi and Li-Ion packs. I DO prefer the 90 degree field of view in the EP-7 though, since wide angle lenses make things look smaller, which would not help me one bit shooting small model aircraft. I use my EP-6 for mountain biking where the wider view is a benefit.
Great video as ever. This looks great and saves the installation of cables through the interior of the car but I think I'll wait for the EP9 unless the audio issue is resolved via a firmware update.

The colour on EP7 looks much warmer to me. Great video.
Agree. I’d say they look richer and more vibrant. The EP8 looked washed out a bit.
@@xr6lad definitely.
@@skyhill4279 Because the EP7 is oversaturated. The EP8 is recording in a flat profile which is much better for editing.
It seems like the EP8 could have had the best of both worlds by having a few processing settings at least something like "standard," "flat," and "vivid."
I agree that the sound is much more usable on the EP7.
You can shoot vertical video if you’ve lost your mind 🤣 delivered so casually 🤣🤣
I loved that! 🤣 Like it was the text from the specifications.
Pure old skool Techmoan. Even put a ‘retro filter’ on the camera footage, to make it look like it’s from ten years ago 😁.
Yes, natural colors. No artificially blown up colors.
They both really have that old dashcam video quality to them...especially the EP7 with its blown out colors
What timestamp?
The most exhaustive, detailed demo I've ever seen!! Thanks so much!!!
100% agree. It's absolutely amazing to me how many people shoot video the wrong way with their phones or cameras in a vertical view. 🤦♂️
But yeah they should have a setting for people who think it's difficult turning their phone in the other direction.
@@PotatoPirate123 Thank God I don't have tick tock. It looks stupid. I'm sorry. I can't watch videos shot that way.
As always, another unbiased thorough review. Never stop, dear sir.
I subscribed to this channel because the passion is not neglected. The effort and the technical details are remarkable and exemplary. Nice greetings from Germany.
Also, good tip for anyone who sees a scam comment: Use the triple-dot button on the far side of the comment to REPORT it. (On desktop the triple-dot is hidden until you hover the mouse over the comment.) Reporting such comments helps take some of the burden off of us making videos for RUclips since we're not moderating comments 24/7 and can't always take them down quickly!
I love how you take footage of England as I get a camera review and I get to see parts of England I don't see on normal television.
I feel like the GoPro style headmounts are maybe a bit clumsy, but have clear advantages over this earpiece approach - particularly for us glasses wearers
Better quality as well
That brings back memories. Long time since I've been to Llandudno/Conwy!
Old skool. The reason I came across your videos then stayed for the rest :)
Thanks Matt. This is exactly what I was looking for. Keep up the good work!

@@Ciborium 😂😂😂brill.
I wonder if the "vertical video" feature would be more useful if you wanted to have the camera on a standard tripod mount or use it as a webcam. Since otherwise you'd have to mount it at a 90° angle like on your head.
So grateful for this channel today. A necessary distraction. Thanks Mat
after watching this video i feel like i need a head mounted cam in my life. has quite a few interesting use cases
"If you're brand new to the internet this week" 😂 PMSL
Noticed that the EP8 Colour profile looks a lot flatter, which is a good thing for those who edit, but not so for casual shooters. Would be interested to know if there's any presets for Colour, Natural, Vivid ect.
Just said the same. I’d say the EP7 had vibrant richer colours. The EP8 looked slightly washed out.
I'd recognise the Great Orme Tramway anywhere, what a pleasant surprise.
I was stouned by the picture quality, then heart the price... No wonder. :) Great video, as always. Thanks!
surprisingly good video quality from that EP8! Quite surprised! Thank you! Great quality video as always!!!
You should get a body cam instead get one of the types the police use like the axion Then just get like a button up shirt and attach it to your shirt
Your second sentence was accurate.
@@Techmoan Did you get any Borg nanoprobes with the camera ?
@@Techmoan 😅
It would be interesting if they were able to add some kind of gyroscopic stabilization to the lens, not only to keep it more steady when moving, but to always keep the image upright, even if your head is titled. I get that would make the price even higher, but that would be an awesome feature :D
you can't gyro stabilize pitch or roll in a lens you have to do that on the sensor which is something that basically only high end moving sensor mirrorlesses do like the sony a7 series
"Bear in mind just one rule in life: Nobody ever wins competitions that they haven't entered." -Techmoan, 2022
Good to see you on my home turf (Conwy and Llandudno) Matt!

Remote is useful for those of us that won't be using the earpiece. Thank you for this review!
When you get the urge to look like The Borg
Be sure to add a laser pointer and a fog generator for full effect!
Oh, Llandudno tramway!! 😍 One of my favourite places in UK.
Can't believe you were driving round about quarter of a mile from my home. I know exactly where a couple of those in-car clips were filmed!
Great video...and that edit/swirly wipe at 16:31 is just sublime! Brilliant!! 🤩
Your intro and outros are amazing.. I don't know who composed this but I really like it.. Thank you
I'd be interested to know whether you would use these head mounted cameras for any of the filming of your review / repair type videos - i.e. close up work on something? I'm considering making videos of some of the work I do, and it never really thought about it before, but maybe a head mounted camera would reduce the need for tripods and constantly moving them when filming alone, without a camera man? I imagine the footage would look too shaky, but that may be a small price to pay if it could massively reduce the time taken to film a job. The hassle of trying to work around tripods and the massive amount of extra time setting up camera angles is one of the main things which has previously put me off. Thanks.
I miss the dash cam style videos, this was nice!
I love Techmoan, he has the courage to go in public with the tech I wish I was using. Also, some people are selling their Verified tick marks now, so you have to make sure the Name is what you're expecting as well.

Great informative Vid, Question/advise please. I need a head camara to take good quality STILL pics at about 40 to 50 cm range.
I measure window revels for blinds etc, and a picture reference would be invaluable on occasion. And would need to shoot via the remote switch secured to my tape measure.
Would these cameras work for this task do you think?

"It mentions that you can shoot vertical video if you've lost your mind." Totally WAS NOT expecting such a savage side comment haha.
Beside sound quality and color saturation problems, was there any solution from manufacturer to workaround moments related to people wearing glasses?
Maybe some auto zoom or replace camera position kit?
Otherwise we might get some sign of it on video like your's sometimes.
And I missed led moment, did camera turn it off for some moment for economy batt and etc?
Would you recommend this for a bouncer? Especially for low light situations?
LOL. RUclips froze on my tv just as you said “now about battery life, not brilliant”. Sat and waited for a bit. Thought it was a joke. 🤣
The voice on the camera cues reminds me of GLaDOS from the Portal series
8:26 ...and infinitely better that panning using 'vertical video' like SO many clueless people do ! :)
Hmm I think the ep7 has better colours, the ep8 looks washed out in comparison but the price is crazy no thanks !
It's sad that you have to add the scam warning at the end, but I appreciate that you did. Thanks Matt.

Matt are you planning to make a video with yout new Smart fortwo?
Oooh, a camera to record me entering the competition - that I never entered! ;)
Great video as ever. This looks great and saves the installation of cables through the interior of the car but I think I'll wait for the EP9 unless the audio issue is resolved via a firmware update.
If you don't need all day recording or you don't need your hands to be free, your phone generally does a much better job. I like the idea of it being a portable dash cam though, as like you, I hardwire mine into my cars. Still have the DrivePro 200 that you recommended many years ago 😁 all I've done is tape a filter to it.
