The Alien Penny Experiment

- Even better version here: • Silver crystals growin...
A copper penny is added to a dish containing silver nitrate. The silver ions react with the copper metal in a single replacement reaction to produce aqueous copper ions and long, beautiful silver crystals.
Edit: I made a better version which also explains what's happening!!!! ruclips.net/video/BnUimmzLejA/видео.html
⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️
Copper metal (from the penny) reacts with silver nitrate in the solution. A single replacement reaction happens, forming silver crystals and copper nitrate in solution!
Cu + 2 AgNO3 ➡️ Cu(NO3)2 + 2 Ag
What is it suspended in? Just distilled water?
Yoooo silver nitrate ain’t cheap. You getting that purified and not reagent grade I hope.

In college (50+ yrs ago) chem lab, me and my buddy placed a penny in a 10 ml beaker + 5 ml conc HNO3 under the hood for 60-70 seconds. Then hit it with a shot of di water to stop the reaction. The penny was then removed, rinsed off and was now the thickness, diameter and weight of a dime. This was then scaled up. The vending machines and pay phones were filled with pennies for a couple months…..
Could I soak in this stuff and come out skinny? And shiny?

The air bubble didn't let the acid through thats pretty neat
It's a displacement reaction. Copper being more reactive than silver displaces the latter out of solution as metallic silver which is seen here to grow as crystals on the copper penny. It's classified as a redox reaction. Later the solution around the penny would turn blue due to formation of copper(II)sulfate
Or nitrate as it looks like he used AgNO3
Correct!
Copper is used in silver refining to leach the pure silver out of silver nitrate solution .

For those of us who are scientifically illiterate but have a curious mind, it would have been nice to hear a description of what is being depicted.
The copper in the coin is more reactive than the silver 'dissolved' in the liquid. The copper then 'dissolves' and the 'dissolved' silver becomes metal crystals (solid metal). That's about as simple as I can explain it.

Coins are generally copper made , you put copper in weak silver acid , copper replaces itself with silver leaving silver deposits . Pretty cool stuff 🙂
so it's basically grows itself in to da silver? 😶
I have seen it already on nilered
Usa penny are zinc
Bullshit. There is no acid. He put silver nitrate AgNO3. Copper is more reactive than silver thus substitutes it and silver forms it's crystals on the coin.

You could have also used copper wiring. This is because water is aqueous and the AgNO3 forms silver precipitates along the edge of the copper. What he didnt show was that at the end, the little pieces of silver on the edges of the penny can actually come off and be dried.

@@ms.pirate You should learn the difference between fiat paper/copper-zinc, etc. currency and actual money with recognized nationwide value. If someone came into a store that you owned with a price of cotton/paper mix that looked like a government note, would you take it? Before you answer with what you think is a sound argument about fist being backed by the government, take a moment to consider the 30-700% inflation we're experiencing band ask yourself who-what that is the result of.
