I just finished watching “Short Poppies” on Amazon Prime and what a hidden gem. I wish I knew about this show back in 2014. Rhys and his town of characters are so hilarious and David as the “interviewer” just completed what was a great comedy duo. The glances David would shoot the camera when something odd was happening was so great.
AMAZING SERIES and I can't believe I forgot to bring it up with him. That's the weird thing about interviewing a friend... you have already covered so much, off mic! I dropped the ball!
@ Understood. It’s not only super cool to be friends with Rhys but the fact his catalog of work is so vast you can’t cover it all in one program. Either way it was a great production. David, I know it’s a stretch (because it wouldn’t fall under the moniker of becoming “more” Americanized), but is there ever a possibility of you doing a Jurassic Park/World episode? I’m also a massively huge fan and with the new film around the corner and, fingers crossed, new game (Jurassic Park: Survival) I’m on what feels like a new wave of JP fandom. The JP Reddit seems to be very alive and well, and having recently gone through the filmography I feel that before these next major releases come to light an episode that focuses on the franchise would be very special and interesting. There are SO many points to cover and what the potential holds for the franchise. Including but not limited to; future movies, streaming television shows (besides cartoons) and games. For instance how many people perused paleontology after the first film, will CRISPR technology eventually bring back a dinosaur, does anyone have a legitimate fear of being eaten off a toilet by a T-Rex… you know… the important stuff. Keep up the great work. You and Rob are an excellent team. And Tuesdays are an eventful day for me. Especially since y’all are doing video now. Hope you and your crew are safe currently and haven’t suffered many or any losses, due to the fires. We need y’all to be around for your positive energy and dry sense of humor.
So excited to hear Tim Batt's voice, I recently came into some extra podcast time and I started listening to TWIOAT, and imagine my surprise when I got to the David Farrier episode and realized everything was connected l. Truly stupendous coincidence really.
I'm glad Calvin (sp?) thinks Rhys Darby is a human 🤣 This was a fun interview! Although a recent publication where Leon made an appearance apparently thinks you're still in The Cryptid Factor sometimes...
Rhys is one of the funniest humans on the planet & it is just effortless & authentic. No-one mentions The Boat that Rocked which is the 1st movie I saw him in - a thoroughly UK show with one Kiwi alongside so many great British actors; loved Short Poppies; he had a hilarious feature in Hunt for the Wilder People with another Kiwi icon Sam Neill; his standup shows are very funny& can be found on RUclips etc; but Cryptid Factor is my favourite as it is ongoing with delightful Rhys gems every show - they did a "live" show (I think while the Edinburgh Fringe Festival was on?) & while someone read out a newspaper report of a possible cryptid incident, Rhys did all the sound effects & I cried laughing, and go back & re-listen if I need a good down to the soles of my feet laugh. Oh, and before the US version of What we do in the Shadows the NZ version was brilliant, including Rhys as a werewolf as David mentioned. Agree with everyone about My Flag Means Death - so good!
Great episode! I remember sitting on the couch in my Mum’s house in Tasmania, watching an episode of thank god you’re here with Rhys and just laughing so hard. I am definitely claiming the flat white for Australia but I’ll give the credit to New Zealand for the Pavlova.
I find that crazy that Australians think they invented the flat white, sorry the flat white and the pavlova are ours you can have Russell Crowe, and Keith Urban.
Can attest to the Googling fiasco. I teach high school English and students do NOT know how to Google. AI isn’t helping. But prompt engineering or just a simple Google search is asking too much.
Great job, guys! I love being able to support this podcast. Keep doing your thing!!!

I have really been enjoying the new video format during the doc segments
I adored Short Poppies. That was definitely my intro to David. 💙💙
'Our Flag Means Death' is a staple of my yearly rotations. My wife and I quote Rhys' (Stede's) lines all the time.

Flight of the Conchords and Our Flag Means Death are classics! So so funny!
Short Poppies was my intro to both David & Rhys. I loved it so much, the comedy hit perfectly.

Love Calvin calling out Zathura as: The Space Jumanji 😂😂😂
This makes me so happy 🖤

Kiwi’s always know other Kiwi’s and it makes me wanna be a Kiwi. 🥝
Dang I guess I've missed out. Never heard of Rhys before.
Bill Murray is basically just himself.
