It's quite a complex topic, but i'll bring in some quotes...
"You see the good in others even when it's not there"
      -Tighten, Megamind
"That (Seeing the world as it is) is a loser's reasoning !"
      -Sosuke Aizen, Bleach
They may be inaccurate, but i hope they bring the points properly
Light simply kills criminals that he views to be unpardonable because somehow, they are still out there, boasting (Like how Junko Furuta's torturers are somehow STILL OUT THERE UNPUNISHED(Unless being a severe NEET counts))...the unfortunate agents are simply in the way of a man with severe superiority complex with a strong sense of justice

I prefer the anime personally because it seems more like Light
All throughout the anime and Manga we see Light perfectly fine with The idea of dying he gives rem permission to kill him if misa isn't saved and also in the beginning of the anime, he makes a comment to ryuk Saying it's either I get executed or I deal with a house fire showing that he's aware he will be executed if he's caught the main thing that I like about The anime ending is that his follower kills himself. In order for light to escape and light ends up going into a quiet place, probably knowing that Ryuk is going to kill him and he goes out in silence it just seems more like Light.

I mean, you see him with all this composture when he has things under his control. What I saw was a coward who view himself as superior than everyone, and developed/nurtured this superiority/god complex when he accidentaly got access to otherworldly powers. You can see how he value his life over others in the way he uses Misa like a pawn, he didnt struck the eye deal himself and put her life on the line to get L. Despite claiming to be the best on that battle of wits with L, you see how he was actually outmatched and scared when he makes his first mistake, and how much trouble he got while having access to supernatural powers.
And at the end of the day, it was all a facade, that so calm, fearless, godly and self righteous man, was, at the end of it, just a man. Light's hubris may be the reason Ryuk found his jouney amusing.

The movie has it like this but instead of near, it was L.
In the movie, L pre-wrote his name in the deathnote so he would fool Light into thinking he died. L faked his heart attack and Light fell for it confessing he is Kira.
It cuts to Light being cornered by everyone and L at the top of the stairs explaining he pre-wrote his name.
Then Ryuk wrote Light in the death note

Sorry, but you can't beat the part of the anime ending where light runs by himself as a highschool student. He sees his unsuspecting younger self casually walking back towards the warehouse he fled from, approaching his death without a clue. As the present light is desperately running away from his fate, I can only imagine he sees his younger innocent self and wonders "how did he become this?"
Light was a brilliant student with a strong moral compass. If he had conquered his pride, he likely would have had a bright future ahead of him where he could have contributed greatly to the world. Instead, he took the innocence of himself and the world and transformed it into ruin.

The author may pull weird series themes, but he ends it, imo, in a very fitting to the setting way. Like in platina end, the way that everything dies, then potentially resets, seems appropriate cause being introduced to such morbid and dark characters who were chosen to be god candidates right after facing death under different circumstances seems like a literal game of picking poisons not knowing what would happen next under a being with a touch of that dark humanity

Its funny because this was probably my second or third anime ever, and when I was very young, I idolized Light and was on Team Kira for "doing what needs to be done to make the world better for good people". I was looking through the lens of a child who had been victimized by evil before. Now that I am an adult, I see how messed up Light was, and I have completely different beliefs about how to handle crime. No real point to my comment here... It's just fascinating to me to observe. I rewatch this anime about once a year; solid storytelling for sure. It's definitely a top favorite of mine. When my GFs kid is a little older, I hope to watch it with her, too.

    -Tighten, Megamind
"That (Seeing the world as it is) is a loser's reasoning !"
    -Sosuke Aizen, Bleach

Light simply kills criminals that he views to be unpardonable because somehow, they are still out there, boasting (Like how Junko Furuta's torturers are somehow STILL OUT THERE UNPUNISHED (Unless being a severe NEET counts))...the unfortunate agents are simply in the way of a man with severe superiority complex with a strong sense of justice

That makes the double black pages even sweeter as it is literally where Light ends up, where everyone he's ever killed or used till they died ended up. Just a black void of nothing. The final two rules of the Death Note: "All humans will, without exception, eventually die. / After they die, the place they go is Mu (nothingness)"
