- The Clash. "Should I Stay or Should I Go. (skip to 1:25 to start) The bass line plays an important role in this song. In the verse, Paul's line helps the song to swing and groove in the slower tempo, while in the chorus his high runs bring an energy that the guitars can't bring on their own. Distortion on the bass is the icing on the cake. There is an isolated bass track here: • Clash - Should I Stay ...

This song introduced me to punk rock. I listened to nothing else for the next 6 years straight. Thank you for addressing the distortion.
The Clash are just fantastic! My favourite band of all time
Yeah they were so different and cool and trendsetting. There was no band like them before, or since..
Love it. Great song and great bass line. I hadn’t picked up that the bass is distorted - nice touch!
Great job. One of the best Clash songs.
Thanks Mark.. I agree. Love that he had distortion all over his bass too
Excellent song!!!
Thanks Debbie. And the new haircut rocks btw
Murphy Karges thanks! 🤙🏼
Rocking the house at 6:30am. Thanks Murphy!
Deb Sisson glad to be of service.. and thanks for the support !
Sounds Awesome!!!!!!
Thanks Jake.. I spend a pretty good amount of time trying to get the sound balanced so that you can hear both the song, and my bass and the difference between. It's not easy, but comments like yours make me feel stoked to be doing it. Appreciate it.
Murphy Karges I appreciate you dedicating your time to help all of us ... just to mention , I have trouble with a lot of Jeff Ament and Ben Shepard songs .. Pearl Jam - porch and SoundGarden - My wave , outshined ... id just like to see you play them so I can see the technique of those songs
Awesome dude!
Thank you. Two years later. lol.
@@BassWithMurf You’re welcome
awesome man.. do bankrobber next time! and other reggae bass lines like from the specials
the shuriken that’s a good idea.. I am going to do more Clash songs.. you’re right about The Specials.. they have some solid choices. Thanks
I think The first Clash album is the best
That's a great record. But for me, I can't veer away from London Calling. Just so much of my childhood is wrapped up in those songs.. Brilliant record!
@@BassWithMurf That Record is awesome as well. One of the reasons I started collecting records in the first place. Deftones sounds amazing on Vinyl
Awesome Murph!. I've played along with that track on guitar a gazillion times and without that bass line it really lacks. A bit off topic but, I started noticing an underlying island sound, if you will, after 14:59. Which I love and really came out in later songs. Was that from you and Stan noodling or were they group sessions?.
Good question. I think that some of the more songwriter/quieter harmonies and ideas and riffs and stuff just started coming out naturally at that time.. when you make recordings and then look back, bands often go from being heavier to lighter, then back to heavy then maybe somewhere else after that.. it's natural to just sort of wander.. and Stan and Rod grew up on The Beach Boys, and they were a big influence on them.. but you can't tell that with "Mean Machine" so when the time came.. some of those instincts just flow out.. But I would say, after all Sugar Ray has done.. it would be time for a hard album again. I don't care if you're getting older.. you could still make some great rock songs.. but yeah I hope that answered your question..
@@BassWithMurf, Totally. Change is inevitable and you guys did it better than anyone. It would be great to hear an album going a bit heavier and just with your guys ability to go hard and fast but still maintain a structure with melodic hooks would be killer to see what would culminate after all of the years of experience. Thanks Murphy!.
Paul Simonon for the winonon.
"The genius is that it's not pristine." Yes yes yes! I hate it when a piece of music is so polished and pitch-corrected and quantized that it doesn't feel like it was made by human beings. I can't even listen to the radio today, because that's the vibe I get from everything. I want music to be living and breathing, not robotic. Sorry for the rant.
I'm with you. Human feel is a good thing. I think some artists have it today. But yes, too many productions over-qauntize everything.. putting every beat on every line, and auto correcting the pitch and just taking the life out of a lot of music
What’s the name of the bass you are playing? it looks really nice
G&L SB-2
