      This is dumb. Everything these clay pipes do (provide surface for evaporative cooling) can be done 10 times better by same size aspen shavings cooling pad. It's more natural, involves no combustion or labour and is far more cheaper.

    This design isn't a new concept. It's elementary passive cooling. Thanks for posting this, perhaps more people will start to understand that simplicity is almost always better.

      It works great if the humidity is low to begin with...but if the humidity is 80 or 90 percent to begin with its useless.

    Design is same as honey comb structure used in chiller,cooling tower .if the diameter of tube is reduced to 1/2 inch it will be more effective and can reduce your temperature to a great extent.i have also seen some African village use plastic bottle to cool their rooom,designer can take reference of that design and try it.good luck guys

    Very interesting idea. There is another observation about natural cooling. These tubes seem to be the same diameter, end to end. But when air is compressed, it becomes cooler. A larger intake on the end from where the hot air originates and a narrower diameter on the other, cools air that blows through or is forced through it because the air is compressed. This is used in some areas of Africa by inserting bottles into the walls, the larger diameter facing the outside of the structure and the neck, facing the inside. Pretty cool 😊

      When air is compressed, the air's pressure and temperature increase as the volume of the space containing air decreases. By pushing air into a smaller space, we force it to become hotter and more pressurized

      Just consider the equation of equilibrium of a gas PV=nRT
      If the pressure P increases, but the volume V stays the same, since n and R are constants it mean the temperature T increases

    Team ANT STUDIO, a common knowledge in yoga is, if you blow air with open mouth on your palm, it will feel warm, but if you pucker you’re lips like blowing a candle and blow into your palm, the air will be cool. Using this knowledge I wonder if you could widen the pot on the end where hot air comes from, and narrow the other end to a smaller hole, it might change the dynamics even more. Agha Khan hospital in Karachi uses this concept of Jaalis made out of concrete, called Jeffries, the temperature is remarkably cool on the inside passages . Most Islamic architecture and ancient temples use this concept. Old house in the deserts use the same narrow in,ets for air to cool the air inside. You guys are amazing!

    The environment stress caused due to AC's is huge and it will have adverse effect on us in near future. Kudos to these guys at Ant Sudios who're working on this, I hope you get a great success and in success of projects like this relies the future of our planet

      @@alexandergilbert1023 CFC have been banned for over 45 years in 95% of the world. So again what environment stress do AC's cause? The natural cooler does not work in most hot places in the world due to high humidity.

      However, most climate change is not caused directly by consumers, but rather by industrial corporations that waste vast amounts of resources in order to streamline prophits to present their investors with the illusion of infinite growth.

    In our old home, approximately 25 years back.... Before sleeping we used to sprinkle water on the floor, and the pardahs were of very very thin cloth which would drench with water. So the room used to become cool with fan helping as well.
    Now we got A/C. Old problem new solution. Hopefully you guys get a break through.

    It is interesting that the designer says "we always look towards the WEST for good ideas to do things wisely." Or something like that he said. Personally, I always look at what the people from INDIA are doing if I want to get ideas that are the MOST INNOVATIVE and LEAST COSTLY. Here in the west, our goal is most often to make MONEY MONEY MONEY.... without much regard for cost efficiency. So... my point is.... be proud of what the India people are accomplishing. Your ideas are often times better than ours.

    Not feasible, all the coastal city Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata etc have humidity > 80%, it wont work there.
    Solution is already in front of everyone - Grow trees, use that clay to fertilize them and water to irrigate them.
    A tree reduces the temp more than this pots. There are Eco-Office spaces already adapting them.
    Also the space it take is huge and have very limited direct use cases, but best of luck.

    it can perform well.
    Water circulation is possible only through the pump. And if the falling water is circulated through an underground tank, the temperature can certainly be reduced

    soil, water, wood, are natural and cool itself to remove heat... wood does both the jobs, in Winter it warms the house, in summer it cools the house without spending any xtra penny...

      @@indiegenre9333 the culture of age old techniques of using leaf plates, khadi cotton n bamboo clothes, traditional ayurvedic medicines, in short overall living of a human should be in sync with nature(such as in our villages we still follow couple of age old things.. cow dung floors, clay houses, clay roof top,) and using traditional ways to increase cooling. Using earthen pots for water storage and tea / coffee /water consumption. It's not long ago that we had clay pots in all stations for tea coffee suddenly plastic replaced every thing and now again govt has banned plastic but it will take time.we have choosen convienece for ourselves which is causing harm to planet and us. The sir quality is going down, the land n sea is full of plastics and clothes that don't decay. We all need to act now afterall its our home, we all belong to earth. Planet doesn't belong to a religion or race, as humans we have captured it so we all must protect ourselves and our planet. We are suppose to be guardians not destroyers. We are killing ourselves and trying to look new life on new planets to settle down in future that's so ridiculous. First we must take ownership and act responsibly. 🙏😊.

    Please add a "Part 2" that discusses water sources/input & output while conserving water. Ex: closed circulating systems, passive to active pumping spectrum, vs harvesting new water from air etc.. Ways to cool the water for reuse are plentiful, but info about diy using primitive/cheap/accessible materials takes more ingenuity for the teacher to navigate "market driven" platforms such that getting knowledge like this into the hands of the average individual can support the time & effort of folks who teach things like you have here. Ty. Keep up the good work 👍

    I stopped using the cooling part of the air-con years ago, I open up the house during the summer and only run the fan now, since doing this the house has become cooler by just moving the air around but not cooling it. Now when walking past the outlet there is no heat coming from it.
    The Summer temps where I live can reach over 50°c during the hight of summer, I have also adopted the Spanish way of living by having a nap at the peek of the heat once past that point it starts cooling down enough that I can go back out side and do more Gardning or more work inside.
    I like the idea of the water over the tiles, this would work for my home by having one at the back of the house and one at the front, it will have the added benefit of the water being a natural sound barrier to road noise and just many from the next door neighbour who just can not talk softly when on the phone, I can hear her even when I’m in the back yard and the house is between us😳😳

    I feel much comfort in my Adobe house, and i am planning to construct one for myself. People who came to know about my plan, they said your wife will leave you for always.😆

    Questions this video should have answered:
    1) How does the honeycomb method compare with bamboo-shoot based coolers, which also use evaporative cooling?
    2) More explanation on how air-conditioners make the microsystem worse. Keeping the window open also performs transfer of heat. The only difference is that air conditioners use energy to do so. But that is a factor at the macro level - not micro.

    Try joining an air pipe that goes via all the 800 mud pieces 1by 1..then carry hot 🔥 air to the next adjoining mud pipe (throwing the air on mud base.. cooling it) Repeating this process 800 times. The air that'll come out will be stone cold ❄ . An interconnected web pipe of 800 wet mud pipe/structure. Just make sure air doesn't pass through the hollow mud pipe. It should BANG on 1 or both walls preferably. You'll figure it out.

    Evaporative Coolers have been around FOREVER. The US sold them as "Humidifiers" many ages ago. They work well... up until the Air becomes fully saturated with Moisture. At that point, they no longer can Cool... because the air wont accept any more moisture. The idea that you could just make a boatload of waterfalls to cool everyone down... also presents its own Eco issues... as that can lead to massive weather changes... in which the areas get so saturated with moisture, that it causes massive flooding in various other areas, when it rains all of that moisture back down to Earth.
    The best Eco solution, is not to scrap the AC units.. but instead, to increase the Insulation properties of every building... because most Heating and Cooling are LOST, due to Thermals Leaking. Thicker insulated walls + insulated ceilings. Much thicker Glass windows to prevent conductive losses (and making things much quieter to boot). As well as putting the masses of Apartments, and businesses, Under Ground, where the temps are Naturally much cooler, and much more Stable. (This could also solve issues with having to Plowing and shovel Snow). It would also prevent issues of degradation of cars Rusting, to the salted roads.
    This would also allow for larger scale farming, and various kinds of green parks, on the surface.

      Ananya Gaur you think ACs cause global warming? If an ACs outdoor unit is producing heat then the indoor unit is cooling it too. Automobiles and fossil fuels cause more global warming than all the others combined.

      @@VishnuNairsprofile cause Refrigerant is not toxic unless it's burned then it becomes phosgene gas. Similar to mustard gas. It was responsible for 85% of chemical-weapons fatalities during World War I. As for it being leaked into your living space, the average AC doesn't contain enough refrigerant to cause any harm. The gas itself is not toxic.

    Great video but I would have appreciated a detailed explanation of how the beehive pattern works, not just an overview.

    This works on the same principle as ollas, which are Peruvian/Inca clay pots used to cool the ambient air. Because they were sun dried, the clay contains many tiny pores. When water is put in the pots, it slowly oozes out of those pores and coats the outside of the pot in many tiny waterdrops, which then evaporize and take away the ambient hear. They are hung from ropes, usually from the rafters of overhanging roofs on porches. The ollas, the shadow of the porch and the breeze will cool the air down significantly.
    This clay pipe hive system is clever. Simple. Like ollas. I see a simple addition to this system that could markedly improve it's performance though: Now, it's just a bundle of straight, clay tubes. If you put a twist in them, turning them into a bundle of spiraling clay tubes, the hot air passing through them would come into contact with the walls of the clay tube much more often and for much longer. That would significantly increase the cooling effect of this system. Just that twist.

    As an airconditioner installer, an air conditioner doesn't take the warm heat of the room and blow it outside. It recirculate the air through copper pipes that are filled with cold gasses making the air that goes through it a lot more colder. This cold gass gets could because of expanding. Once expanded it goes towards outside unit and gets compressed back into liquid state. The compression of this gas causes heat and that's the heat what the outside unit blows. So in other words when the gass gets expanded from liquid compressed state into gas form it gets cold. When compressed from gass form to liquid it gets hot. In Holland our AC's also heats the room in the winter by just reversing this process.

      It doesn't literally blow outside. But essentially the heat energy is absorbed by the refrigerant and then transferred out to the outside air via the evaporating coil in the ODU. That's what he meant . Essentially we are removing heat energy from indoors and giving it off to the outdoors.

    Inevitably, the by-product of evaporative cooling is water vapour, which is the gas that have the highest greenhouse effect. This is a Jugaad, and will impact nature more, but, cost wise, perhaps less costlier than air conditioner..

    Fascinating idea. Desert coolers are an example too, but use electricity which fails the purpose. Brilliant observation of how ants build.     It is old. In the Caribbean, it is called decorative blocks. The clay blocks had the openings at a down angle so it blocked the view from out side.

    In the middle east I think they use a wet pad and a fan to pull hot air through the pad. It is more energy efficient than modern a/c.

    Technically any heat transfer system you use will heat up the air outside. With a more "passive" system that uses both physics and nature's own balanced cycles, the heat transfer becomes more sustainable than a phase change system can

    I've been also keen interested in evaporative cooling and how our daily life cooler works and attended many conferences. What i've learned that evaporative cooler works well to reduce the temp but in all the designs air comes in contact with water droplets directly in mid air which increases the humidity higher than what it should be for our skin and that is also a major challenge in evaporative cooler

    These evaporative coolers would work only in dry climates.
    However in a dry climate these bee hive air coolers could be used with wind catchers.

      What do you think about the pottery being egg shape with holes on each end ,that way water can go through them as well as hanging but also adding charcoal in between each strand ? If you can look at green shoots video..keeping crops cool..all this with using the air flow you mentioned.

    Air conditioning contribute greatly to urban heat island. The best way to use this kind of evaporative cooler is first to make all big building use central cooling, not unit. It is more efficient, and this method can be implemented more efficiently.

    This will only be useful when it is not humid.
    Also, how is this different from those "desert coolers" we had at home, where there was a box made out of "khas sheets" and a small motor to drench them with water and a fan to blow air past them? They used to work great during the hot, dry part of Delhi summers, but not at all once the monsoons arrived...

    Bro what if the pots are spiral like pipes(create more turbulence) rather cylindrical(more pots with smaller radius even helps more) then there will be more surface contact.... May give good results...... Don't get my ideas wrong... I just wanted to write.... Between great work buddy

    I don't believe in Man Made Global Climate change, however I do believe in Micro Climate change though in cities etc. I was looking at all those tall buildings with narrow streets. This cooling system should be put at intervals in these passages to help cool the air coming out of the AC units as well as some shade tarps to help cool the buildings so less AC is needed. Also larger units on the roof tops with shade tarps over them may also help cool the building tops and make them require less AC. Geothermal is also an idea if a river is near by that could provide cool water to the heat exchanges. Also instead of having several units in the windows try using large units on the roof to cool several rooms at once. A double heat exchanger might work. One that uses the water and air to cool a coil with Glycol in it that is pumped into the buildings instead of the moist air, which causes mold. Anyways just some thoughts. Thanks for sharing.     Also you see videos where they use cut bottle tops same arrangement but the air passing through using the bottle neck pressure to act as a natural compressor to dissipate heat. Just like refrigerator compressors work.

    This is like a swamp cooler used in the low humidity area, but the swamp cooler uses a electric fan to force the into the building. The swamp cooler is more efficient than a air conditioner and produses lest heat.

    It is time we understand that water is a much more valuable commodity than electricity. There are plenty of renewable energy sources but fresh water supply is limited. If you really want to save some energy, just go for rooftop solar or something.

      As Umesh pointed out, most of the water is evaporated. It is similar to a desert cooler where the cooling is dependent on water evaporation.

      India received 958mm of rainfall this year, thats more than 6000 litre of water per person per day for whole of the year, so I wouldn't call India has scarcity of water, what we need is awareness to conserve and sensible use of water

    I am curious what this method of cooling does to ambient humidity. Water in the air contributes to the perception of heat discomfort. Where does the honeycomb system discharge the heat, since energy doesn't disappear?

    Neat project. I'm a big fan of passive systems. I think it's too humid here for these to work effectively. Also, if it was 67°F, I'd be thinking about turning the heat on, not cooling off more. 😅 The typical a/c around here is about 10 degrees warmer, and they're mostly run for dehumidifier purposes. Definitely a neat aesthetic though.
