I have been learning badminton with a coach passively for 10 lessons. Now I follow another coach for another 10 lessons and start to learn proactively. I don't know what to say to thank your videos. I have watched maybe 5 videos and I think it's quite comprehensive for a begginer and easy to understand. I watch and try practicing in front of the computer. I have been learning a lot and your video really accelerates my learning. Thank you Germany pro player, I will remember your name 👍.
So happy to hear, that the videos make a difference and I am very happy to help! All the best for your badminton journey and kind regards from Germany!
A few months on and rewatching it the amazing details now reveal themselves to me which I missed before and I learned a few more things. Watch this and other videos a hundred times...
Wow..I heard all these before but not all together in one place AND a sensible way to decide which method is optimal for which situation...well done and a million thanks.
Another awesome video Coach Tobias, love the key point that everyone's transportation style varies depending on your height and situation. Often we try to apply the one style fits all. Finding the method that fits each individual is optimum. You present all of the options and it is up to us to choose the best technique. Great drills to increase speed and save energy. Thanks.
Absolutely. You make so much of sence at the fact we must change a lot of ways of footwork. Evey one in the youtube stuff only say few kind of things which are miss leading.
Wow! This is the kind of footwork tutorials that I have been looking to, because all footwork channels just teach the basic 6 corners. This footwork video has so much depth. Please do part 3, I think there is still a lot that you not cover yet for example the double hop technique for the backhand footwork (I think this footwork is used if you are very near to the net and you need to go to the backcourt. Thank you very much!
Sehr hilfreich. Watch your video a lot to build up my fundamental in badminton. I played recreationally twice a week and feel my development come to a stand still. Luckily found your video ans my game improved a lot. Gruße aus Malaysia.
as usual very nice tutorial, especially the hopping. I was observing LCW take backhand corner clears with the left foot hop at the beginning. This corner is always a weakness and I m currently trying to get to it fast, place properly and then quickly reposition myself back for the next shot. The problem is that I m burning so much energy. It has to be my faulty shot placement/footwork technique. I am learning that based on your opponent position, shot placement and your current momentum (retrieving from off position), there is a lot of footwork issues. Unlike me doing sudden jerky footwork, a smoother body flow will definitely conserve energy. I hope u get what I m saying.
can you do a video on mid-court drives. My question is more on the forehand drive as it's not natural and it's hard to hit it straight and with power without hitting the net.
Firstly, best informative yet concise badminton tutorials on RUclips. Brilliant work. One question: When I play a net shot I wait at the net, right foot forward ready to play the next net shot or a knock off. Watching Viktor Axelson, he will sometimes do a quick switch to left leg forward ready to move away then may have to switch his feet back to play another net. Why? Anticipation to get early on a lift? When will he choose the right time to do this and when not to? Thanks and keep them coming👍🏻
Thank you! Yes it is about anticpating as you say because Viktor has a huge chance of scoring if he has a good position in the rearcourt. Besides that I think it can also mess up the decision making of an opponent. Viktor for example sometimes turns quite early so the opponent can see that but in many cases has a hard time to react to that and that can decrease the quality in that shot.
Per demonstration here, on the rear forehand corner, there are two types of movement, sidestep or cross step. May I ask what kind of situation warrants for each of the two? When it's a slow high lift, side step and when it's a fast flatter ball, cross step? Is this correct?
The most important factor for fast court movements is a strong core to stabilise your body as you move around/change directions. The rest comes after that. I find it surprising that so many coaches don't point this out.
Hi, a great video. I have the most trouble reaching the backhand rearcourt in time and it is the hardest corner to hit for me (I want to hit a strong around the head shot). Is there any way to get there fast without the hop move?
Good question. Especially tall players tend to have problems to turn and do the hop fast enough. Maybe try to do more like a cross behind with your dominant foot followed by a scissor jump instead of turining the hip and doing the hop step.
Tobias, what exercise should we do to increase the distance coverage on a hop step? Cause when we change direction 180° turn of our body, distance coverage through a hop jump becomes crucial to keep the shuttle ahead of our body. Should we keep our knee bend while turning our body ? Please help.
A big jump also means longer time in the air and that can also cost time so I would't try to maximize the lenght of the jump too much. Try also to be able to turn quick and add a chasse if needed, that can be the faster option.
Short junior players have to use a lot of running steps but there are also situations, when a extra chasse makes sense. It always depends on the situation and the space you have to cover. For juniors it is so important to learn different movement patterns, and I think it would be awesome if juniors could play on smaller courts and with a lower net.
Asian coaches don't recommend running steps when trying to go from back to net quickly. They tell players to do the LiMao step instead. Because running steps affect the recovery.
Backhand gives you less options and less power so you should always try to use footwork that allows forehand shots, but of course sometimes you have to use backhand
It’s still not clear to me how to go from a split step parallel to the net and then how to change directions the most efficiently to go to the four corners. Say I’m expecting a smash and then get a clear behind me. Please cover changing directions efficiently, thank you!
Coach, When i play the matches.. I can feel my legs are stiff and tension in legs ... While I can see many players footwork is butter smooth... How to be like that??? Any Tips??
I think you should try to work on you rhythm so try to start explosive but than slow down and relay during the approach and land as smooth and quite as possible when you get to a corner. Noise is always a good indicator on how smooth your footwork is. Try to practice different running and jumping styles with focus on quite and soft landings
Can you make a video how to do attacking cross-court slice drops? That it looks like straight drive/smash but you slice it with angled racket head and with lot of pronation. Like Shi Yuqi is using in this video ruclips.net/video/-IQJjYz_QE0/видео.html&frags=pl%2Cwn
Wow that is a huge compliment to get compared to such a player, thank you =) But I have to admit that there is still a long way for me to get to his technical skills :P

One of the best and most detailed footwork tutorials on the net. Thank you!
I would love to see a part 3 where you show some more specific footwork patterns people can practice.
Hi. Part 3 will again be more general about landing techniques and recovery but then i will go in detail on the specific techniques in the corner :)
You are the best badminton coach I ever seen.

I've watched Lin Dan's footwork. His footwork is by far the most energy efficient!

Would love to see some content on doubles tactics as well. GREAT JOB COACH
I will definitly do that but I have to find time and enough players for shooting videos for that because i don't want to make it to "heoretical

Buddy i am 5.2 foot can you tell me how to smash
Why u turn ur body to the side while covering the left rear court instead of keeping it straight forward towards the net to execute the shot
You can do both but more turning allows you to hit with more power. Less turning gives you more control and it takes less time
Why so many lines are drawn on court?
