    Fast forward 50 years to 2068 and St. Helena will have tacky casinos, a football stadium, and will be an offshore haven for laundering money. I sincerely hope to God it doesnt happen to such a nice litte island, but history shows when money and greed are involved everything trns to crap.

    How will Saints be able to import things like fridges and cars, now that the RMS has gone?

    • @mac7608
      @mac7608 5 лет назад +4

      Vivienne hart The St Helena government has charted a cargo vessel which sails from Cape Town to St Helena then on to Ascension Island. As one can imagine this has a big impact on the island’s economy and for the islanders themselves, cost on imports has increased dramatically and since the retirement of the RMS many islanders will say things has rapidly gone down hill. Having an airport is a way forward in today’s modern world but there are certain aspects that cannot replace the time tested and trialled legacy of the RMS, especially for an island so isolated. I have recently visited the island and there is definitely a dramatic change from when I was growing up - I only hope that the island and people will prosper from this in the future.

      @@mac7608 I loved my stay - twice - on the island, 1st time stayed with a lady, Peggy, up below High Knoll, 2nd time in a flat above Eve's Shop, at the top of Main St. I loved the Saints, so friendly & welcoming, even the youngsters. Plus the voyage on the RMS was so relaxed, I hate the huge cruise liners, like floating blocks of apartments, not my scene! Do the Saints still have their 'Cubic Metre'?

      Vivienne hart - Hi, glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. As you know for yourself St. Helena is a very relaxed place and have a lot to offer if people/visitors take the time to talk to locals - hopefully with our friendly nature it will make everyone feel welcomed 🙂 Yes, we really miss the RMS a great experience for many - she’s living a better and more glamorous life now though with the Formula E racing CEO purchasing recently, it will be converted into a eco vessel that transports the Formula E cars around the world whiles maintaining some of its heritage linked to the island and promoting clean energy, there’s a video on RUclips about it, very interesting, you should view when you have time. As for the cubic meter I think all this has changed with the new charted vessel. I left St. Helena in my youth so I’m a little out of touch with things back home -- I visited last year after 9yrs, a lot has changed for better and worst but I still hope to return one day and retire.

      @@mac7608 Any relation to Mia, or Derrin Henry? With the recent hotels and expansion of bed and breakfast venues being developed prior to covid, has there been any talk about some version of a Saint Helena Grand Prix with smaller vehicles? I got the idea watching a video showing the Airport Hall road from Ruperts to the Airport and I thought to myself aha, that would be a great annual event to bring in revenue to the island. The race would be a great skill test for race car drivers because of the large number of hair pin curves and the hilly terrain. Also, now that the undersea fiber link will eventually be connected, the whole world would be able to watch. bringing in additional revenue to SHG for the media rights.
