Many Indians mostly Punjabis go to USA illegally through Panama route, that's why the immigration was strict in each border. Several instances of them getting caught in Central America have been reported in the past. That's why they grilled you i think.
Apart from this naanum niraya azhudutukken , everytime in customs in Guatemala they will throw the tuvar dal and urad dal , masalas ( Indian groceries are impossible and hard to get there so i bring from India Every year) , i will cry and cry and tell them this is going to be my food for the family for next one year being vegetarian we cant survive in this land etc etc. But avanungalukku puriyaradhu romba kashtam...very slow in working also ..
Hopefully in costarica it will be a smooth entry since many tourists come from USA and it's a commercial place
