I remember watching Akira for the first time a few years ago and I came out of it with an overall net positive view. The movie is a feast for the eyes and a technical marvel. That said, similar to the points you made in your video, I was somewhat put off by the lack of narrative focus and the rushed plot of the second half of the movie. After watching the movie, I took the time to research and discovered the original manga would've required like 3 full length movies to tell the story properly and the strange motifs that seemingly went nowhere in the movie were apparently fully fleshed moments in the manga. With that in mind, I still consider Akira to be a classic, especially considering Japanese story telling generally tends to follow more emotional beats rather than more rigid Western ones.

i saw akira in highschool in the 90s and was so into it but didn't really understand it. after reading the manga so much more of it made sense and i love both pieces so much. really wish some of his older works would get a translation besides just domu. domu is also sick, tho :D great vid and great music!

I saw Akira as a kid in the late 80s, I didn’t get it at all, but I loved it and watched it over and over. I’m not sure I get it now after all this time, but I don’t think that even matters to me

great vid with great editing and music! Akira is not only one of my favorite films, but also favorite adaptations BECAUSE it doesn't follow the book exactly. It offers a lot of new stuff too, and is structured pretty well for a two hour film.

True, I watched the film first it's overwhelming but it made hunger for more especially when they showed images and clips of "Akira" himself. I wanted to know why he was 'stored' that way and I ended up reading the manga in one whole day. I gotta say the manga clearly explained everything in detail compared to the movie.

I'm just thinking you aren't that bright. The movie makes perfect sense.
Me thinks you watched the weird English dub with the distractingly bad voice acting and mistranslated lines in several places.
But I've seen that one. Still pretty basic.
Dude gets psychic powers from some unnamed strange source and goes crazy on what I can only assume is a botched ascension to godhood.
    Rushed plot? Sure. Still cohesive.
I promise you, I wouldn't have spent the money on a VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray version of this movie if it didn't make sense.
Bad plots can ruin a movie, no matter how beautiful the animation is.
    I don't buy bad plots.
    You just don't get it.
