Is it safe to use a Fetal Doppler at home?

  • Fetal Dopplers are relatively inexpensive and sound like a good idea to pregnant mothers who want some peace of mind in between appointments, but they can actually do the opposite, and cause more harm than good. Even trained nurses and doctors have to sometimes try for minutes before finding a fetal heart rate with a Doppler. And if you're doing this at home, it can cause great alarm and anxiety. In addition, and untrained person doesn't know what a normal fetal heart rate is, and so if they find the mother's heart rate (which is going to be slower than the fetal heart rate), they might freak out and be really upset, and in reality, it could just be normal and they never found the baby's heart rate. Or someone might find the fetal heart rate, and it would be slower, and they would interpret that as the mother's heart rate (if they knew about that), and ignore a problem if there was one.
    So really, it's best to just call your doctor if you're concerned in between appointments. Let them know about why your concerned, and they'll bring you into the office, and a trained person (either a doctor or a nurse) can try to find the heart rate. And based on what they find, they'll be able to interpret the results, and determine if everything is fine, and you can be reassured, or if further investigation and monitoring is warranted. If you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.

    Ok but is it SAFE?! Jesus Christ--a very simple question. Most moms will realize if there is a problem to go in, we have the dopplers to reassure us, the directions are simple to understand and use. The question is whether or not the device is safe for home use and you never answered it. Thanks for wasting my time! 👎🏼

    Hi everyone! Both, my nurse and my OB said it's totally safe to use at home. Their only concern is for nervious moms who stress themselves out because they're unable to find a heartbeat and begin panicking. Babies move around and sometimes theyre laying in a way that blocks the sound of their heartbeat. That's when moms start to panic and cause themselves unnecessary stress. They also don't want you to self diagnose at home. If you feel like there is something wrong, immediately call your OB, don't rely on the baby doppler. Other than that, they both told me to have fun with it. Hope this helps.

    She did not give a great argument on why a doppler should not be used. She did not say that it will do harm to the baby or it will cause a miscarriage or cause any birth defects. 😒I think this video was useless and a way to make the doctors more and more 💰. I am buying me a doppler to insure me that my kid is doing good. I think that was the best device that was put on the market😍.

    Okay, answering the question everyone wants to know, yes they are safe only if you use them got a maximum of 10 minutes once a week or 5 minutes 2 times a week. If you keep the fetal doppler in the same spot over your baby for too long that is when it becomes unsafe. Whether if a professional is doing it or you are. Dopplers let off heat (radiational heat) which can either cause stunt growth to your baby or cause the sack that the baby grows in to blister which can also cause health complications to your baby. These circumstances are very rare. But can still happen. Like I said these sorts of things will only happen if you use it too often for too long. Not a short period of time over the cause of a couple days. But it's always best to have a break. And yes I know it will be hard. Believe I know I have one myself and I'm 14 week and 1 day. So I know it's hard. But you must akwyas take precautions regardless.
    I hope this answered many of your questions 😊

      Fetal Dopplers do not use radiation. They use sound waves to find a heartbeat. They machine itself will get hot if used over a prolonged period of time, as long as you are aware of that and stop using it when you feel it get warm, you should be fine. But there is no (radiational heat).

    I believe they are safe. Everyone at home should take into consideration that thier not trained professionals. At the same time though it sounds like they're worried about losing money. If we can do at home what they do in the office thier not needed anymore.

  • @andromedalove
    @andromedalove 5 лет назад +12

    Okay but she didn't say that using it harms the baby. She just explained how user error can either have the mom to worry or can reassure the mom when something can still be wrong. So in other words. The device does not hurt the baby. Period.

    • @phelou9620

      They shouldn't be telling you to sit and wait. That is medical negligence on you and your unborn baby. They are probably thinking it could be just a period. You can however have periods during pregnant at any point throughout. Although they still should have done a checkup as precautionary messures. I would ask for a second opinion or even a third if you have to

    I think what we were wanting to know is if the sound waves these devices emit are safe to the developing baby. Home units are never a substitution for actual medical-grade equipment and trained personnel operating them. But from an entertainment perspective, is using the device to check on baby from time to time and saving a recording of the heartbeat safe?

      Yeah. I think they are ignoring a whole group of people.. many like me wouldn’t use it to diagnose. I just want the joy of hearing a heartbeat. Tbh, if something was wrong with the heart, I wouldn’t know regardless because we can’t hear or detect heart rate… and since we can only hear it during appointments anyways why would it matter if we missed that the rhythms was off….. if movement slows or you feel pain, you should go in regardless of heartbeat.

    You weirdos freaking out in the comments... the video is called “is it safe to use at home” we already know they’re safe in general, otherwise the doctors wouldn’t use them, so she’s giving you the cons and reasons why it might not be a good idea to use them at home. With some of your angry and aggressive comments, I would def say it wouldn’t be safe for you to use them at home cuz you’d probably flip your lids and beat someone if you couldn’t find the baby’s heartbeat.

    • @phelou9620
      @phelou9620 2 года назад +4

      Okay I've send 3 comments by you. And replied to every single one. And fetal doppler whether being used by a professional or using a home one they let off heat. Radiation heat to be exact. And yes using to it too often for too long can result in harm to your baby. Such as stunt growth or the sack that it grows in blistering because of the heat it radiates. So no do not blame the women for wanting to know the truth because a lot of website are giving a lot of mixed answers. So whether a professional uses one or a women uses one at home it is dangerous either way. So before you start calling us "freaks" how about you sit down and do your research first. Or here is something better. Shut up and let us women worry if we have to because our questions aren't being answered. Facts!!

      hi, dear you do not need to check everyday! Home use doppler is for checking when you feel not your baby's motion.The best time for checking is after meal, such as 30 minutes after breakfast, lunch and dinner. The 120-160 fetal heart rate/per minute is normal and regular. You may refer to our fetal doppler blog article:
