At one time chimney swipes would tie a weight and rope to a turkey drop it down a chimney, the flapping bird would dislodge all the soot.

Luckily the bird just flew towards the window and was easy to catch.
You kept your composure well, I'd have been swearing profusely. You can't really get angry with wildlife.
