    can we just take a moment to appreciate the story telling in dark souls? you hear all about the knight artorias who died after traversing the abyss. he's painted as amazingly powerful and strong,I mean the abyss of all places,he went there! and then we finally get a dlc and its named after him. and while playing the dlc you find...a frail,broken husk of what was once a much more powerful knight. it just amazes me the way the from team puts more story into the location and designs than dialogue.

      +Robby C. What makes it better is the incredible detail, like how he is left handed, but because his left arm is broken during the fight, he's a lot more unbalanced, just adds to it, FROM SOFTWARE really know how to weave a story together

      +CidGuerreiro1234 Even so the Abyss' corruption may be the reasons for that and all the rest, the guy literally spews the abyss from himself as well, there's no longer a body under that armor. Just abyss.

      Textrosity Yeah, what we fight is but a shadow of what Artorias once was. To fight him in his prime would probably be something way beyond the Chosen Undead's abilities. Maybe even harder than fighting Gwyn in his prime.

    What makes this boss fight so sad is that Artorias was a legend. He was the Abysswalker, only his time in the Abyss corrupted him, left him hollow. In the end, killing him was almost a mercy.

    • @TheShopete
      @TheShopete 10 лет назад +24

      Gwyn was a legend who sacrifices his soul to feed the flame When you kill him, you were doing him a favor. Neither were evil, in fact almost no boss who we kill was really evil, just get in our way.

    • @YxFLETCHxY
      @YxFLETCHxY 10 лет назад +43

      Not only that, but after Artorias saw the power of the abyss, he gave up his shield to protect his close friend, Sif, the grey Wolf. Even knowing how much the odds were against him, Artorias bravely fought on, into the abyss and into Manus' lair. But in the end, Manus' power was too great, he destroyed Artorias' left arm and corrupted him.
      Artorias the abyss walker, great Knight of Gwyn had failed to stop Manus. The chosen undead cleaned up where Artorias left off. In the end, Artorias lost his mind and 'died' alone, having achieved nothing, leaving friends and loved ones behind all to serve his weakening king.
      One of the saddest parts of this to me is the fact that Sif stayed by his master even after death, guarding his grave for so many years, fighting anyone who would attempt to steal from the grave. Everything, to protect the one that protected him.

      One more thing that makes Artorias even more Badass, in one of the DS 1 covers we see a picture of him entering the abyss which we can notice from that Artorias was left-handed, but when we fought him, he used his right hand, just a little detail that i think is really cool. ;)

    • @KoJeTsCorner
      @KoJeTsCorner 10 лет назад +5

      Idriss bouchenne Actually that probably gimped him even more than not having his shield. Having to use his non dominate hand Made his swings wild and hard to manage. Most likely the only reason the chosen undead even has a chance against him even with the abyss corrupting him.

      @repcapacka3517 6 лет назад +35

      Actually, the OST is created to show that Artorias was corrupted by the abyss, in the fight, your not fighting Artorias, you fighting the broken shell of himself, the music is kinda sad because though the whole game you hear about Artorias being a great knight who stopped the abyss, and appeared to be loved by many, but after all of you hear from them, its just a broken knight, a great hero a hero no longer, when the DLC 1st came out and I played it, I didnt expect it to be knight Artorias, because people knew he fell to the abyss, but just seeing him all corrupted, and this sad music in the back, the music itself can tell you he has a sad story.

  • @RyanH8sU

    A fallen hero's theme. So dark and depressingly epic. If he were human and able to weild his great shield... He'd probably rule over all. It's a shame we meet this legend in such a corrupted state of decay and darkness. R.I.P, Knight Artorias, the Abyss walker.

      It's a shame From Software made magic/holy damage so useless. I always want to make the uncursed version of his sword, but it doesn't do as much damage as weapons like the abyss sword or the dark knight halberd. I really hope they fixed the damage disparity on elemental/holy/magic weapons in DS2.

    Artorias is my favorite boss in the game. He gives a tough challenging fight that's also a lot of fun and has a really interesting lore connection. It's challenging, but it's not cheap or annoying like Bed of Chaos. It's a lot like Gwyn in that there's no tricks, no gimmicks, it's just a straight up duel to the death, and I'd have it no other way

      Personally, I think gwyn is kind of a poorly thought out boss. His attacks are hard to read, his attacks are super fast, and he gives you 0 time to heal unless you parry. The only giant soul battle I liked was the four kings, the others (boc, seathe, nito, gwyn). Nito and gwyn especially need improvement.

      +Neo - Devil In a way yes, but if you look at the image of artorias on the cover of darksouls he has his sword in his left hand. It looks like his right hand was crushed by the abyss and so he fights us with his offhand, which might mean that had he had his left hand he would kick our ass :(

  • @ahhaboom
    @ahhaboom 10 лет назад +345

    Best part about this?
    IF Artorias is indeed the character on the box art, which he very well may be, he wields his sword in his left hand.
    So not only is he using his greatsword in one hand, he's using it without the use of his dominant arm.
    I love Artorias. So much.

    • @crazyj10agains
      @crazyj10agains 10 лет назад +24

      The design of his armor would suggest otherwise. His left arm is very armored (Which would impede mobility, not good for sword use) while his right arm isn't. I'd say he's more likely to be right-handed.

      Batista1395 The knight on the cover is also wearing different armor from Artorias (there are clear differences that decay wouldn't account for) and looks to be going through a redesigned fog-gate, not definitively entering the Abyss.
      I wouldn't look too much into cover-art altered for the western release. I'm not entirely sure it was even designed by Fromsoft.

    This man, who hath sacrificed all for the greater good of everyone, is a man to admire. To revere. To fear.
    This man, who willingly took on a force so strong it is merely called ''The Abyss''. All consuming blackness, with no hope.
    He hath proven that should one look long enough into the Abyss, it too shall look unto you.
    And as he gazed into The Abyss, it changed him. It killed him. He is no longer Artorias. He is a poor creature unfortunate enough to be as brave as he was.
    This creature, Artorias must have been in so much pain. Weakened by the abyss, unable to use his weapons to their fullest extent, he still managed to insite fear into me. The entire game I've been hearing tales about the one called 'Knight Artorias'. So powerful and respected was he, that none knew not whom he was.
    When we see him, I had that feeling when fighting Sif.
    I didn't want to fight him. I didn't want to hurt him. Either his mind was too weakened to see that I had come in peace, and mistook me for apart of the Abyss, or if the Abyss took control of him, he attacked. And for the greatest time I refused to fight.
    It was only until I realized his plight. Until I realized that he was in pain, I took his howls as anger. After I realized, I thought of them as howls of begging. Begging to be slain. To be released.
    In truth, I'm such a fanboy for lore of any game that his death scream haunts my thoughts even to this day.
    That final scream, the final release of his voice called out unto me, and it said two words.
    ''Thank you.''
    That scream truly haunts me. I feel sorrow, yet pride, that my blade was the one to end his torment.
    Good gods, this game is so fantastic. I really hope just somehow we see more of Artorias.

    • @Tracker947
      @Tracker947 10 лет назад +92

      To call it murder disgraces their memory. Why belittle them with a title such as murder hanging over their deaths? They went down fighting for what they believed in. They gave everything for what they believed in. The last mercy we could give Artorias was an honorable death before he was unleashed upon the world. And Sif doesn't want anyone to end up like his master. So he defends the covenant. When you come looking for it, he is trying to protect you. He will not give up the ring willingly, and to allow him to live with the knowledge that he could not save you from a doomed fate would have crushed him, and possibly driven him to suicide. It is also probably something of a point of honoring Artorias's memory by ensuring no one else ends up like him. And he allowing someone to take the ring would've been like failing his companion.
      Remember them for what they were, Remember what they believed in, Remember what they died for, And remember why they had to die.

      It was his fate, Sif was just unfortunate to stand in your way, never the less.. the dog would be greatful for the chosen undead ended their suffering. I never understood why Sif is giant, along with the sword and grave stone in darkroot. Explanation anyone?

    • @Tracker947

      RyanH8sU I'm assuming as Sif slayed more and more would be warriors following in Artorias's footsteps, he absorbed their souls similar to the Chosen Undead and got bigger. The sword was probably magically linked to him, seeing how you can wield weapons that giant enemies wield and they automatically scale to the size of the wielder. The grave probably because people wanted an EPIC memorial to the Abysswalker.

    Artorias is without a doubt the most heartbreaking tragic hero in the Dark Souls series.
    There are many bosses and characters who are struck down by tragedy, failure and grief but Artorias' tale hits hard.
    We hear of him throughout the game, we listen to important characters speak of his noble deeds and how he alone defeated the most profound of evils. The whole time we stand between disbelief and admiration, truth and legend, but one thing is for sure, Artorias is a hero, Lordran's hero, our hero.
    When we finally go through the fog in the DLC we reluctantly realize that the hollow shadow standing before us is that of Gwyn's proudest knight.
    His armor worn out by combat and pain, his aura changed by darkness, his will of steel forever broken.
    Artorias, a man said to be invincible, unbendable, incomparable, was no more. Instead we see a shadow of his past self, an empty vessel. He looks at us without conviction or intention and filled with hatred he strikes the first hit.
    It's an arduous fight, more so because we're killing our hero than because of his outstanding combat skills.
    As time passes the knight weakens and as we strike our final blow he screams. A shriek so passionate, so intense that it reminds us he was human. And with that final outburst, ends the legend of Artorias the Abysswalker, knight of Gwyn.
    And while we go on to end what he started, we never quite get over his fate. A man we thought godlike, was turned into a demon. Not even a God could resist the temptation of darkness, and so his most noble intention availed to nothing as the abyss claims his soul too.
    This said, i have an art channel and i'de love to do a drawing of Artorias, just not sure it will get a lot of views. If this comment reaches around 20 likes i'll start working on it. Oh and if you want to check out my channel and subscribe, it helps :)
    Peace fellow warriors.

And to think that he lorevise is pretty crippled, his left arm which he fights with is broken and he totally whoops everybodys asses unless you do the iron flesh and 2 hand a greatsword at him, still then he might be able to kill you even before the iron flesh goes out... This man is strong, and was Even stronger before he lost to the Abyss.

    • @SkeithTheCursed
      @SkeithTheCursed 10 лет назад +31

      And its all the better how the lore portrays him going through hell. Being torn apart by humanity, saving his companion sif with the last of his strength thus shattering his arm. Then finally corrupted by Manus but with enough willpower to scream out in agony against what he had become, even under its influence he still carried on slaughtering creatures from the abyss until he finally comes across you. A mere undead uncorrupted by the influence of the abyss and not ascended to godhood by the souls of the first flame. An undead with the will not to hollow.

      Ok.
      "hey, listen" is from Ocarina of time. the fairy Navi says it a lot.
      "So long gay bowser" is from Mario 64. Mario says it when tossing Bowser across the room
      "The smashing sound from the original Super Smash Bros" can be described ad a sort of "PONG!" sound effect.
      "Snake? SNAKE? SNNAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!" is from Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Miller says it when you die, during the game over screen.
      "Stop! You violated the law!" is from the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. an imperial guard says it when he catches you stealing something, and that is often.
      "Fus Ro DAH!" Is from Skyrim. You say it, and it does something magical.
      "I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with LIiIiIGHT! *light *light *light" is from Devil May Cry. Your guy says it when someone important dies.
      " 'Ow may I assist you?" if from the Witcher 3, some smith says it when you talk to him. He repairs your armor cheap, so you will talk to him a often.
      That's all, but Artorias's death cry here is still more iconic.

      And if She did I doubt She would send Her crow to get You to Lordran if She was trying to protect You.
      So maybe He`s referring to someone else, the First one to lock You up might be Your mother, Maybe? And seeing how Artorias is referred to as father... Ciaran, perhaps? That`d certainly explain the "protect" thing.
      Then again what +Энхсайхан Хисториа sounds more likely.

      Artorias and Astrea share a pattern.
      Astraea is probably the most Iconic boss battle from Demon's souls. Not to mention the most saddening and mind rattling. It's so innocent, yet demonic, to kill her. You are led to believe all Demons are bad, but she is a stick in that theory. The only good Demon. Tainted only by the fact of willingly giving in and becoming a Demon, something the Maiden in Black did, that nobody seems to disagree upon.
      Artorias is the most lore wise engaging battle. Like Astrea, he willingly walked the abyss, and found that the abyss was spreading, and would take the world. He gave his humanity to try and stop the abyss, becoming the beast you see here.
      Sir alonne... Possibly the most epic, engaging and Iconic battle of all Souls history. He is the one who starts all of the Dark souls 2 lore. Uprising a king, and an empire that would expiate problems through greed and lust. When he leaves the kings side, he goes to find new places to serve, never being seen again.When you go into the past, and begin your departure to his room, he becomes aware, but does not leave. Instead he idly awaits your arrival, the final test, the true final battle. He is not consumed by the dark, like the other knights and demons, but instead wields it and controls it, much like the chosen undead. His room, a glorious arena, and his soul, gleaming with light, not tainted by the dark.
      He is the true final boss.

    The chosen undead, killing off the weakened, old heroes and gods of legend.
    The man unmatched with a greatsword...left in a sorry state of his former self. Crippled and consumed by the darkness, but only slightly holding on.
    That death scream was the final release of himself, before the rest is consumed by darkness as he dies, leaving his soul black.
    It's a sad world, that Lodran.

    Artorias was a direct visual reference to Guts in his Berserker armor in the Berserk manga. The armor would give him superhuman abilities, at the cost of numbing him to pain. It let him fight on and on and on, with bones being broken, as the armor continued to move his body. Of course, when the effect wears off and Guts returned to his human state, the pain begins...

    Goddamn... this fight. The first time I fought him, I didn't realize who he was. After a few deaths, however, I began to realize who this warrior was and what this battle meant. One warrior who fought against the darkness and fell against a warrior who has a blank spot in his desteny. The ending you pick really makes me think about this battle. I chose the Dark Lord ending. That really made me think: the one who fell to the darkness, yet tries to fight it against the one destined to let it engulf the world. I can't tell who the real villain is here...

    The story of Knight Artorias is the best one in Dark Souls. A tragic tale of a great man who fell to darkness, it really gave the fight with him a lot of impact. Rpg Gaming Nerd Even in the blind run, Dunstein and Slamough only killed me about 3 times before I changed tactics and used a shield. The non-DLC boss that gave me the most trouble was probably the Bell Gargoyles. I had no idea what I was getting into, and didn't know that their attacks were blockable until, like, my 15th try. Not to mention the gauntlet of beef jerky men you have to run through to get to the fog gate. Of course, now I kill them every time on my first try, but... the visions of that damn fire insta-killing me never cease.

      Codename: Potato
      See the opposite was for me. I had trouble on the Bell Gargoyles and still blocked with a shield yet once I got to Toejam and Earl I deemed both my lightning spear noob trap and shield useless and two handed my dragon tooth to try and beat Super Bert (my god how many nicknames do these assholes have?) almost flawlessly due to my massive Estus consumption in the first stage of the fight.
      And of course because I was stupid at the time I broke my crystal halberd and had no means of repair due to the amount of chunks I dumped on the lightning spear.
      I mean the freaking Bed of Chaos didn't even give me a hard time I killed it in 4 attempts, one for each orb and 2 for the jump but Drake and Josh? Never gonna forget how much of a challenge they posed to me.

    I leave major props to the studio when they designed this fight. Dueling Artorias, the epitome of chivalry and knighthood, in itself was a fulfilling and VERY challenging experience. It wasn't just the duel though, it was also the atmosphere. You fight him in an arena. No boulders to exploit, no columns to run behind. It's you and Artorias. The music drips with the depth of the fight as you strive against a man corrupted by the blackest darkness to ever exist. Everything the studio did with this fight made it a pure and epic 1 on 1. And to top it off, when Artorias falls, the cry he lets out in agony tears at your heart strings as he collapses to the ground.

    For such a damn hard-yet fair- boss battle, I honestly felt bad for killing him. Killing Ornstein and Smough leaves you with a feeling of accomplishment and relief that you finally persevered and endured, but Artorias? Nope. The guy is arguably more honorable and, dare I say it, heroic than the player. He fought for what he believed in and knew he had the duty to do, even though the odds were against him, and lost; now you're presented with slaying his empty and corrupted shell, and he's still able to put up a worthy fight. And then you finally relieve him of his suffering, but it just doesn't feel good, you know?

    How Dark Souls usually works: "Hey, I may have died 127 times to you, but now, on the 128th time, i know your attack patterns!" In fact, i was surprised how easy some of the fights got in the Lategame once i've gotten the hang of what to do. I died plenty of times to Gwyn, Manus, Kalameet and Nito, but not because the bosses were giving me trouble, but because i screwed up in some way, or still learning their attack patterns.
    Then there's THIS guy. THIS guy is probably the ONLY boss in all of Dark Souls which i actually had trouble with. Taurus Demon? Learned his pattern, beat him eventually. Capra? Died plenty of times to him, but as soon as i got rid of the dogs for the first time, he became piss easy. Butterfly? Learn his pattern and what to do to evade which attack. Manus? Little trouble, until i both remembered the Silver Pendant exists, and figured out i could summon Sif. Super Londo Bros? Solaire. Case closed. Artorias on the other hand, I learned his pattern and how to dodge which attack, and he STILL kicked my ass, because the nature of his steroid-magic allows for very little room for fuck-ups, much less than any other boss in the game. The fight was still a lot of fun though!

His legs were withered away by the all-around pursuer attack, and his arm was crushed by Manus's Catalyst. Manus nearly killed him, then corrupted him with Dark. Artorias's entire body, not just his shield arm, were broken. He used the power of his shield to protect Sif as long as he could, creating the ward that surrounds the pup, before succumbing to the Dark.. His body is still in this state, as you can see if you watch his movements you can tell.

      namesOnkeL By all means he is my favorite Dark Souls character but every other member of the four knights couldn't give me a challenge like Artorias could, you had to be very specific and quick when attacking him. Orenstein on the other hand could be easily killed with a couple heavy attacks from Black Knight weapons in his normal form and his larger form just required you to hug his legs and swing away like some lumberjack.

    • @GeneraleShadow

      A Villain I actually found Artorias not that hard to kill, even in NG+, Manus was harder for me, he's the cheapest thing after the bed of chaos if he starts spamming that OP dark magic.
      Kalameet was fairly easy as well, cutting his tail was the hardest part about it.
      O&S are just hard for new players, they get intimidated because they are two bosses instead of one but they fall rather quickly.
      Artorias for me is the best of the Knights as meanwhile Ornstein and buddies were fiddling themselves fighting overgrown bats he was killing his arse off to impede the Dark of the Abyss getting all over the world.
      Even though he failed in his mission he still could save his best friend by using his shield so he died like a Hero knowing that his best friend would guard him after his death like he did when he was alive.
      IT's really sad when you gotta kill Sif after you save him in the past, :(

    Some people say that Knight Artorias is a hard boss fight. Well, just be lucky his arm is broken, his shield is missing, he's corrupted by the abyss, he doesn't have Sif with him, and he isn't using his dominant arm. XD

    The most frightening moment i experienced was after i beat him. I thought, i gave him peace. Maybe the game will turn a little bit on the better side, a silver lining. Then i went to the city of oolacile. And then i heard this sound, i got shocked, depressed, unable to feel any joy or positive feeling in the next hours. It was the sound of these screaming children. God, these screams... Artorias was just the first messenger of the madness, i realized. I got depressed for days cause of that sick shit.

    Its so somber especially once u know the lore/backstory of his part in this game how he technically died fighting manus; his greatshield dented and protecting sif and his dominant arm(his left those who disagree can face him)broken but when fighting, he doesn't attack u when ur far from him a bit because what little power and will he has holds him back. This theme makes sense for a character like him; a powerful, great knight of Gwen, fallen from his former glory now a slave to the darkness thats why he's called the abysswalker.

    Still gives me shivers, this was my favorite boss battle of the entire game to be honest. Artorias literally is oozing with character and is a great example of a boss done right. I fucking love this boss battle, just yesterday did it :D. Easily one of the best bosses ever for me, have to focus a lot and dodge his badass moves, cause he pack hell of a punch. Took me a while to realize how to dodge some of his moves completely.
    Artorias looks so cool doing those triple flips and using only 1 hand, damn! Although, he slaughtered me like 40 times lol, still was amazing battle! I didn't really pay that much attention to this song during the fight, was so focused on dodging his moves ;D. Excellent song now that I listen it fully.

      I have to agree with you. Artorias is my favorite boss to fight against because it's more challenging than fighting against Gwyn. You can parry Gywn's slashes but dodging Artorias' attacks along with getting as little damage as possible is why I love fighting against him. Fighting him is much more fun than most of the other bosses in Dark Souls in my opinion. I think I died about 4 times when I first fought against him and the combat experience is worth it.

    • @pardoneroswald7221
      @pardoneroswald7221 10 лет назад +24

      darezzi97 He's left handed to some people, me included, because he doesn't seem to be steady in the slightest using his right hand. His left arm may be broken to bits, but his legs are just fine. He always seems off-balance though. He always leans towards his sword arm. If you have any experience wielding a sword and shield, you know that you should always lean near your shield in case you need to block quickly. Artorias is obviously VERY skilled.
      Now work on your swordsmanship Vergil.

    • @darezzi97
      @darezzi97 10 лет назад +2

      Interesting thought, but while he does lean a bit to his sword, it might be because of it's weight. Every move with his sword would be impossible with a shield in the other hand, so I think he was much more defensive before he became abyssed. But then again, your theory and my theory are both, well, theories, but I think no one would've thought of him being left-handed without the box-art portraying a man with Artorias' sword. And I don't need to work on my swordsmanship, I use a katana, which is very light, so I never explored heavier sword, and don't even mention shields!

    • @ashes180-x7d
      @ashes180-x7d 10 лет назад +7

      darezzi97 He had a shield before the Abyss got him you know. Also, katanas are not light in weight so I suspect you are lying about knowing "swordsmanship".

    Artorias and the Abyss Watchers are the most tragic stories in Dark Souls. Artorias is basically Link, a knight, a hero, an adventurer, he sought to destroy the Abyss and protect the lands, he used his shield in defense of those who he loved, and raised his sword in their name, and so he bravely wandered into the Abyss. to protect his best friend Sif, he gave him his shield, and got claimed by the Abyss himself. Years have passed, a group of brave warriors and knights, hearing the stories about Artorias fight against the Abyss, decided to raise their sword in his name, but they had no true intention themselves, they just wanted to fight the Abyss with no cause, razing entire Kingdoms in the slightest sight of the Abyss, they despised the use of a shield, for them, Artorias needed no shield, they misunderstood every ideal Artorias represented, for them it was a noble cause, then the Abyss claimed them aswell...
