  • Which hub do you use with your MacMini? Speed Speed Speed. I use the Blackmagic Disk Speed test on Sold State Drives that I installed in 2 different Mac Mini M2 Storage Hubs : Qwiizlab M2 Storage hub and the Satechi MacMini M2 Storage Hub. The results surprised me!!!!

    Why didn't you try the same disk on two different hubs? We don't even understand which is faster, if it's the fault of the disk or the hub

    I just realized you uploaded this video as a response to my comment. Thank you very much! I was thinking about Satechi hub for my Mac Studio, I guess I'll avoid it and choose between Qwiizilab and Hagibis.

      I’m sure you made the purchase already but just for anyone else who’s looking at this: they’re identical. If you open the Qwiizlab, the PCB says HAGIBIS on it. The Qwiizlab is like, five bucks more expensive, but their customer service was also much better when I was asking questions before purchasing, so I ended up with the Qwiizlab.

    This is not a criticism of your channel at all. However, you biased the comparison when you did not use the exact same Ssd cards in both hubs. The time it took to get a card for the other hub was bogus because you just should have waited to post your results once you had thee same card in both machines. Your method was sound but you biased the comparison. Please try again. it would make your channel appear to be more reputable. thanks!!!

    amazing video. this is exactly what i was looking for. i leaning more towards the satachi but now Quizlab, however do you need to have two drives in the Quizlab or can you just have one NVMe? secondly i notice, in your previous video you plugged in power into quizlab using up one of your usb ports on the mini - is that a must - does it need power? thanks !

    • @digitalmaus
      @digitalmaus  Год назад +1

      Hello Jerome, thanks for the kind words. I believe you can use the Qwiizlab with just one drive plugged in. Also , I connected the hub to the macmini’s USB-A port according to Qwiizlab’s instructions. Although I have heard others have connected it to a power brick. connecting to the USBA or power-brick are both done to supply power to the hub for it to run the two SSDs.

    For this kind of test, I would like to see how they performed after some time. I don't have a hub like that, but the main problem with my dongles is that they overheat. The results in the first 20 min are great, but the workday is usually longer (I typically generate training data, and train neural networks for weeks without a break). If you buy a hub like that it is to use more than one port at once, so it would be nice to see how it performs when you copy files to some 2 USB drives + SD card in addition to build in one.
    But it's nice to have at least some insight about these hubs.

    You're mixing units. USB-C is rated for 10Gigabits per Second (10Gbps), not 10Gigabyte per Second, or 5Gbps, not 5Gigabyte per s. So 10Gbps equals a maximum of 1250 Megabytes per Second, and 5Gbps equals 625 Megabytes per Second. Therefore, 765.6 Megabytes per Second is pretty decent, considering that the 1250 MB/s is an absolute theoretically achievable speed. The same goes for the 5Gbps speeds. If this really was 10 Gigabytes per Second, you would think of rates of 10000 Megabytes per Second, which would be nearly the speed of DDR3 RAM.

    You should also include the Trebleet Super Thunderbolt 3 hub that adds CFexpress B support as well. It’s the fastest 2800 MB/s NVME performance for M.2 Samsun 980 Pro and also includes support for a second 2.5 inch SATA III SSD. I use a Samsung 870 EVO. Also, many 10 Gb/s USB-C and USB-A. Finally the Thunderbolt supports daisy chaining so no loss of a port. A great product for me but not the cheapest.

    Do you find that the drives in the Qwiizlab get too hot? I’m setting mine up this weekend and think maybe I should toss a heatsink on to the nVME drive.

      Hello Chess, I am only using a 2 TB NVMe in the Qwiizlab. i use it to quickly drop files from my downloads folder into. I am a bit of a digital hoarder and can’t bring myself to immediately trash files. But since I’ve used it I haven’t had any overheating issues. Although, I mostly use external SSDs for my video edits. It allows me to edit on my MacMini or edit on the go with my 15 inch Air. Thanks for watching!!!

    How is the heat with the Qwiizlab and NVMe after say 2 hours of usage ? Im thinking of putting an M2 mac mini on top of this.

    • @digitalmaus
      @digitalmaus  Год назад +1

      I video edit, mostly 4k at 24 -30. My MacMini sits in top of the Qwiizlab with a silicone pot holder between them. the pot holder keeps the Mac mini from sliding on top. i edit from a Samsung T7 Shield. directly connected to the Mini. I mostly use the Qwiizlab for the SD card reader, and to store items from my download folder on the 2TB Nvme drive I attached. I have not noticed any issues with heat.

    Bought a Qwiizlab hub - anyone else have it and have an issue with it unmounting the installed drives?
    I'm worried about disk (and file) corruption if this keeps happening, and Qwiiz haven't been very helpful tbh. They did advise me to buy a power adaptor for the hub which I got, but still it's happening. Qwiiz ended up refunding me for the hub and not requesting it back, which would be a result if I wasn't living in fear of disk corruption due to the almost daily issue.
    The comments here made me think about putting it on top of the Mac Mini rather than underneath it, in case it's an overheating issue, but any other ideas from anyone in a similar position?

    • @digitalmaus
      @digitalmaus  10 месяцев назад

      Hello Scott, sorry to hear about your experience with the Qwiizlab. I have had mine for several months now. I have used it underneath my MacMini with a silicone pot holder underneath and never had the issue you had. I will keep an eye out and report any issues I have in the community tab. • @dennisdecaccia682
      @dennisdecaccia682 Год назад +2

      @@digitalmaus 2 basic symptoms and 1 problem. The inter drive could not maintain a link which caused transfer failures and speed reduction. On a windows portion and system, you would hear connection and disconnection tones. The. Solution was to put a OWC powered Thunder bolt hub between the Mac Mini and the Satechi hub. Also it would not work if certain peripherals were attached, they had to be self powered but this is suggested by Satechi statement not to use the USB ports for charging. The other problem is also powered base as very few USB self powered devices worked as they too seemed to draw to much power in combination such as a keyboard, mouse and just about any other device. All these problems seemed to go away once the OWC powered hub was added.

    • @digitalmaus
      @digitalmaus  Год назад +1

      so you have to buy another hub to make the Satechi work? LOL

    • @dennisdecaccia682

      I actually use one with my PowerBook M1 Air and just tried o see if it worked. I have 2 Satechi Hubs one for my Mac Mini 2018 and one for my M2 Pro. One has the ability to add the SATA SSD and one does not. If I do not use the SSD, they both do what I wanted them to do add some extra ports.
