- In this jacket battle we have the Arc'teryx Cerium LT Vs. The Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer 2. I love the vs format you have for these jackets - it's the clearest way I've found on the web of understanding these physical pieces. I think a little more information on sizing (your measurements for instance, sizing up and down recommendations for wider chest or longer arms for instance) would add a little bit. Have you thought about doing more mid/baselayer content? I think this format would work really well for that stuff too. Thank you!
Thanks for the encouragement and feedback. Yes I got a vid coming for how to layer for fall and winter backpacking and I’ll be introducing a few base and mid layers I like. From there I’ll probably do some verses vids of them if people would like that. Thanks for the suggestion!
Fantastic comparison -- thank you!
Great video love the format GW vs LT awesome job. I really appreciate you giving all the pros and cons for both jackets.
Thanks. Glad it was helpful
I bought GW2 last year. Recently purchased a Cerium. Warmth and comfort are close. Howevr, the Cerium zipper, as with all Arcteryx, is much easier to use, smoother and easier to thread and grip.
Thanks for sharing!
I really wanted to get the Cerium LT but could never find my size or color because of being sold out. So I went with the Ghost Whisperer 2 & so far I like it. The Ghost Whisperer does fit good & plenty warm for my environment. So I think , you can't go wrong with the Ghost Whisperer. Besides, anything colder than 30 degrees Fahrenheit, you probably are going want a heaver jacket for sure.
Totally agree. Glad you like it.
has arcteryx stopped making the cerium SL? im trying to find it and it is nowhere! i think ill be buying the ghost whisperer then...
Thanks for your thorough and fresh reviews, I love them.
Although I like my gw2, I was about to buy a Cerium lt (just love the Arcteryx jackets). However, it occurred to me that the "advantage" of the synthetic insulation is a great disadvantage when you know that it will loose the insulation due to compression, hence retaining the down properties at the core and losing insulation at shoulders, collar, arms...
With my synthetic insulated jackets, I know they have a short-medium life and that's it, but I expect duration-reliability from down and the Cerium may prove short lived because of the synthetic additions.
Could you share your opinion? (Some people throw away synthetics before one year if they use them and compress them habitually).
Thanks, yes the cerium synthetic filled portions will not have the same lifespan of the down. It doesn’t mean the jacket is unusable after the synthetic loses its loft, it just wont be as warm in those areas. It is actually just a small portion of the jacket that is synthetic any ways. I would say from normal use and compression it you could get about 3 years out of it. But the cerium is still using ultralight materials so that would be about the life span of the jacket anyways, just be delicate with it.
Good Review. I think the GW is closer to the SL than the LT. If you happen to have an SL, please do the GW vs the SL.
That review is coming soon 😉
Great review, as usual, I find that MH's website frequently has incorrect weight. I still have my 7 years old original Ghost Whisperer, it is good to see that they add warmth to it, honestly it was never warm enough. Your evaluation of the ghost whisper UL sounds a lot like the original ghost whisperer.
Regarding hydrophobic down, I am not sure it's all that useful in real life. I notice that it dries faster when I wash jackets with hydrophobic down, but once the water got past the shell and you squeeze it into your bag, it's gonna be cold the next day. They both take forever to dry.
Maybe it's just me, but in the backcountry, my down jacket will never touch the rain. You just need to make that mistake once.
I agree. If its going to rain, I pull out my shell. It is just nice to have that extra measure just in case. As far as the UL, it is lighter and less warm then the original from my experience. The reason they discontinued the old version was to breach off and have 2 different versions imo
Can you give clear and frank advice about the best jackets, the first for cold weather and the second for very cold weather, so I use this jacket right and I do not need others at all. I live in an area with little rain, but the wind is very cold and very cold
I typically like layering so you can regulate the heat depending on how active you are. But if you are looking for warmer jackets for cold id recommended the Thorium AR . It goes down colder and is more weather resistant. Also the Cerium SV is great but pricier
I have the Arc'teryx and the old whisperer . There is no comparison . The Arc is way way warmer. I don't like being cold and will sacrifice a few ounces for real ! I have the 2 coming so I'm curious . I do agree y you can't pack down the Arc and it's takes up a lot of room in gorilla.
Cerium is excellent. Only reason I’d choose the gw2 is in the summer when it only gets cool nights when the cerium may be a bit overkill. Other then that is worth the few extra ounces
How’s the durability. I am concerned about the 10D material.
Hello. I don't understand what you are saying because I don't speak English. Which of these two jackets would you recommend? I will take either one.
Out of the two id go with the cerium LT. better quality and fit
