  • "They've always been deliberately outrageous. They set out to shock, it's part of their plan, part of their image."
Scene spends a day with Mick Tucker, Brian Connolly, Steve Priest and Andy Scott, better known as glam rock band The Sweet. The day begins with a trip to BBC Television Centre to record a performance of their hit single Block Buster!, with all the wardrobe, makeup and rehearsal that entails.
The band have become famous - and in some quarters, infamous - for their outrageous stage clothes, but they have also sold over 14 million records, and have a burgeoning fan club. What does it take to have a lasting career as a rock band? Is the music business really that glamorous? Why have they come in for such a hard time from the music press?
    Sarah Ward narrates.

Why stress about who is in the hall of fame? Do they even matter ? They are not the authority on rock music....they are a bunch of self proclaimed " experts" who inducted the people they like...bruce springstein and his whole family and roadies and pizza delivery man were inducted. And yet bands that truly deserve it , nothing....hall of fame is a joke!

Wow yes they shaped Rock n Roll definitely.
But they did so much hands on work that they didn't do it the way most bands did so much more that actually they should have floated to the very very top for puting so much more of they're time money and emotional being that they should be with extreme higher ground honors than many other bands .
Sometimes life is fair but not fair enough and with regards to "SWEET" ALL We can say is thank you guys thanks for all the records we can go back and listen to and all the music videos your iconic Gang of focused musicians and fans are and always will be as one ...

Most people only remember sweet for their bubblegum records, blockbuster, ballroom blitz etc, but they were actually a phenomenal heavy rock band whose musicianship and Brian's vocal range could rival and British rock band from that era. Chinn and Chapman wrote their chart hits until fox on the run but their b sides were mostly album tracks written by the band. A lot of bands since took inspiration from sweet and the fact that teenagers today are listening to them 50 years after their only number one is testament to their brilliance. I would guess that anyone watching this is already well aware of their legacy but if not I would urge you to have a listen to their albums.

There were videos- but apart from the core psychedelic era of 1966-69, or when later, advanced camera and editing effects came in, most of the videos before the 80s were straightforward live performances. The videos were made for ToTP and similar shows to market the groups when they were trying to break America, or one of them was off sick and nobody else could adequately fill in, etc.- or if they REALLY didn't want to meet J****y S*****e for some reason.

either way even if 'THE SWEET' were manufactured and didn't originally write their own songs they were still a great band in their own right including the awesome songs they came up with on thier own.

Top!
