      You're saying it is a free template and as soon as I gave my email id, there is a pop up pushing a paid course/service (The Career Advancement Toolkit). The worst part is there is no option to skip. Don't mislead people for the sake of your business. Now you have my email (because even if you don't give people anything, you will have their data and sell it as leads) and I don't have the free sample.

      @@ProfessorHeatherAustin thank you for your efforts. I have a question about the adaptability of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to different market standards, specifically the French market. French CVs are typically detailed and can be up to seven pages long, following a specific order: name, title, education, certifications, skills, languages, and experiences. This format is preferred by talent acquisition professionals in France, but I'm concerned about its compatibility with ATS. Could you elaborate on whether ATS systems have a universal structure they prefer, or can they be adjusted to accommodate different market standards and languages?

    Unbelievably stupid that this is what job hunting has turned into .... how does one not feel degraded when stripping naked and jumping through flaming hoops like this? I've seen resumes with more credentials and accolades than that of a prime minister of a european country, but they come in needing to be trained and have no sense of logic or problem solving skills whatsoever. This filtration system, whatever it is, is completely failing both the employer and potential employees of any business that engages in these hiring practices. This is BASICALLY prioritizing erudite bullshitters instead of choosing the best candidate for the job strictly based on their merit....

      I see where you are coming from, just I think it is a little exaggerated. First off, people lacking critical thinking skills has always been an issue, and it shows up more now as we train for jobs based much more on mental processes than behaviors. Second, formatting a resume to be received well with ATS is just a simple rule of the game. If you were looking to vet for critical thinking, thinking ahead to format your resume properly i.e. problem solving in the context of a job search.. not a bad way to weed out practical applicants. Sure, some will be left behind for jobs they would be qualified for, but also, it's not difficult to understand why companies who receive hundreds of applications a day needs tech to help them at least give each one some sort of look. They put in what they need to the system, and the system looks through them for those requirements. Idk man.. doesn't seem like it's that big of a deal. I mean, you want a merit based system, and these resumes are where you put your merits.

    I put on my resume I had 10+ years of experience. I was told that I was rejected because they specifically said they wanted someone with at least "9 years of experience" . 10 years did not match 9 years so I guess I was not the right fit. The fact that HRs are using ATS also indicates that companies are in no hurry to hire. Which means there are even bigger problems than anyone can do anything about.

    Hi Heather. I was wondering what your thoughts are on changing a job title on a resume? I had a job a few years ago in which 33% - 50% of my work was as a social media manager, but my official title was intake specialist. Would it be ok for me to change the title on my resume to Social Media Manager when applying for that type of role?

    • @JoseRap
      @JoseRap 4 месяца назад +1

      How would they know? I guess they would know only if they ask you about an other aspect of social media management that you are unaware of and didn't do in that job... just make sure you know 100% of the responsibilities of a SMM and maybe you can be honest and say which part of the job you did/didn;t do as long as you justify it. Or maybe you can change it and use a "/" Intake specialist/Social Media Manager. This is less misleading and you'll feel better about it if you need to justify it.
      I did a few weeks in a recruitment company and thought I could stretch it and lie so I could get into another recruitment place, basically I got absolutely GRILLED in the interview when the guy started asking me about other stuff that I didn't do in the couple of weeks + had no idea about. funny enough when it came to money, I had no idea what a proper recruitment specialist was supposed to make. The guy looked like Peter Griffin and was equally as witty. SUPER GRILLED. learned from mistakes.

      Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about your challenges in the job search. If you've had a number of different jobs, it's important to focus your resume on the skills and experiences most relevant to the positions you're applying for now. Try using a functional or hybrid resume format, which emphasizes skills and achievements over a chronological job history. Also, ensure your cover letter effectively communicates your career narrative and how your diverse experiences make you a unique and valuable candidate. Remember, every application is a learning opportunity. Keep refining your approach, and stay persistent. The right opportunity is out there for you!

    • @JoseRap
      @JoseRap 4 месяца назад +1

      I am of the same, I went through a period where I changed jobs every few months. Understand that you may not need to list every single job ever. Also understand who you're dealing with, these are tired HR people SKIMMING through your resume pretty quickly after it's gone through ATS, they won't pay attention to dates, as long as they loosley match up thats good enough.
      I don't include all my jobs. depending on what job I am applying for a have a few that I include and a few that I remove, and of the one's i include i simply stretch the starting and finishing dates so that it is all somewhat and loosley cohesive.

    What are your thoughts on formatting a resume by job vs by topic so that you can add for example all of your project management together and all of your qualifications together.
    Great video! Thx

    • @ProfessorHeatherAustin
      @ProfessorHeatherAustin  7 месяцев назад +2

      Hi! Great question. The format of your resume should align with your career narrative and how you want to present your experience to future employers. Formatting by job (chronologically) is traditional and works well for those with a linear career path. It allows employers to see your progression and development over time within different roles. However, if you have a diverse range of experiences or are looking to highlight specific skills, a functional resume (by topic) can be more effective. Have you tested both methods for yourself?

    • @TeacherCast
      @TeacherCast 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@ProfessorHeatherAustin I have tested both. When you have multiple jobs (I'm a teacher) that are essentially the same but in different districts, it's difficult to create a resume that shows the same thing over and over again. (Sometimes the job doesn't change from district to district). For this reason I broke my resume into sections such as Leadership, Project Management, Customer Success, etc..

    What about if you’re an expert in all aspects of digital marketing and Omni-channel as it pertains to resume AND LinkedIn? I know we have to tailor each résumé to a job description, but how do we attach a résumé to LinkedIn that doesn’t exclude us when they view our LinkedIn profile and coming across as overqualified, etc. or whatever reason?
    In other words, best practice is to attach your résumé to LinkedIn, but the tailored résumé is sent to the employer.
    And in that case, which is more important? Optimizing LinkedIn first or which type of résumé or how specific of the résumé should we put down? (think of the chicken or the egg first).
    I’ve done the same job in multiple industries and have multiple specializations and certifications, which apply cross industry. which is one of the reasons why I went into digital marketing to begin with I think this is just why I am in paralysis right now

    • @DigitalBrooke
      @DigitalBrooke Месяц назад

      For example and I apologize for the multiple posts, I can be an Email Director, but also Director of Omni channel, traditional and digital marketing as well both of which I’m interested in. But even to get my first job in the industry way back when I had a dumb down my résumé, even to get a phone call back. So I’m not sure where to start. I have experience in nonprofits, was an executive producer for the digital department of multiple broadcast new stations, contractor for a fortune 50 Company under contract for six months before Covid happened and others

    Had someone run my resume through ATS. It identified a degree I don’t possess in an area I am
    Not qualified to work in (IT) and have no experience in. ATI said I have no education…. I have a doctrinal level degree…. The only thing it got correct was my damn name …. Seems like ATS is shit

    To recruiters, know that using ATS might feel like an intelligent move, but it is not. Earlier, when such a system was not being used, lot of people who may not have been a 100% match, however, had great skills and potential could be hired. But now with the ATS, a system with pre-defined criteria is deciding whether to pass a candidate or not. This is stupid and ineffective.
    Now a lot of people who may do a great job in a position despite lack of "credentials"/"degrees" are umable to get a job cos there is no competent human at the other end who may have the wisdom to see the potential of that candidate and give them a chance!!

      @ProfessorHeatherAustin Funny enough, I used to be an employment specialist and worked for Beacon Group based in Tucson. That was before 2020, though. Since then, I have struggled greatly to maintain employment myself. Later, I was laid off for a second time due to covid. Then, at another job, I was fired due to reporting a co-worker for abuse and fraud. She was really good friends with the owners of the company and made everyone miserable around her. I have never had an issue like that before in employment, so that has been challenging for me to get over this year. I never thought I would be fired. Despite my knowledge and previous experience, I am currently like a deer in headlights. I have been spending my days deeply depressed and bed rotting. I have been of no use to anyone, and I am "frozen" when it comes to applying to positions / updating my resume. I can't force myself to move forward even though I am in a desperate spot and am living off the charity of others. I need help. I have bad adhd, and that is definitely affecting me with this process. I have management experience and experience working with persons with disabilities, but idk if I want to go back into that field. Tbh, I am just not sure what I want to do. I do think I would like to work from home. I currently live in Glendale, AZ.

      I mean I just lost my main source of income too but applying to stuff like crazy isn't gonna help. What will help is to apply to jobs with intention, effort, and doing this as much as possible.
