In Russia nobody says about Stephen Hough. But such musicians who can combine such amazing emotional qualities with an ingenious sense of proportion we haven't. In my personal opinion, Mr. Hough is the best pianist of the 21st century, the play of which I have ever enjoyed. I apologise for my language, if I wrote something wrong.
I agree
I totally agree with your comment. He is a total artist. Not only pianist, he also is composer, author, and painter. Because of that, his sound quality is somewhat extraordinary. His performance of Rachmaninov's Raphsody on a Theme of Paganini was superb.
May be because we have our own great musicians?
@@MrGunzoller all our grate musicians Or dead after зэ перестройка.
This concerto is so good to hear that gives me chills.
This concerto is very beautiful. Mendelssohn was a great artist
My favorite pianist.
Demands incredible flexibility to pull of those arpeggios so smoothly and at that tempo. Hough is one of our premiere pianists today, a guy who can play anything with ease and finess.
Stephen Hough is surely one of the greats. Intelligent, articulate, and of course his playing is top-notch.
'It's probably not surprising that Stephen Hough has to prove that he's so perfectly tuned to these pieces. If you only choose to record one song, this would be a great first choice...
'[Hough] runs at its best, and capable of incorporating jolly whims without disturbing the flow of thought, this performance... boasts an almost idealistic lightness, vibrancy and impact...
'Stephen Hough has the ideal qualities of a keen attention to rhythmic detail and perfect fluidity of lines and phrases.' observer) Thanks to hyperion records
Brilliant, passionate, filled with spirit and personality with a unique voice. Absolutely loved listening to this.
I. Molto allegro con fuoco 0:03
II. Andante 7:13
III. Presto 12:46
In my book, the greatest living pianist. The piano does precisely what Mr. Hough wants it to. Cheers!
14:17 Oh his face shining up like that. True passion. I absolutely love this. I cant credit Mendelsohn for being a favorite composer of mine. But this piece keeps blowing me away. Such grace and progression...
Simply a beautiful performance. No such thing as a perfect performance but this was darn close. Absolutely superb!
This is absolutely fantastic. Less and less people nowadays can play this extremely difficult concerto with such an emotion and precision. Thanks to have shared on youtube!
Electric!
And riveting!
Bravo!
The 3rd movement (starting at 12:48) always struck me as cartoon music. It has this element of humor and fun about it which would make it ideal for incorporating into a Bugs Bunny episode. :)
Your Mendelssohn CD collection remains one of my favourite CDs !
i love this concerto so much
Sir Stephen Hough ♡
Superb rendition
Grazie
The piano sounded unusually clear to me so I looked it up and found it to be a new straight strung design. Considering I knew nothing about this innovation, and considering I was motivated to look into it just from its sound, I'm thinking there might be something good in it.
I wonder how Stephen H found it to play.
@@MM-111 No, this is not Barenboim's piano, and it is not a modified Steinway. It is a Chris Maene Straight Strung Concert Grand.
Simply breathtaking!
Echt bewundernswert!
Just thrilling! A friend of mine is preparing to play this next year.
Thank you. Marvellous.
Muchas gracias

The Best Piano Concerto Ever.
I don't think so Mendelssohn
It is great but not the greatest ever written 😢😮
Just Great!
an underrated piece but it belongs to the great romantic piano concertos
Usually when people are coughing I manage to ignore it, but 6:57 is the first time I get very disgusted by the lack of respect the public is showing in such a delicate and sensible moment...
And it goes on and on: 8:34 3:38 9:01 9:54
obviously that was patient zero. Anyway love Stephen Hough, one of the best
Perpeckt played~powerfull & very beautifull sound!!
I've listened to Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto no 1 by a few performers, mostly by Alexandra Govdan... I will always dearly love her version and the deftness and energy displayed by the Sinfonica de Galicia. However, even after listening to the concerto probably a hundred times in recent weeks, Maestro Hough's playing easily passed the "made me cry" test! Like a baby, I was! Masterly! Bravo!
18:26 I like some people smiles hearing the concerto, because i smile too! 😅
_I want to hear more of this piano!_ 😁
Chris Maene straight strung grand piano
Maravilhoso pianista!!!
Stephen Hough rivals Rudolf Serkin who championed this music. Marvelous playing.
Great interpretation🙌🏻🫶🏻❤
I am impressed with the delicacy and cleverness that I can not express every much in words .
Sadness and anxiety disappear,
his performance has a tremendous power to act on my soul .
From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun .
Which national are you watching this video ?
Shin-i-chi Kozima -- Yes....I agree with you completely. BRAVO from San Agustinillo, MEXICO !
Stephen hough♡
So, he was 21 when he wrote this masterpiece. At 21 I was still trying to figure out which end was up in my life...
Soooooo great!
The "parallel strings" piano is magnificent - designed by the Belgian instrument maker Chris Maene, apparently with the collaboratio of Daniel Barenboim.
Finally something I could perhaps play.
7:00
all the old people: aight imma cough both my lungs out
I'm guessing the orchestra is a Dutch orchestra. There must be at least fifty radio orchestras in Europe.
I have many of his excellent recordings. Just a bit surprised by the last two chords which are not in the score. For a youthful and very fresh performance check out Alexandra Dovgan!
15:10 Why does that guy look like Brett?
His rendition of the Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No 1 in D is top-notch. Check out this undeservedly neglected concerto.
Why do people who cough go to concerts?
Attention seeking, perhaps?
:-) :-) :-)
The famous pianst Rubenstein once complained that when he was young sick people went to the doctor but now they came to his concerts
Because these cockneys have 'cough' rhymes with 'Hough'
For a pianist of Stephen Hough's stature this is an equivalent of a 5th grade piano student playing Mozart's Minuet.
He played this at the proms on Queen Victoria's old piano
6:55 OMG, hold that f****** cough! 😂
Most of the coughing, especially the coughing at very crucial and quiet moments, was in B flat major ! This could certainly be improved to a more major key !
Why do they always seem to cough at the quiet parts.... The worst part of a concert is the audience.....
@@anthonyhazlewood5788 -- That said, at least they PAY for tickets and ATTEND. We, on the other hand, are just Mooches and Parasites. How do you look yourself in the mirror, Anthony?
Does anybody know if this is actually the number 2 concerto, but in a different key?
no this is the first concerto mendelssohn composed
Superior!!
who coughed like that???
Why people always have to cough so loudly during the quietest moments ?! 😅
Marvelous pianist but 6:46 creaking building coughing audience ruining the peaceful moment
Great playing, though at times very rushed. Would have been so much better if the pianist had finished with his last chord and let the orchestra have the final phrase as it is written in the score (he was slightly early on the final chord which spoiled the climax).
Thanks for sharing :)
Morir de Jadeo Milei.
15:23 ouch, and then 15:26 that cellist's facial expression is just golden
Some inventive harmony ;)
15:25? :S
Some inventive harmony ;)
@@brianj959 Out of this world :D! But still beautiful played 🌈
Seems like the audience had corona before it was cool
Legal
A great performance for sure, but it sometimes feels a bit heavy and serious. I personally love Alexandra Dovgan’s interpretation of this piece - such a lively and playful rendition of the music, a spectacular show of dynamic and beautiful pianism, and all from a 10 yr old 🤯

Dimitri Bashkirov a class of his own playing Mendelssohn piano concerto no 1 with The Finnish Radio Symphony video from 1989! Bashkirov had the best piano sound! Melodies rolling the best way! Best tempos! All the others bad Mendelssohn players like=Hough(boring bad sound) Yuja Wang(typewriter) Hamelin(Cyborg Human machine) Pletnev(too cool too powerful) Serkin(raw rough) Cziffra(sledgehammer)
If you have a cough please have the humility to stay home, it's not your show
this pianist is amazing, everybody plays very fast, I do not like that.
Tom Hanks?
This is truly a”one of a kind” performance...completely breathtaking and full of passion. M.mendelssohn would have given a standing ovation. M Hough is so humble with quiet emotion...the best!
The playing is great. But the constant coughing really ruins this. It's all throughout the performance, there isn't even a 5 second break between the coughs for the entire performance. Why do these people want to ruin the experience for other people?
His phrasing is a little too ritarded for my taste.
Too rushed, too fast. Not even as good as Alexandra Dovgan.
Faster than Yuja , interesting
TOO FAST, with no subtility.
Understanding of Mendelssohn music = 0.
Last movement has become a bad joke, disappoiting
Since when is choice of tempo anything else then taste? "Understanding of Mendelssohn" is not tempo related.
Besides that, this tempo seems highly appropriate, especially since the marking is Presto (which is around 172 quarter notes a minute).

Be sure that Stephen Hough know exatly how Mendelssohn should be interpreted.
