Very good info indeed, thanks for posting this! Between this and the obsidian rugged 9... still researching 🎉❤ this suppressor looks a big more versatile
I can't see where they experienced the 9 dB sound reduction mentioned on their website. I have the 1st gen Optimus now, but can't see with the info I can now find if there's really enough data to determine if the upgrade is worth the money. Ideal testing for people in my situation would be to not just compare unsuppressed to suppressed, but rather to compare gen 1 to gen 2 on the same gun back to back. Or even better, do 3 tests per rifle: 1st- unsuppressed 2nd- Gen 1, 3rd- Gen 2
They used to list some SPL numbers on their website but they're gone now. Only caliber and barrel length was listed and that's still there but with XXX. I still have those numbers and they were all lower than what they are showing in this video. I commented about it along with a pic for comparison. I'm eagerly awaiting an explanation....even though the upgrade money is spent and mine is on its way there now.
@@MattCA88 Sorry, I didn't use the original enough to be able to say. Haven't really used the new much either. Still no back to back or independent tests as far as I know.
Great job using a scientific approach. What does "significant improvement" equate to in terms of decibals? For example, what's the dB reduction from the Optimus gen 1 to gen 2 baffles for 9mm using same rounds/host?
Legislators and media should be required to review this video to understand that a suppressor does not turn a firearm into a ghostly silent killing machine.
Griffin: You really need to get those comparison numbers up. The only ones available for Gen 1 are from Silencer Shop in the Modern Rifleman database. Although not identical firearms, the numbers listed for the most similar firearm and load to these test results do not look good. In every case the Gen 1 had better attenuation muzzle to ear compared to the Gen 2. *Muzzle to ear attenuation is the only value listed in the database. I entered the info from this video to compare. The SPL numbers from the vid are also HIGHER than the Gen 1 SPL numbers that used to be listed on your website on the Optimus page. Those numbers have been removed since the Gen 2 came out. Great question. Significant improvements in at ear performance across calibers. Calibers that before were not "hearing safe" now are. Backpressure is reduced greatly and in turn, semi-auto cycling is also softer and more reliable.
@@GriffinArmamentOfficial Can you please provide some side by side numbers to quantify this for us? I'd love to purchase, but need to justify the wants part of my brain with the rational side that's saying "why?" Love your products and your podcast FYI.
What do I need to mount it on my Ruger SR22??? I've been E-Mailing Griffin with no response. This is my first silencer and I'd prefer not to order the wrong thing haha
The new one comes with a CAM-LOK piston instead of 1/2-28 direct thread piston. You have a couple options. One is a CAM-LOK adapter to thread onto your barrel which should be 1/2-28 RH thread. You will also need the Revolution fixed barrel spacer that replaces the spring in the booster assembly to prevent the piston from moving since your pistol is a fixed barrel. The two of those are $90. Another option is the $85 Revolution fixed mount. You would not need the fixed barrel spacer with that as it replaces the booster assembly completely and allows direct thread onto fixed barrel firearms. You can often find Griffin accessories a little cheaper on Optics Planet and other websites.
@@de629 hey thanks for the reply. I figured out that they sent me the new cam-lok attachment for my booster piston. I had to purchase the 1/2x28 cam lok thread adapter.
@@NoViews1975 that's what I ended up finding out on the Facebook site a while ago. Still waiting for the fixed barrel spacer to come back in stock though. Thanks for the reply!!!
@@r.t.hannah9575 Hansohn Brothers makes one for $25, in stock. It's really nothing but a piece of pipe and in my opinion Griffin equips this "universal" suppressor very poorly. I believe there was originally only suppressor/silencer called the Optimus. That was for 9mm as well as rifle calibers up to 300 Win Mag. I have this item. They then came out with the Micro Optimus in .22 caiber that is rated from .22 up to 22-250 for a versatile item that wasn't meant for larger calibers. @@briterobert Is the regular Optimus worth buying for everything? Or do you think it would be better to buy the micro to run on 5.7 pistol, 22, and 223 and buy a separate surrpressor for larger calibers?
FedEx and UPS both quote $24 for ground with $1200 declared value for me. Griffin's email says "$125 upgrade" then links to website where minimum price is $150 plus $10 shipping charge plus my shipping charge so technically 50% more than what they've been saying for a couple months. My Optimus leaves tomorrow. *Update - Griffin only provides a PO Box for shipping which means you have one shipping option: USPS. It was $29 to ship mine from SC with $1200 insurance coverage. So the originally advertised $125 upgrade is now at $189.

One of my questions as well. To quote a nerdy 80's movie "Need more input!" ha ha...
SPL numbers that have been removed from Griffin Optimus website for Gen 1. Discuss.
Full size config
20" .308 = 137dB
14.5" 5.56mm = 134dB
12" 300BLK = 126dB
Short Config
12" 300BLK = 137dB
9mm Glock 17 = 132dB
.22lr pistol = 123dB
.22lr rifle = 117dB
