That Acid Rain pedal does get you close to the sound. Ethan of Primitive Man told me that he just uses amp distortion with no pedals boosting it. He puts his modulation and delay pedals straight into the front of the amps. I know he was using an Orange Thunderverb and a Mesa Boogie Dual Rec in the early days of Primitive Man but I think he's now using Dean Costello Amps
Wild, love this one! Killer video. I managed to catch Primitive Man in Toronto over the summer and my ears are still recovering from the awesomeness. Love their heaviness and how they are able to smartly add in some harsh noise elements. Thanks for posting this!
I love Primitive Man! Still need to see them live. I saw Vermin Womb which is Ethan's grind band with Full Of Hell, Blood Incantation, Mortous, and God Is War.
When I saw "Death Sludge" in the title I immediately thought of Rippikoulu.. Brutal tones by the way. I like your channel because it helps me discover awesome groups in the doom/sludge/stoner genres that I haven't heard of.
If you like Rippikoulu (them Playing Old School Death Metal) and you are into "Death Sludge" you really need do check out Gateway-Shores of Daruk for example. (Because he is hard to find without the Song Title) ah...! Just look at my Playlists. He plays Medieval Doom Death btw....
Oh man, didn't expect this one to drop. Sick! On a sidenote, Primitive Man was probably the loudest, heaviest band I've ever seen live , aside Sunn. Just absolutely insane shit. Also cool to see you tackle tremolo picking. I've been trying to get better at it myself for a time now and I'm slowly making progress. I've become rather fond of Dunlop Flow Picks (the 1.5mm one in particular), or the Dava Delrin Grip Picks for trem picking and general playing. I feel like you're generally better off with a Jazz style pick at any rate.
Motorhead still is the loudest for me. I've seen Primitive Man twice now and put them at 4th loudest for me. Weedeater is the 2nd and YOB is 3rd. I will say that the venue plays a huge part in a band being loud though when people bring this topic up
My favorite picks for tremolo picking, and frankly everything are the Dunlop Ultex 2.0mm Jazz III. Very long lasting, good feel, perfect size for me. I've been using Jazz III size since the 90s. The best way I've found to get better at tremolo picking is to start with a metronome and get used to doing 16th notes at progressively faster tempos. Over time you'll build the muscles for it. I also try to remain as loose as possible too. If i tighten my wrist / forearm, it's energy wasted and I can't do those tremolo parts for as long as I want to. Just my 2 cents. And more primitive man videos please. I've seen them a handful of times now and they are loud, and quite the experience to behold.
Ernie Ball 1.5mm prodigy picks are what I use for tremolo picking. I go for an angled approach for picking so that I get less resistance from the string.
Hell yeah! Somehow managed to overlook these guys! So heavy! Love it. Been leaning towards a combination of sludge and death metal in my riffing lately so this is an awesome discovery. Thanks! Might need even more gain though!
Steve! Great video man. I love, love, fucking love seeing you giving lessons on the is super extreme content. Myself, with regards to tremolo picking-I use a Jazz III and try to ground myself somewhere on the guitar and focus on the wrist because my arm tires out fast otherwise! Lol!
I’m not sure-I will look when I get home, I know they’re rigid as hell though! You know what was kind of cool, I found this pick, I know ‘special designer picks’ can seem a little gimmicky, but they’re called ‘attak picks’. Spendy, I got a sampler pack of them to try, they have an incredible grip depression with raised dots inside it that keeps it grounded while I tremolo pick. I should dig up the link-I found them on IG a while ago and gave it a shot. Cool pick
I use Cool brand Cat Tongue picks. 1.0 mm. The baby blue colored ones. I used to use the 1.3 mm but I switched because it was easier to tremolo pick with the 1.0 and they are more versatile across genres. Without question my favorite pick I’ve ever used in 25 years of playing guitar
About the picks. Try the Jim Root Dunlop pick. Great nylon texture, nice grip with Jim's number in Slipknot. Great pick, I like it for faster parts in my songs
Yo! Sick vid as always. I’ve been in a Surf band for a couple years and got a pretty good technique going on for tremolo picking. Letting your wrist do all the work is the key. To get my forearm involved the least as possible I play my guitar slung HELLA low. Got this idea from CJ Ramone who talked about tremolo picking on Ramones songs. For picks, I love the Dunlop flow standard. I like them heavy. With the pick perpendicular to the pickguard. Easy money! Lol.
I have worked in and around these genres for the better part of 11 years. I have seen hundreds of bands over the years. I can always find something I enjoy about a band’s work. However PM, while sonically fascinating, I don’t enjoy the bands music. It’s not that I think the band is bad or untalented, its truly the first time a band in these genres that didn’t do it for me. For once I actually didn’t get it.
Hey, I'm sure it is part of the sound of the genre but I must say to me it sounds like even with these thick strings it's a struggle to not sound out of tune. This is balancing a fine line of where a tone just becomes noise.
@@DoesItDoom Fair enough. I've just listened to Primitive Man (The Lifer) for the first time ever because of you and man.... the only way I can describe their sound is "like being buried under a ton of bricks". So thick and heavy. Thanks for introducing me to that :p
Lots of time spent watching loads of live concert footage here on RUclips lol. This one was tricky, but I think we got it close. Ethan from PM was kind enough to look over the TAB as well.
Have a good day , tell me please is it possible to make similar effects in a programme Guitar Rig 5 ? can you make a video on this topic? Thanks and greetings from Russia !
Have to file the nut slots and bridge saddles to properly accommodate the strings. Have to bore out the 6th string tuning machine in some cases as well.
This video brought me to primitive man. I'm so damn greatfull I watched it a year ago. As for tremolo picking, I use basically the same thing only I prefer blackfangs. Not a fan of the grip ridges myself.
Hi ! I'd like to use that kind of low tuning (Drop G or G#) but should I stick to a regular scale length guitar or should I go for a Baryton guitar in your opinion ? Cheers !
24.75” will be hard to intonate at or below G#. 25.5” will do fine at Drop G. Baritone will give you more tension without any intonation issues, they also tend to have a tighter low end / more clarity. Just depends what you’re after.
This is one of their Custom Shop DC-6 models that were built by their small custom shop that used to exist in Boston. Same style of guitar that was built for Matt Pike, Bill Kelliher, Brent Hinds etc during that era.
@@DoesItDoom I played bass for 25 years before picking up the guitar. my fingers are so strong from playing bass that I keep reminding myself that when Im tuned that low you cant beat on it like you can on bass! lol
I believe they made some sort of Instagram post jokingly referring to themselves as “Death Sludge”. Thats where I got the thumbnail from. Seems fitting to me. More fitting than “Doom” at least.
Excellent guide as always man, if I can offer one piece of advice it's to just turn up the guitar a bit compared to your voice for these super downtuned tracks.
The Judas from Acid Rain Pedalworks is available again today! Check it out here: acidrainpedalworks.bigcartel.com/product/the-judas
I just KNEW Primitive Man would show up here eventually. One of, if not THE, heaviest band in existence.
Hard to imagine anything much heavier.

Enjoy!
Crowbar, primitive man, and bodybox in Richmond VA in 2 days, I'm stoked 🤘🤘
Tonight in Columbia, SC!
You should do a Khanate lesson one day! It'll probably be hard with all the silence between riffs, but a cool challenge!

I use Dunlop gator 2 mm most of the time when I'm playing a lot of tremolo picking, love the grip texture
Speaking of low tuning, my SG is in C# standard with a set of 009s! An open E chord sounds like a bunch of wobbly springs 😁
