We take a drive around Castlemaine and surrounds visiting many of the abandoned places that once serviced the area from the Gold Mining era.
From Castlemaine we visit Barkers Creek, Chewton, Fryerstown, Vaughan, Yapeen, Guildford and Mopoke Gully. Visiting abandoned Goldfields, huts, a grave, water wheels and shops.
Taking a tour around the Castlemaine district came up with a few interesting surprises from the Gold Rush era. Commencing from the abandoned remains of the Garfield Wheel in Chewton. Built in 1887. The Garfield mine had a long lease of life, it opened up in 1866 and worked until 1911.
Our next stop is the abandoned Water Gully Goldmine. The reefs in the floor have been worked as early as 1853. The first company began in 1859. A remarkable accident of fate led Wattle Gully to become one of the richest gold mines in Victoria.
As we continue our journey we visit the grave of Elizabeth Escott. In very good order it expresses the hardships of that period. There are descendants of the family still living in the area today.
At Herons Reef there is an abandoned Miners Cottage which was difficult to find, as well a forge and a few other old relics of the Gold Rush period.
As we approach the township of Fryerstown on the right is the abandoned Duke of Cornwall Mine and its impressive Engine House. Which is now been preserved with a new roof.
We leave Fryerstown, which we will explore another time and make our way to Vaughan Mineral Springs which was set aside in 1878. In 1925 they commenced putting amenities in the park. The mineral waters have benefits to one's health that is lacking in today's processed foods.
We continue to Yapeen to pass John Smith's General Store and Hotel, long gone ar the days that this establishment served any drinks.
Just for something different we visit the Big River Gum Tree in Guilford, with its massive girth and span, being impressive, it hard to understand that during the gold rush period it escaped the axe as many trees in the surrounding area was used for building or firewood.
Out last stop is at the Mopoke Water Wheel, just as impressive as its counterpart the Garfield Wheel, but slightly smaller in scale. It was built around the same time.
Join us as we discover these abandoned places.

Wow such an amazing journey to the past! Great collection of old abandoned places. Unfortunately at that time the people used to die much earlier than the present days. The old mines still even have some equioment left 👍20

Loved this so much!! You are so good at being tour guides this video wws another one of your best we learned so much while being entertained. The music was spot on it went so well with the tour and location being all the gold mining areas. The drone footage over that mine was superb! Loved those graphics of the miner looking forn gold. Ruby was so adorable just going along with you while u walked and talked. We always pove the way you drive the car on the map location. Great work on the history and stories about the area and when you talked about the history I think u stood by Elizabeths tomb stone very nice job. This whole area was actually really well maintained relics we did love going along with you!! Excellent work!!😊
