Hemp insulation helps with little visitors as they do not like the hemp at all. Hemp allows your walls to breathe and is environmentally friendly.. So nice to what you do and how you do it.
In my family homes in Portugal, two of them older constructions as well, we used extruded polystyrene, 50mm thick, on top of the unused attic's floor (not attached to the beams). Easy to handle (weight), to trim and to fit. On top, relatively cheap. You might consider that attached to the smaller beams, and afterwards using a smart material to cover it, only leaving the beautiful, larger beams exposed. Mineral wool is even better at insulating, and also offers the advantage of being fireproof, but is very tricky to handle, due to hazard particles quickly filling up the air during handling. Only used that once, and although marveled now, still remember the application with bitter memories.
You have to have the hearts and strengths of renovation warriors to tackle such a huge project, not to mention the budget. I commend you both as I know you both will make this place an amazing home. The new roof looks awesome. I look forward to more videos.
Thank you so much Peter. Sometimes the work is very overwhelming and beyond our capabilities, but thankfully we have been working with a great builder who always guides us well.
Oh NO!! $$$$$$$$$$$$ But you must keep it dry, above all else. Just now able to start at the beginning of your journey and I must say, this almost stops my heart! But the new roof is just beautiful and good for the next hundred years. This puts a dent in the budget for sure! The finials are just lovely and the fireplaces, so clever to save the expense since the scaffolding was already up! You have done the most important thing, the Roof! 👏👏👏👏👏 Now you can proceeded as your budget allows. Your home/investment is dry and secure. The rest will come at it’s own pace. You are lovely people and assured of success. Bit by bit. ❤
Thanks so so much again for the lovely comment. We are so relieved with the roof, and feeling we have made a great move for the structure and future of the house.
ouaah courageux et vrai qu'une ancienne batisse beaucoup de renovation surprise.....courage...et vous avez choisi une belle region ..great project for you and welcome to France..
First of all, welcome to my beloved France and even more beloved France's South West. I hope you will find joy and happiness in your challenging but charming house. If I may I will suggest you to watch the videos (from the beginning) of Escape to the dream, Restoring the Château. Plenty to learn from including insulating ceiling, walls and such. I am sure Terry, Ash or Tony might even give you advice about on "how to do". Good luck to you both. I will keep watching your progress.
Hi,I saw no tops on the chimneys, surely the rain will pour down inside the chimney,I bought an old flat once where there was no top on the chimney and rain over the years just turned the inside render to sludge,I had to get men to go up and put tops but the tops style depends on if you will have gas, wood or and coal fumes coming out of the chimney, this was a law on what fumes were coming out. What a fantastic hard job you got done, its sensational x
Great choice on the slightly distressed roof tiles & the new zinc gutter system! Looks great! You are so calm in how you describe things unfolding - I'm sure it didn't feel that way as these challenges arose. Will you guys be moving to France permanently?
Haha yes we definitely were not as calm when it was all happening, but we had to reassure ourselves any work we did on the structure was the best investment. Just uploaded a new video where we briefly explain how we share our time between France and Helsinki. Just juggling our time between both at the moment.
Hello and glad to meet you ! I agree with watching escape to the dream and following this family who have incredible results w Hich you will appreciate...coming from a very hot Australia it pays to insulate heavily against heat same as you do the cold...look forward to your progress xx
Thanks Carol for your support. Will definitely be looking up all these great renovators to inspire us as we go. With our summers often over 40 degrees Celsius its good to think about blocking the heat up there also.
The two of you are so courageous. You dare to take risk and that strength and courage came from being together as partners in life and in love. You guys are marvelous! I cannot wait to see the rest of the renovation. I love yoru priority, gardening come first. Lol!
Thank you so much! We like it too. We truly have managed to start renovation in other rooms too, although had some later accidents with a leak... :( We will explain them in the following videos...
I meant to watch through your vlogs since finding the channel, just doing that now. If you still want advice re insulation, in your latest vlog you mention converting the roof space - to preserve maximum height, you might want to use a multilayer quilt that will be thinner and more efficient than more usual types of insulation material. Should be available in bricos, France is pretty good that way.
Good luck on your journey! You will do fine…. Just be patient! I watch many Chateau channels, make friends there and get help and advice! Blessing to you two!
If you look at the time 3:35 it looks like the membrane was not completely sealed. you can see the sagging in it, to the right of the ladder and up just past the gable window. Jeff
I’ve just discovered your channel. Congratulations on finding your new home. Love your style of presentation, very calming. 😊 As you have a house, may I recommend the channel ‘French House Adventure’ which I’m sure you will relate to more than many of the château channels. Alex is a very skilled builder, which you’ll be able to learn lots from. His style is very to the point, with very little talking (very refreshing). Hope this helps. Looking forward to following your journey. Good Luck. Pauline, Sheffield UK.
Wool is best for insulation as it breathes but it is pricey. You could alternatively use the foil backed flexible insulation, which is quite thin but really affective and allows more head height when you plaster board over the top. Considering this was 7 months ago ( I just noticed) it’s likely all done by now. All the best to you both
Hemp as someone else said is a great idea, you can buy hemp blocks, bit pricy is hemp BUT its not the fire risk that other non organic insulation is,rember that if you have electrical wring in the loft any thick insulation makes the temperature around the wiring increase possible to cause fire so sometimes electrical wriring in roof space with increases insulation must be changed for thicker wiring so as to not get hot,you can get some really good swedish insulation, look on line which can be shipped,I like only one that wont exasperate toxic fumes in the event of a fire oorjust speed up burning.
Roof looks great. Have you come across the you tube channel "Jenny's Chateau farm" ? She is in the Charente and will probably have info on insulating the roof etc. It's a lovely channel.
Thanks Margie. Haven't delved too deep yet into the insulation aisles at the hardware store so I am not sure if they have it in France. Must have a look though when next there. Thanks so much for the tip.
Renewing the whole roof is the best use of your renovation budget.
So glad you did it.
Yes we are so happy we did it, and also it came early enough that we had the budget to do it!
The roof and zinc guttering look great
Thanks so much. We love how it turned out too!
Best thing to do was a new roof repoint the chimney and new roof lights, you will never have to think about it ever again 😂😂😂
Very happy to have the new roof
Roof and electrics, that's essential. Love the roof!
Thanks so much Lumi!
The new roof looks stunning ❤ and Fantastic that you have had all the electrics done too!
Yes so delighted with the roof!!
I'm binge watching your videos on this gloomy Sunday afternoon. It's making my afternoon less gloomy :)
Oh so glad to hear you are enjoying the videos!

Thank you Caroline so much. We will definitely look into the hemp, sound like it could be a good solution.
It’s delightful to watch this journey and see your progress, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Dennis!!
What beautiful work you've done. You are beyond patient, but it will be worth it in the long run.
Thanks Irene. A wonderful and enjoyable journey!!

Thanks so much for the advice. Really appreciate it. I can only imagine handling the wool, quite a tricky job to be sure.

A massive job, but it certainly looks beautiful. Best wishes.
Yes, it certainly was a huge project but so happy we now have a safe and sound roof :)
Looks great….you really fell lucky with your builder too!
We thankfully have been very lucky!

Hi Michele, sorry we have been so late in replying to this. Yes the chimneys are something we HAVE to look at soon, a good project for the summer.

The new roof looks gorgeous. With the roof now installed hopefully interior renovations can move forward without leaks ruining your progress.
Thank you so much! We like it too. We truly have managed to start renovation in other rooms too, although had some later accidents with a leak... :( We will explain them in the following videos...
I love renovations
Lots more to come!! :)
Hello from Nashville, Tennessee! Best of luck with your new home! I can't wait to see what all you do! Have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you Fred for the kind words. Lots of work ahead but feeling blessed we can do it.
Such a wonderful video and house! Call me overly imaginative, but now I am picturing your lovely home as a festive gingerbread house !
Clint, you must be a psychic!! :)
I love your story! I look forward to continuing your journey with you through your videos.
Thank you Thomas. Glad to have you along with us.
The roof looks great. Insulating the attic will be an easy task just look up youtube videos and you will be ok.
Yes we look forward to making it more comfortable. We think it will be a great space.

Thanks Leigh! Yes we have seen her lovely videos and have connected with her through instagram also. Must ask her about the roof.
Sink gutters will age beautifully
Yes, we think so too, they always look classic
Not sure if France has bubble foil insulation in the north USA its used in cabins check out RUclips off grid cabins
Thanks Margie. Haven't delved too deep yet into the insulation aisles at the hardware store so I am not sure if they have it in France. Must have a look though when next there. Thanks so much for the tip.
