Hemp insulation helps with little visitors as they do not like the hemp at all. Hemp allows your walls to breathe and is environmentally friendly.. So nice to what you do and how you do it.

Thank you Caroline so much. We will definitely look into the hemp, sound like it could be a good solution.

In my family homes in Portugal, two of them older constructions as well, we used extruded polystyrene, 50mm thick, on top of the unused attic's floor (not attached to the beams). Easy to handle (weight), to trim and to fit. On top, relatively cheap. You might consider that attached to the smaller beams, and afterwards using a smart material to cover it, only leaving the beautiful, larger beams exposed.
Mineral wool is even better at insulating, and also offers the advantage of being fireproof, but is very tricky to handle, due to hazard particles quickly filling up the air during handling. Only used that once, and although marveled now, still remember the application with bitter memories.

    • @charenteliving
      @charenteliving  Год назад

Thanks so much for the advice. Really appreciate it. I can only imagine handling the wool, quite a tricky job to be sure.

Oh NO!! $$$$$$$$$$$$ But you must keep it dry, above all else. Just now able to start at the beginning of your journey and I must say, this almost stops my heart! But the new roof is just beautiful and good for the next hundred years.
This puts a dent in the budget for sure! The finials are just lovely and the fireplaces, so clever to save the expense since the scaffolding was already up! You have done the most important thing, the
    Roof! 👏👏👏👏👏
Now you can proceeded as your budget allows. Your home/investment is dry and secure.
The rest will come at it’s own pace. You are lovely people and assured of success.
    Bit by bit. ❤

First of all, welcome to my beloved France and even more beloved France's South West. I hope you will find joy and happiness in your challenging but charming house. If I may I will suggest you to watch the videos (from the beginning) of Escape to the dream, Restoring the Château. Plenty to learn from including insulating ceiling, walls and such. I am sure Terry, Ash or Tony might even give you advice about on "how to do". Good luck to you both. I will keep watching your progress.

Hi,I saw no tops on the chimneys, surely the rain will pour down inside the chimney,I bought an old flat once where there was no top on the chimney and rain over the years just turned the inside render to sludge,I had to get men to go up and put tops but the tops style depends on if you will have gas, wood or and coal fumes coming out of the chimney, this was a law on what fumes were coming out. What a fantastic hard job you got done, its sensational x

Great choice on the slightly distressed roof tiles & the new zinc gutter system! Looks great! You are so calm in how you describe things unfolding - I'm sure it didn't feel that way as these challenges arose. Will you guys be moving to France permanently?

Haha yes we definitely were not as calm when it was all happening, but we had to reassure ourselves any work we did on the structure was the best investment. Just uploaded a new video where we briefly explain how we share our time between France and Helsinki. Just juggling our time between both at the moment.

I meant to watch through your vlogs since finding the channel, just doing that now. If you still want advice re insulation, in your latest vlog you mention converting the roof space - to preserve maximum height, you might want to use a multilayer quilt that will be thinner and more efficient than more usual types of insulation material. Should be available in bricos, France is pretty good that way.

If you look at the time 3:35 it looks like the membrane was not completely sealed.
you can see the sagging in it, to the right of the ladder and up just past
    the gable window.

I’ve just discovered your channel. Congratulations on finding your new home. Love your style of presentation, very calming. 😊 As you have a house, may I recommend the channel ‘French House Adventure’ which I’m sure you will relate to more than many of the château channels. Alex is a very skilled builder, which you’ll be able to learn lots from. His style is very to the point, with very little talking (very refreshing). Hope this helps. Looking forward to following your journey. Good Luck. Pauline, Sheffield UK.

Wool is best for insulation as it breathes but it is pricey. You could alternatively use the foil backed flexible insulation, which is quite thin but really affective and allows more head height when you plaster board over the top. Considering this was 7 months ago ( I just noticed) it’s likely all done by now. All the best to you both

Hemp as someone else said is a great idea, you can buy hemp blocks, bit pricy is hemp BUT its not the fire risk that other non organic insulation is,rember that if you have electrical wring in the loft any thick insulation makes the temperature around the wiring increase possible to cause fire so sometimes electrical wriring in roof space with increases insulation must be changed for thicker wiring so as to not get hot,you can get some really good swedish insulation, look on line which can be shipped,I like only one that wont exasperate toxic fumes in the event of a fire oorjust speed up burning.
