New Louisiana law requires display of ten commandments in classrooms

Louisiana has become the first state to require that the Ten Commandments be displayed in every public school classroom under a bill signed into law by Republican Gov. Jeff Landry on Wednesday.
The GOP-drafted legislation mandates that a poster-sized display of the Ten Commandments in “large, easily readable font” be required in all public classrooms, from kindergarten to state-funded universities. Although the bill did not receive final approval from Landry, the time for gubernatorial action - to sign or veto the bill - has lapsed.
Opponents question the law’s constitutionality, warning that lawsuits are likely to follow. Proponents say the purpose of the measure is not solely religious, but that it has historical significance. In the law’s language, the Ten Commandments are described as “foundational documents of our state and national government.”
The displays, which will be paired with a four-paragraph “context statement” describing how the Ten Commandments “were a prominent part of American public education for almost three centuries,” must be in place in classrooms by the start of 2025.
The posters would be paid for through donations. State funds will not be used to implement the mandate, based on language in the legislation.
The law also “authorizes” - but does not require - the display of the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence and the Northwest Ordinance in K-12 public schools.

The reason other posters with rules weren't obeyed is that they didn't have transcendent authority behind them. It was "some person says." Human rules are taken seriously if people understand that authority ultimately comes from God. It's amazing how if the 10 commandments were obeyed, so many social evils would be solved.

We have separation of church and state for a reason. A big reason that our country was founded (and even exists today) is because of British folk running from religious persecution and taxation of England. Our forefathers made it abundantly clear in our constitution that they did not want religion playing any role whatsoever.

Governor PeeWee Herman - I mean Jeff Landry - is going to go down as the worst governor in the history of Louisiana - and we’ve seen some bad ones come through in the last 100 years - from the ineptitude and incompetence of Kathleen Blanco and Bobby Jindal as leaders to the decent leaders but morally corrupt politicians like Edwin Edwards, who ended up in prison and Huey Long who thought of himself as a King - (remind you of anyone?.) Decency and morals are something that should be taught in the home by the parents not at schools. Especially when the teachers are not given to tools required to succeed in educating the students

We weren't founded by Christians, the founding fathers were not Christian or their religious practices were unknown, nowhere in the Constitution does it say we are a Christian nation, the words Creator appear in the Declaration of Independence (which is not a legal document).

The Governor should also remember the first law of the nation - the Constitution. In general, I do not oppose the 10 Commandments, but the people of LA should also accept a similar summary from the Buddhists, Muslim, Confucianism and maybe even Satanism. That is what our founding fathers intended by the separation of church and state. A generic form of the 10 commandments could be accepted - but why do children need to be reminded daily about adultery?? I also suspect that the teacher is correct in her assessment that the money could be spent in better ways to help the children of LA. Finally, putting up the 10 commandments does not hurt anyone and we need to stop all the "Safe Space" rhetoric. We also need to stop the "we were doing this for 50 years before" therefore it is good. It is not a valid argument. I think all classrooms should have the quote from IROQUOIS LAW (that pre-dates the constitution in North America) - “IN OUR EVERY DELIBERATION, WE MUST CONSIDER THE IMPACT OF OUR DECISIONS ON THE NEXT SEVEN GENERATIONS.”
