Back with another Octopath Traveler II harp cover! (I kind of can't believe how long it took me to get this out, but what else is new 😅)
When Octopath 2 came out earlier this year, of course my brain went "wow this soundtrack is amazing!!" and then immediately to "which songs should I cover?"
Unlike with the first Octopath Traveler game, the character themes from Octopath 2 seemed much more difficult to translate to solo harp. Castti and Agnea stuck out to me right away as tracks I could cover (Agnea will come later but as usual I am slow); with Hikari, it seemed melodic enough that I could make it work... but then I didn't really know what to do. The lush orchestral texture adds so much majesty to the original, so how could I possibly make anything close to matching that energy on the harp?
Well, I sat down at my computer with the harp next to me, and then immediately after saying to myself "I have no ideas," the first section of the song just kind of came out of my fingers. I decided to focus on octaves in both hands rather than trying to fill everything up with notes and try to sound like an orchestra, which I didn't think I could really do. Instead, the sparser texture with octave doublings gives it a sort of power and clarity that I liked.
The middle section was the perfect opportunity for a couple of harp techniques - some sons etouffees to mimic the string pizz/plucked string instruments from the original, and the end of the section I use a 2-handed trill on a B natural and C flat string to emulate the sound of what I think is a guzheng at the end of the section of the original.
I hope you enjoy the cover! It certainly was an interesting challenge and a little different from the more relaxing stuff I usually play.

I love hearing the differences in the way each cover artist I've seen doing Octoath II stuff is taking each track, both because of creative visions and having to make it woek for their instrument. Well done, this is a lovely rendition. To me, it sounds like it could be the (slightly) simplified tavern (or relaxing...or both) version of his theme.
