This was one of my absolute favorites from that era of the Beatles. I played it a lot in high school for some reason and I always loved when it came to this song. I included it on an 8-track compilation I gave to my high-school girlfriend and she grew to love this stuff as well. And the John Lennon harmony also truly makes it. Also that incredibly rhythmic acoustic guitar strumming against Ringo doing that fast hi-hat clip. And it's great that it has that middle section that unloads and rocks out for a minute before settling back into this serious somber atmospheric emotional texture.

It's not Lennon, it's a second McCartney vocal.

Nice! This song came up in my playlist yesterday and it led me to wonder if you had reacted to it yet. And then today, here you are with it! "Things We Said Today" represents The Beatles in their stride, with their style in place along with their confidence.

Like All My loving from their previous album, Things We Said Today is Paul harmonizing to himself. When the Beatles embarked on their late summer 1964 North American Tour, both of these songs were included. George handled the harmony vocal on both song very deftly. The minor/major motif used during Things We Said Today can be traced back to another favorite song of Paul's. That song being Besame Mucho, performed by The Coasters. Besame Mucho was the first song the Beatles recorded on their first trip to EMI on June 6 1962, with Pete Best playing drums. They last performed it on the bands final trip to Hamburg (with Ringo this time) at the very end of 1962. They didn't return to it till they were kicking songs around during the Get Back sessions in Jan 1969. RNB

Yes, but the version she's reacting to is the much later remastered version. When they did the second part of the recording to lay down the overdubs which included Paul's second part, singing mostly unison with himself, but also some harmonies, along with Ringo's tambourine and John playing piano on a separate track. The decided not to use the piano part, so they simply cut the volume on that track. However, the piano wasn't isolated so some of it was picked up on the vocal microphones. If you listen closely to the original stereo mix you can faintly hear John's piano in the background.

@@ptournas Hi Peter. Paul uses a similar self- doubling vocal treatment on And I Love Her, Cheers, RNB

That was the flip side of my first Beatles single I ever bought (main side being A Hard Day's Night). That sound fascinated me then ... and still does now 👌 Cool that you react to this song Cimdy 👍😊👏👏👏

Bob Dylan chose this gem as his tribute to Paul on the tribute album to Paul but stick with The Beatles with this one!!

Yeah you got to go with that you know it's so cool is Paul McCartney's local is double tracked and it's just such a great sound it was pretty much of modern new thing to do they might have been one of the first ones to really do this sort of thing you know George Martin was such a genius anyhow then the later on his vocals are in Harmony and then it goes back to being in unision and who doesn't love those acoustic guitars? Yeah and then of course the verse goes into a another thing and gives it a different feel

I was listing to Pachilli's comments of John's guitar work on WE CAN WORK IT OUT. It sounds so simple but John is sort of infamous for making simple rhythms so complex (GET BACK is another example). There is also a good discussion of how WE CAN seems like such a Paul song (and it is) but John's inserts and fills as well as that 'middle 8' are examples of how they co-wrote fantastic music. THINGS WE SAID TODAY seems to be another excellent sample. When I've seen Paul perform this song live in these last 10-15 years, his hired-gun guitarists (fantastic ones) play this acoustic rhythm most of hte time... one performance has Paul starting off with it, but the song ends with the other guitarists completing that very fast wrist-action 4-strum chord.

And once more, I assume Paul and Jane Asher are the ones saying things 'today', just as in WE CAN WORK IT OUT and several others. But THINGS goes 'all dreamy' and then gets a bit rocker with that middle-8, then back to dreamy again. And Cimdy's swoons fit millions of girls listening to this on AM radios.
