If you wanna know why the live action One Piece adaptation succeeded was because Eiichiro Oda. (The creator himself)
Despite being executive producer, his presence and decisions were strong. The man is very protective of his craft and won't let *anyone* tarnish it.
If only ATLA had One Piece's quality.

_The man is very protective of his craft and won't let anyone tarnish it_
... as are Mike and Bryan but they were tricked. Imagine Oda being tricked after giving permission. Then they shut him out and then what? They make a terrible show with his name on it (at least partly) A nightmare I'm telling you.

I honestly don't understand why though. If the netflix people wanted to have their line followed, this should have happened in both the live actions. But Oda stayed and made the people follow his direction. So it is not like Netflix is some kind of dictature where things must be done in certain ways. I feel like the creators of the cartoon were not collaborative at all, maybe they wanted exclusive direction over everything. What I'm trying to say is that if Netflix is bad, it is always bad.

@@hemmojito I think Oda was contractual binding, because Netflix had to go head over heels to convince him to make live action, and he said that only way was he has creative rights.

Katara breaking aang out of the ice was so important. If you notice throughout the show, katara is a prodigy and when he enotions flair, its always related to the cracking and hardening ice.
    1. She busts aang out of frustration towards sokka.
    2. She cracks the ground because the water master in the north refused to yrain her at the time.
    3. She creates ice shards oit of killing intent towards the fire bender who took away Kataras mother.
Katara's temper is so important to the story and its a real shame aang was taken out of the ice some other way.

    • @IsraelLlerena
      @IsraelLlerena 5 месяцев назад +2

Is it ever explained how the iceberg was opened? When I watched the live action, I assumed Katara trying to bring in the canoe was her kind of creating a suction around her, making even the ice Berg behind her break from the suction Katara was pulling towards herself. It made sense since Katara accidentally bends backwards in the first episode of the animation. But yeaaaaaa I’m not sure.

  • @corey316

I watched the original show after the live-action adaptation to see the differences that everyone was talking about. My biggest concern is definitely how they decided to portray Katara as a whole. Aang and Katara's relationship is so crucial for the story going forward. It was a terrible idea to push their relationship aside for this long. In season 2, the writing gets so much tighter, and there is so much more character development. Not to mention, more characters in general. They cannot afford any mistakes, and they've already made quite a few. They have A LOT of work to do to salvage this show now. They CAN do it, but unfortunately, I doubt they will.

Personally I hate how the show just starts with Aang leaving cause the Cave episode did a great job of showing how the Storm reminded Aang of why he’s so afraid to be the Avatar and they also do that by showing a parallel with Zukkos backstory. When Katara and Sokka found him it made it more believable cause the audience just met him too. It takes the intrigue out of it

This show is, by far, the most divisive show I've ever seen.
And I'm not talking about liking or disliking it. I'm talking about every specific detail.
You dislike the show, but like some parts, such as Zuko and Aang's extended conversation, or Azula/Ozai's new relation dynamic. I've seen a lot of people who absolutely hate those changes. You dislike the episode merger in episode 3, but my friend absolutely loved it and it was his favorite part.
Just a few examples. Every single addition or change has a rabid fanbase, and a rabid haterbase.
My personal hot take is, I hate the 41st Division change. It feels heartwarming at first, but then you notice it completely goes against Ozai's character to essentially "punish" Zuko with EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTED IN THE FIRST PLACE. And, what, you'll throw away all your plans and sacrifice another, more experienced division just to "spite" Zuko? When in fact you're doing nothing but rewarding him? That's extremely stupid, and Ozai is extremely cunning in the OG ATLA. Complete character assassination.
On a related note, Ozai in here is more 3 dimensional, but he loses his charm and his strength, and basically ruins Zuko's arc. In the OG show, he f*cking hates Zuko, and it's a beautiful tale of an abusive father and a child who wants nothing more than to be loved by said father. Here, Ozai genuinely wants what's "best" for Zuko, but misunderstands what "best" means - essentially undermining Zuko's backstory and motives.
I just, I hate this show, man. I only liked a handful of changes, including Lu Ten's funeral scene, but it was 8 full episodes of torture as a fan of ~20 years.

I hate the show but actually really liked the 41st division scene, However you just made a point that I hadn’t even considered before. There’s definitely no way the original Ozai would have ever given Zuko the 41st. He would’ve gone forward with the original plan and sacrificed them like the uncaring evil bastard that he is.

Ok ngl, there is a reason why they gave Yue have spirit powers and its because cuz it is kind of a trade off for showcasing a little detail of her still having the moon spirit energy. Remember the OG where everything was dark and the waterbenders bending was gone. In the OG version, Iroh notices that Yue still has the moon spirit cuz of blue eyes (Which the other waterbenders eyes were blue but gone grays thxs to the moon being gone) and tells her that she can save the Ying fish. For the Netflix version, while i agree that Yue changing into a fox spirit was unnecessary n weird as hell when she said that she uses it to spy on folks dreams, still she can also waterbend. I don't think it was confirmed that Yue could waterbend in the OG so the Netflix version giving her waterbending was actually a good change imo cuz it showcase that she has the moon spirit power even when the moon is gone. She showcases her waterbending by freezing Sokka's legs once she was about to sacrifice herself to save the moon spirit. Not the biggest deal but I kinda appreciate that trade off change and I wish the rest of the episodes made better changes that either adds or at least is a good trade off that makes sense for the character n world of ALTA.

It figures. Live action adaptations already have a mostly bad reputation with only a handful of good exceptions (One Piece, Sonic the Hedgehog, Detective Pikachu), but then they had to go and brag about how they basically tore apart 80% of what made the show good in the first place. I can't believe these people genuinely ignored the original creators advice, wrote this schlock instead, and said, "This is excellent! Everyone's gonna love it!" Or who knows? Maybe didn't think that at all and just didn't care about making a good show. I'm willing to bet the latter.

Hey Sam! I’m SO glad to see your review for this bc your reaction to the trailer was my favorite out of all the reactions I’ve seen 😂 I’m a fellow OG fan too and this show has also always been my favorite show of all time. I watched all the weekly episodes air on Nickelodeon (and dealt with all the hiatuses too 💀), all the avatar chibi shorts & avatar extras, and back in 2008, I remember I even found the leaked episodes online of Book 3 before they even aired it on TV (during that hiatus btwn “Day of Black Sun Part 2” and “The Western Air Temple”) bc I just LOVED this show so much and I couldn’t get enough of it. I also watched the weekly episodes of when Korra aired on TV.
That being said, I’m actually one of the few fans who really enjoyed this live action. To answer your question at 14:53-14:58, I’ll say that this NATLA is definitely not an improvement from the original. The original will always be #1. I agree with most of the criticisms too that some of the writing & acting is just cringey or doesn’t make sense with pacing. Either that, or the execution was just off or something.
I think the reason I enjoyed this live action (as many enjoyers are saying too), is bc I took this NATLA adaption as its own thing without comparing it too much to the original. Don’t get me wrong, us fans have EVERY RIGHT to compare it to the cartoon. I know it’s natural to do that, but seeing how they only had 8 episodes to fit in all the important stuff from Book 1, I just knew that comparison would be the thief of joy. Going into this live action, I trusted my knowledge of the cartoon and just sat back to see how Netflix unfolded the story. That way, I understood all the “references” that happened in the live action without thinking too hard about how it’s exactly supposed to be in the cartoon. I find it sad that a loooooot of OG ATLA fans didn’t even watch the whole Netflix series and give it a fair chance. They couldn’t even watch past ep 1 bc they nitpicked it to death with how it NEEDED to be exactly like the cartoon (even the smallest details that were only catered to kids back in 2005 and wouldn’t look good in a 2024 live action). It’s sad bc there are a lot of rlly good scenes/dialogue that are both added & pulled straight out of the show, but ppl won’t give it a chance without just immediately joining the internet hate train. A lot of the source material was pretty accurate too (though the story flow could’ve been done better on some parts).
I think NATLA’s problem with the writing & pacing is due to the number of episodes they were allotted, and also bc there are some things from the cartoon that wouldn’t look good in a live action, so they had to omit it but then it just made the pacing off. This show is greenlit to get a season 2 & 3, so I’m rlly excited to see what they’ll do with it. If they have maybe 10-12 episodes for each Season 2 & 3, then I think the pacing would improve a lot. A recent article by polygon.com gave me hope bc it had words from Albert Kim (NATLA showrunner) saying that since Book 2 is where things pick up pace in the cartoon, every episode/story counts now, so Season 2 might have to be “more by the book” compared to Season 1 where some stories were so self-contained & can be omitted/condensed like “The Fortuneteller”, “Bato of the Water Tribe”, etc.
I enjoyed Book 1 even tho it’s not the best adaption, and I’d like to think Netflix is reading all the criticisms thrown at them so that they can improve the show, esp when Toph comes in.
Anyways, sorry for my long comment LOL (it’s not meant to be a hate comment 🙏🏻 I just haven’t found many other passionate youtuber ATLA fans who also loved this show from long ago). I love all your reactions & commentary on ATLA and I hope you’ll post reactions when Seasons 2 & 3 come out!!

I personally really didn't like them using leaves from the vine this soon. I absolutely understand why they thought of using it because of its tie to Lu Ten. But I had no attachment to this version of Iroh. His character felt really flat to me and the moment that was so profound in the OG show, felt unearned in this one. By 4 words alone you can make almost an entire generation of people tier up who have watched to OG show. To me, Roku in this version felt more like cartoon Iroh than the Iroh in the live action

  • @shaneware7356
    @shaneware7356 3 месяца назад +1

I personally think the best way to remake this show into a live action is to take about 70-80% of the original and cut down the toony but keep the goofy, instead of condensing the story expand it! What people want isn't just the grand and spectacular moments, they want to spend more time with the characters. I would propose make the seasons 2 parts, for example book 1 part 1 Avoidance (Because Aang is trying to avoid his responsibilities of being the Avatar and try to continue life like he did before he was frozen), end with the winter solstice as a mid-season Finale. Then Book 1 part 2 Water, where Aang is working on learning water as he makes his way to the North Pole to find a master

If they were going to have Bumi be somewhat understandably mad with Aang it should have been executed better. They shouldn't have had Aang recognize it as Bumi so quickly, as it did lower the stakes from Aang for the audience (especially since Katara and Sokka as hostages are missing) as though he's in any danger after the guard saying as though he wasn't the lucky one after Iroh was being taken.
What they should have done is keep the additional tests, essentially they would be the ones for Bumi to make sure that it's Aang and not just any other air nomad that somehow managed to miraculously survived and upon the initial set of tests Bumi should have had a smile that it was old friend in realization that he is alive and wasn't killed along with the rest of the air nomads, however after some time to process it his mind could have had for his expression turn to that of anger (a display of ranging emotions in few seconds happiness -> grief-> disappointment-> anger) that after all this time his "friend" has the gall NOW to finally shows himself and that is when he conducts the final test for their fight especially for when Aang has make the choice to save the earth king as he doesn't yet know it's Bumi and he would still want to save him as this would also demonstrate the audience that Aang cares even about those he doesn't know and going into how his culture views all life as sacred even to those that would commit suicide without any care for their own well-being to get the audience to like his positive attributes along with it being a characterization defining moment. The other reason for why the animated show did the identity timing right was that it was to lessen Bumi's brutal lesson on Aang upon realizing it was his friend, so again some of Bumi's bitterness would make sense, but to also show despite it all he went about in his own caring way about his old friend in leaving one final lesson to him.

    • @VongolaXZax
      @VongolaXZax 5 месяцев назад

Yeah, I loved the beginning of the series, but I believe the writing is focused on "show and tell" instead of "show and don't tell".
While I did not like the direction they took with bumi, I agree with your take, on how it could have been executed better.
I feel like the dialogue (while it has its ups and downs) is explaining far too much to the viewer, what's going on, within the plot.
That and adding side stories, within the main plot, feels very clunky at times, Sai, his father and Jet all at once felt underuse imo, they look like characters that were just there, to move the story forward.
The live action versions lacked depth.
Jet's betrayal did not feel as big, like in the original, Katara's confrontation with him was flat.
I personally feel like the first season was rushing to get to, Point A and Point B, instead of slowly taking it's time, for the viewer to get to know the characters, which is something that I am hoping, will not be the direction in season 2.
I want the gangs moments as a family to be impactful in this version, speeding up the story, to get to the end, removes any kind of character development whatsoever.
The cast is great, but the writers/directors need to take their time.

One thing that broke everything is the order of the reveals. The cartoon was just good storytelling, everything was shown at the exact right time. They revealed Azula and Ozai in season 1, which was a terrible decision. They complained they didn't have time for all the episodes plots but they added probably 2 hours of content that was never in season 1.

One Piece teaches us one thing, the original creator has to be there to babysit the adaptation. Decisions went through him and the people that did the adaptation frequently talk about having to convince him before they made a change, which probably is why the original spirit remains intact in that adaptation but clearly is lacking in ATLA or Cowboy Bebop where the creators were treated like afterthoughts.

It's pretty ironic that when the fog of lost souls was first introduced in Korra it was coupled with the fanservice of finding out exactly what happened to Zhao, and here they reference the fog of lost souls but also take Zhao out of it and just give his demise the edgy treatment.

One of the reasons why One Piece Live Action worked well is that not only were there changes to the original material approved by the creator himself Eiichiro Oda, but those changes don't ruin the beloved characters that we follow during their journey (looking at you Katara).

Hollywood is so lazy and creatively bankrupt now, they don't even know how to craft characters. Every character doesn't really have flaws, they're already great, they just don't know it yet. So what passes for a character's journey is just them suddenly being better.

Its confirmed that S2 n S3 will happen which ngl, im hella worried about especially since I heard how Netflix usual strategy for live adaptations is give out 8 episodes or less to save budget. Netflix needs to change this strategy or at least get a better writer that studies the OG ALTA writing, especially since Avatar Book 2 n 3 got alot of important moments that absolutely cannot be rushed. I don't necessarily think the team needs to bring the 2 og ALTA writers back cuz they usual like to deviate from their previous works (Which explains Korra) and even if the 2 creators came back, the team still have to work with Netflix's mid strategy of working with 8 episodes and miss mash episodes together. I get that live adaptations can't adapt everything cuz budget n it won't hit the same as the OG, but the new writing should at least be entertaining like the OG. Despite some flaws One Piece Live Action has, still the writing manages to capture Oda's writing very well even with Netflix's limitations. Ya its mostly thxs to Oda overseeing the work but still it is amazing on how the team still manages to make changes n still follow the source material so well despite having 8 episodes n not enough budget to adapt ever ridiculous character from S1. Even if the writers of Netflix Avatar can't bring back the 2 og creators and get more episodes for S2 n S3, still I hope they find the right flow of changes that only adds to the ALTA world, characters being more expression n not feeling like a cardboard version of themselves (Cough Katara cough), and overall just pray they learn from the OG writing of S2 n S3 and apply it for this adaptation.

Blows my mind the mistreatment of the show, and how they literally babied us adults and fans of the series so much by trying tomake kt "more mature" and "like game of thrones", showing us the genocide of the air nomads...when it wasn't necessary to actually show, the firebenders didn't seem overtly powerful with the comet as they were in the OG series, and not seeing it has a way bigger impact, we knew what happened without seeing it through proper storytelling, also, WHERE R THE MARTIAL ARTS BASED BENDING MOVES, to me, there fighting, but all bending styles looks kinda similar, and that really bothers me. 😔
Now we get to see how they butcher seasons 2 & 3...Toph, her being blind and also the best earth bender in the world, her sense of humor and sarcasm making fun of her own blindness, Fire Lord Ozai and his storyline, Azula's insanity and how devious and scary she can be at only 14, heck, the blood bending storyline, and if they even show the depth of how strong it can be, the fact that Aang didn't bend a lick of water in the first season, the spirit world having season's 2 &3 spirits all in one episode, Aang feeling significantly weaker and not as able as a " master" Airbender, when everyone around him seems to be doing more, Bumi being so...un-bumi like...I'm scared for how bad it'll get, how is Aang supposed to learn both Water and Earth bending in one season...should be interesting...💯😔

What's so sad about this is that Book 1 had si much potential to be better, even in the original show. They somehow took more time to make a worse story while butchering everything that made the original show so beloved.
They might turn it around in the next season, but just like Katara in this version I don't have much hope.

Aang flies period only ONE way without his glider in the cartoon. In the Avatar State. Never any other way, he MUST have his glider to fly. Period.
Letting him fly, and airbending IS just flying there isn't a real distinction, breaks countless things. His airbending is either as powerful as it can be by DEFAULT, or he can just fly inexplicably.
The bending in this show is terrible. The special effects are pretty good, but the bending itself sucks. The martial arts aspect is basically gone so they can bank entirely on special effects. It's awful.
This show is garbage. It's spectacle above character. This problem has ruined many live action shows. The dialogue is obviously utter trash too, it's no wonder Michael and Bryan dipped so quickly.

The adaptation itself its not the BEST it in most of its writing but half the time it wasn't the worst cause the fight scenes looked good and the costuming, the casting Amazing BUT My critic with Aang is that I love the actor but his character's personality feels so restricted i get things are serious like cmon let aang be a kid! and i wanna bring up the opening sequence with him "Flying" he wasn't he was just air bending through the air some argue that it defeats the purpose of having a glider While for me it doesn't cause reason why is that the glider that an air nomad uses helps the user to control the wind currents around them thanks to the wings that pops out from the staff and what not so i didnt had an issue with that scene so i wouldn't be surprised if airbenders are capable of doing that like in the original aang dose those goofy air jumps when he gets excited
but my issue with aang not waterbending Kills the WHOLE purpose of book 1 like all he dose when it comes to fighting is only airbending which by now he ALREADY KNOWS!!! i thought after gyatso's demise aang would be hesitant to learn water bending at first but that develops later on but nope and by the time we get to the northern water tribe and aang becomes koi-zilla he's able to water bend??? the visuals was cool but i would've felt it much more if it was executed properly.

Yes, I get what you mean, I feel like it was decided to let Katara's waterbending to be the focus rather than Aang and Katara learning together, it would had added to the character development and friendship they have.
I don't know if they're going to keep the romance between them, since the cave of two lovers was explored without Aang, that's what started the spark.
Adding it in season 2 may be hard, because it can feel like as if it came out of nowhere, without it being properly developed in season 1.
I'm hoping everything will not continue in this direction, ATLA was never a race to get to Point A to Point B.
Mixing storylines from the other episodes, to move the story forward, just to get to the main plot sucks.

My problem with the casting of Ozai’s angels is that they look WAY TOO YOUNG. I know that they’re supposed to be young in the original show, but I honestly would’ve had no problem with them pulling a Euphoria on this shit and casting people around 16-20s because that’s what they looked like in the cartoon. It’s really hard to take Azula and Mai seriously at all when they still have their baby fat and pinchable cheeks. Also Mai and Zuko are supposed to be together, but considering he looks way older than her, I’m sure no one wants to seem them get together.
They just look like toddlers trying to play teenagers to be honest.

i thought this was gonna be great, because the one piece live action was great (and thats even harder to adapt). but uuuh no i didnt like this at all. i feel like for example kataras actor just didnt have a chance with this writing, how the fuck are you supposed to act well when your character says "im sorry" as a reply to her friend telling her all his friends and his whole culture is DEAD. original katara would have AT LEAST say something like "oh aang, im so sorry" like SOMETHING that makes it possible to emote in some kind of way (hello, was there no director there????).
also yes things have to be changed, but the original introduction is FAMOUSLY a PERFECT introduction to our pov character, katara, and her brother. it immediately gives you everything you need to know, and apparently the showrunners know that cause they did do that scene (just a bit worse), but LATER. whY. how is some random, context-less earthbending action-death scene a better introduction. in general, i feel like they didnt want the viewer to wonder about anything for even a SECOND. everything must be immediately explained (or 2 or 3 times), the "big bad" has to be shown immediately, nothing can be left a mystery. it was so boring and without anything to hook a viewer, i stopped watching in the middle of episode 1 😭😭 to say nothing about the weird monologues every character has for some reason....

In the original he was a lot more funny than the Netflix version. And they did rush a lot of the story. I agree with Sam. They rushed Katara. • @VongolaXZax
      @VongolaXZax 5 месяцев назад

Lol, that would be mess up, if they did that to her.
I feel like with the way the live action version is setting up Katara's arc, it would have made more sense to make her a prodigy, instead of going by the fast learner thing, because the way she progresses in waterbending so fast, makes it feel like as if she has always had an innate/naturally gifted ability, rather than seeing her struggles with the cartoon version.
I definitely agree on Sokka too, the actor is doing his best at times, but the writing made Sokka come off as unlikable and unfunny when he's on screen.
Sokka does grow up and becomes serious, but early Sokka was more on the comic relief side, without any flanderization of his character.
I get making him a bit more serious early, but that any removes growth, from him becoming a capable leader.
Live action Sokka is having an identity crisis, who is he?

While i haven't finished The live action yet i have to say im glad they got rid of The creators of the OG show(Let me explain, please bear with me)
And The reason why I'm saying this is because if it wasn't for that stupid decision Netflix made of firing the creators we wouldn't have a lot of the projects we are seeing from the creators of The show right now.
We have 20 Years of planned content in this univese such as the 2025 atla movie with adult gaang (the screenshot they provided for the movie looks phenomenal)
We have the kyoshi avatar movie announced, we have the next avatar show after Korra, meaning an earthbending avatar is next.
And with 20 years planned they can do an earthbending then firebending and then another airbending Avatar.
And it could become full circle ending the whole atla universe with a descendent from aang.
The future is bright ahead for the atla universe and i couldn't be more excited.
Now the live action, I appreciate the serious tone they gave to it , there's some changes that i don't necessarily agree with.
I need to finish it but at the very least it looks like they tried and if anything this live action is making people watch the original show And that is good. now we have 2 versions to watch , the og and live action one.
