This is gold. I feel like I've seen a good handful of popping commentary (including another one you've done, JRock), but this one really approaches the subject with a humble, realistic wisdom. We are in an interestingly pivotal era in street dancing. The original styles of the OGs are just far enough away-and the predominance of RUclips videos with half-baked styles are just widespread enough - that the dancing world runs the risk of watered down styles. Remember, remember: "styles upon styles."
I wish I was still into funk styles but I haven't danced in years and there was never a scene here where I'm at in Texas and Dallas is way too far to travel there frequently. This video inspires me to get back in it and JRock has always been an inspiration since I started.
Wow. I was doing some research on popping before starting to learn it and this has definetly helped me a LOT. Thanks for the video and much respect to JRock. That should be every teachers approach to a dance, no matter which.
This is just simply amazing. I wish I could take an actual class from you, you have just, a great outlook on everything. I've found myself lost in popping. You explain things in such a great way that I just, need to learn. How you explained freestyling and solo-ing is just perfect. I have never taken a class. And now I've seen what I've missed out on from trying to teach myself. Even though I haven't taken a class, this small insight has opened my eyes and I thank you so much for that.
Very humble and well informed interview! Not enough top level Poppers are opening up and sharing this kind of information with their worldwide community! Inspiring interview iv learnt alot!
I don’t see any vids of popping to house and techno at all.. the technical 4x4 format is a test to all freestyle dancers,, it’s the funnest and deepest as well.. where’s all the House and old Hip Hop Heads!!
this is how I think about dancing, I have a deck of cards that have all the styles written on them and I shuffle and flip a new one out once I feel i've sufficiently practiced one so I balance them all equally, then I freestyle the styles practiced and combine them. Great video man, I can't wait til I'm in LA next so I can take a class from you. Your definitely my favorite popper and teacher.
Your words are too true, homie! Out in Tucson, Arizona there are so many kids who say "I'm a popper" and all they do is wave, glide, and tut with the occasional head/chest iso and have no idea what I mean by "funk". It is such a depressing thought, but it's great to hear someone say it straight. Respect!
Very interesting insight particularly with the judging aspects and yes i totally agree that foundational styles they are very important to popping and dancing generally speaking.
I've never been more inspired by anyone in my entire life! I've been so stuck when it comes to dancing! I realize now it's because haven't learned my foundations. Thanks JRock! I'm going to be a new dancer entirely because of this interview.
Great video for sure & so true on learning each style on its own instead of just moves. Seems like so many only learn moves & when you watch them dance you can tell this & then they look just like the next person instead of using it to create there own from it. Unlike the ones who took the time to learn the style itself as a whole. When I started dancing & learning I was taught each style I have learned as a whole & was also taught & did the research on the history of each style where it came from who brought it out & also what that dancer or dancer brought to the Culture. Along with what the importance of that is. It help you understand the styles better & if you are a dancer I feel you should take the time to research & understand what these styles are about if you yourself are using them yourself. It makes you feel more one with the Dance & the music & how that allows you to then let the music create your dance allowing your own unique style to be created. Thanks JRock for this video I hope more dancers will watch this & begin to start taking the time to learn each of these & the feel of them as you said from the ones who specialize in these styles as well as the history of where they come from & what they have Brought to this Culture.
Thanks for sealing the mothership connection, popping since 89 from South Gate Cali and still popping I’m 37 years now and still going at it.Popping4life.
the wisdom spoken in this video is unparalleled by any other...much respect...i wish i lived in cali to take your classes...i feel like the reason us "new generation" dancers are not learning all the foundations of each style first is because many people aren't teaching like that whether it be through youtube video tutorials or in workshops...hopefully you see this cuz as a dancer at Penn State with nobody to teach me besides myself, it'll be nice to have some tutorials on foundation.thanks!
Yo JROCK, i really apriciate this interview, i def think the same way altho i am a hiphop dancer. Really great mindset. keep doing what you do, you have my respect. Giovani "Dimension" The Kulture Kids / The Alchemists NL ( holland )
man, california new genz need to listen to this man. He knows what he is talking about. Please learn from him as he is an incredible dancer and instructor.
You're a huge inspiration JRock! Love your style! (or should I say styles :P) I'm a popper as well and I'm slowly developing. Have taken a few classes but plan to take more in the future! Thanks for this vid, I really liked listening to your philosophy on dance.
good job jrock! good to see you passing the knowledge down! That's what hip hop should be...not only keeping the dance alive...but the history too! Hope all is well for you!
I'm so serious I want to learn from you. I'm very inspired but have no one to guide me through my journey. I live in philly and desperately need a tutor or even a partner to get down with. Thanks for the break down i only hope to get with you one day! Keep it up JRock
IF THE MUSIC "TELLS YOU" man...there's soooo much in that one phrase, he could go on forever with just that. Love the way he emphasizes that it's nt about moves" it's about really knowing the specifics of a given style in and f itself, and then combining to make "your own" I look at it like the old school Gung Fu movies. You learn tiger style completely, then you learn Eagle claw, and THEN you can combine them effortlessly flowing in and out f each.
I found out about The Drop just before I left and never got the chance to check it out. I used to session with my homies Addison and Joey in a cheerleading gym on wednesday nights. I miss it a lot.
@JRockABMCrew Thanks a ton for spilling your knowledge! Started a Popping club here at UCSD called Poptikz. Wanna bring Popping to UCSD. Popping and it's related styles. Its foundations. Its feel. Its culture. Appreciate it a ton. Good reminder that I'm always a student. If you are ever in SD, hit me up.
Awesome! I'm in Nebraska and want to start learning these styles. All I have really is youtube. Do you recommend anything along the lines of the working on things on my own?
@Jrockabmcrew - this was absolutely inspirational. I need some help - I'm all the way in the UK, so I'm not too sure where to learn these styles from. Also, how do you know when you have basics down before you start mixing it up to create your own 'style'? I notice people rarely do a single style anymore, instead mixing techniques and feelings up. Sorry I'm quite new to this Peace!
Very interesting interview yes go to the sources n Learn the history! My Point exactly Peace Get it from the elders or the best students of the elders!
Hey Jrock I'm from germany and I'm gonna travel to Los Angeles on the 28th of march for 2 weeks Could you please tell me where and when you are teaching? and where else i could take classes where the original styles are thought ?
WE YOUNG PEOPLE SIMPLY NEED MORE TEACHERS LIKE YOU
It's not an interview, it's a lesson lol

He talked about the "coca-cola" generation of popping, in other words, this "dubstep" generation of popping that only does animation and tutting.
thank youuuu! there's no foundation anyone

@@billyb9067 never thought about it but probably be sick to pop to Orlando Break Beats by DjRobE. I will try it out. Then maybe some DJ Icey too.

JROCJ learned from Skeeter?? What a privilege. Skeeter was IMO the most versatile dancer in the EB's.

Where do you teach? I need your classes advice and guidence. Stay blessed your very talented and dedicated to your craft.
Jason Stroman vimeo
Do you teach in LA still? I live in OC and am looking for a place to begin learning.
Dallas maybe, definitely not here in Austin from what I know. It's all bboying at UT :o
Dallas has the strongest popping community in Texas, if not Dallas then El Paso. I rarely hear things about Austin.
Hey Jrock
I'm from germany and I'm gonna travel to Los Angeles on the 28th of march for 2 weeks
Could you please tell me where and when you are teaching? and where else i could take classes where the original styles are thought ?
