Please keep up the great instructional videos! I found you by searching for exercises for sore shoulders from shooting a compound bow. I was a textbook example in your video. I am 64 years old. The soreness has been hurting my shooting for some time. I have been doing physical therapy exercises for about a week and getting better already. Since I found your video I have changed my shot process and it is helping my accuracy and wellbeing a lot - after just one day. I was pulling straight back parallel with my chest as you said don't do, and my shoulders were killing me. Can't even sleep on my side. Now with the proper back tension, I do not feel the pain when I shoot. The back tension was never explained as clearly as in your videos. Thank you! Thank you!
I attended this seminar and decided to rebuild my shot after I heard Tom speak. I ended up purchasing Solid Archery Mechanics a short time later, and it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done to improve my shot. I imagine it’s maybe not for everyone, but of everyone who gives it a shot I doubt there are very few who wouldn’t benefit from it. I highly recommend it. Well worth the money.
Great explanation of back tension. Been working on it for a couple of years after, for reasons stated by Tom, a shoulder injury forced me to improve my form and that really does put it clearly and succinctly. Thanks a lot Tom.
I watched Tom's seminar today in response to a new vintage bow gentleman's request for any you tubers instructions.shot recurve since 1990. But at hunt camp this year shooting got way off.watched seminar and within 15 minutes I was back on target.back tension tip put the joy back in shooting..I should pay him for getting me back in the game! Will never forget that tip!

Great video man. Heres what I have found about colapsing when comming through the clicker... i corrected this by use of a shot trainer. The shot trainer will amplify the collapse. Work with the shot trainer untill you can finish the shot strong. Your brain will make the proper adjustments so that you correct the collapse.
When I 1st started...my nephew taught me this exact way to draw. Though I wasn't using a traditional bow. My 1st bow was an early 70's offset wheel Ben Pearson..50lb draw, set for a 29" draw (I still have it). This lesson will Definitely save your shoulder, and increase your accuracy. I currently now have a Hoyt compound, and 2 recurves 40 & 50 lbs., plus the Pearson offset.
Tom appears to describe a lot of of what was written in the book 'Zen in the art of Archery by Eugen Herrigal' where Tom describes the point of automatic release. This video brought lot of context home, from formal lessons, online tutorial as well as range time each week for past four months. for most of the past month, have been shooting pretty much 8 ring and inner rings, even hitting 3 10x's on 60cm target 20 yards using Olympic recurve on a single round before my conscious gremlin took over and snaffed things up. this helps tremendously. excellent video. here in the UK, seem to be steered into Olympic.. :-( but thanks for great video on back tension, explanation of the muscles and even exercises to rewire the brain!
Very informative presentation. I’ve been battling TP for 15 years and I think this can help. I am definitely going to try the clicker. What bands is he using for the release practice.
I could never get anywhere thinking about JUST the back tension! Actually when I concentrate on back tension, I get WORSE! Cause then you'll pull to anchor and concentrate on your back but then your hand won't release! lol...Theres no trigger...With a clicker, it might be much easier but I'm a barebow guy...
This is great but I am still hitting the crap out of my face. Mostly my nose. No matter how straight I keep my head. I think I am still coming away from my face with the release, so hopefully that's the problem.

I like what you are saying. Create a system and repeat it every time you shoot.

Thumbshooter. Yes use a very similar approach. Big changes are the draw is longer, and there is a higher arc to the draw instead of the flat pull.

Make sure you can handle the draw weight! Technology has allowed us to create energy much easier.
